Oh You Pretty Things

I have very straight, difficult hair to cut and i know what i want, so i found Oh You Pretty Things and there was YOKE!
She knows how to cut straight hair ;-). She told me that she had travelled all over the world with her sister, so she has a lot of experience in different hairstyles/​types, this was great to hear and for me also I will never find a better hairdresser here in Amsterdam !

I loved the haircut and highlights I got from Jemma. I’m normally apoplectic when I try to explain what I want from a hair stylist, but Jemma was understanding and talked me through my incoherent half-​baked ideas of what I envisioned. I was impressed she got even my super fine hair to have some shape and body and volume with a short bob. No butch lesbian haircut for me, no sir! I’m so glad she could help me out of my new mom ‘mom hair’ phase. I’ll definitely be back!

I am very pleased with the color and cuts I’ve had here. I generally go to Yoke who can do both.

I got my hair bleached and toned by Karen, the colour specialist. For reference, I have very dark, almost black, hair that is bleached to a very light beige blonde. After my horrible breakage/​bleaching experience at Rob Peetom last time, I was in search of a new colourist and found Karen through
, which highly recommended her. So far I am quite happy.
Karen has been colouring hair for so many years, and she specializes in this so she is really knowledgeable about what colour looks good on you, how to protect your hair after colouring, and of course how to colour your hair. Her techniques were very good, and she’s very thorough and careful with sectioning hair and putting bleach on without overlapping the previously bleached hair. I didn’t get any breakage from the bleaching, which is awesome! Since it was my first time seeing her, she didn’t know my hair too well and didn’t leave the bleach/​toner on long enough, so unfortunately the colour wasn’t 100% even. But she was able to book me another appointment (quite last minute) in which she put another toner on the roots to fix the brassiness. Now it looks a lot better! And she didn’t even charge me for the second toner. How awesome, accommodating, and professional!!! Sadly, my current colour is a bit darker than what I would have liked, but I feel confident that Karen can fix this. I feel that she really listens to me and what I want, and I look forward to seeing her again. She’s not the cheapest colourist (I paid 100 EUR), but she’s very talented and caring. If she can colour my hair, she can do anybody’s hair.

Things I liked about this place —
So I’m very very particular about my hair and I liked the fact that Gerben took time to hear me out and listen to what I wanted and how I wanted it.
I wanted an appointment with Heath or Clint but they were both booked but I wanted a haircut the very same day so they accomodated me — very nice and friendly.
I liked my haircut — it was exactly what I wanted.
Ambience — the place is eclectic with cheetah print couch to some crazy photos and curtains. While I was getting shampooed, there was a BDSM kind of projector image playing. Well, I didnt mind it at all — I think it adds character to the place and shows the creative spirit of the salon
Price — Very reasonable
Things I wasnt so crazy about —
Cleanliness — Í m a little bit of a cleanliness freak so this may not be a problem for everybody but i felt that the place, shampooing area etc. could ve done with a little more cleaning. And cleaning my face, neck etc. after my cut wasnt done all that well. I had hair sticking all over me.
I’m not sure if I will go here again as I am exploring and trying out new salons in Amsterdam but once done, I may go back to this one.

Best. Haircut. Ever. After two months, my hair still looks good.
This salon came highly recommended to me by several friends, and I have to say it did not disappoint. The atmosphere is hip, yet cozy and unintimidating. The stylists genuinely enjoy their work and it shows. I’ve had cuts by both Heath and Clint, and I’ve been very pleased with the results. I’ve yet to have color services here, but I’ve heard wonderful things about Karen, the color expert.
Very reasonable prices.
