Our last night in Amsterdam, we ventured out for a nice dinner and this place smelled great from the street. The restaurant is huge but was mostly empty. I wish we had read the other reviews before we went here. Entrée prices were around 20 € each, however it ended up being a very small bowl of chicken and everything that usually comes with it is extra. Rice, naan, even water! When we went to pay the bill we noted we were charged for things we didn’t even order but that the waiter had just put on the table anyways. All in all, we left paying 87 € for 2 people that wouldn’t have been more than 40 € anywhere else. The food itself was okay but not anything special.

Fantastic food. Host was incredibly friendly and helpful. Every dish he recommended was delicious. Absolutely loved this place. In my top two favorite Indian restaurants ever.

Ridiculously overpriced and had extra things added to our bill, including charging my card way more than the total price. Thieves in the guise of restaurant owners. No wonder the place was completely empty at peak/dinner time.

We were really disappointed with this place. After reading the other Unilocal reviews, we thought it would be something that it really was not. The food was good(not incredible but good), but we felt the whole time that we were being judged by the staff. We weren’t that hungry so we wanted split an app and one course. We were bullied into ordering more, so we got some naan. When the bill came, we discovered that they had brought three extra things to our table that we didn’t ask for — an extra serving of bread and rice, and yogurt sauce. They even over charged us by 2 euro for my terrible mixed drink! Our bill came out to 65 euro for next to nothing. I do not recommend.

What a delightful surprise! Who knew we were in for the best Indian food of our lives during our weekend trip to Amsterdam. We let our waiter recommend the dishes for both us and the kids and he delivered in spades. We loved every dish, and will come back each time we pass through Amsterdam. Outstanding. Also, make sure to try the naga(a.k.a. «ghost chill») sauce with your main dishes. A unique and very spicy experience.

Best Indian restaurant in Amsterdam. There is just no competition. Maurya is our favorite sit-down restaurant in the city for the last couple years. Situated close to my favorite movie theater in Amsterdam, Maurya serves up the tastiest cuisine I have had in my time in this city. The interior is spacious, tastefully designed and decorated, quiet, and great for groups. Service has always been great, too. Raj, the owner is a friendly charming person who takes immense pride in the quality of his restaurant’s food. He’s often walking around explaining the menu to customers and is also friendly to the idea of deviating from the menu according to your taste. I have also been lucky to sample dishes before they went public! While I have tried almost every vegetarian dish, my favorite remains the samosa chaat which is served along with spicy chick peas, with a 3 sauce combination. I can make these my meal! The different types of naans are awesome, and you should definitely try the methi paratha sometime. The ambience is serene and there’s always soft classical Indian music in the background. The only thing I want added to the menu is more Indian snack fare. Oh, I am hungry again!

If you are craving for authentic Indian food in Amsterdam then this is the place i would recommend to go. I went to this restaurant first time two years back with my husband and we had such a delicious Indian food first time in Amsterdam. Since then we have been to this place more than 10 times. As we are Indian thats is why we always crave for good quality Indian food but always got disappointed before we tried Maurya Indian lounge. Food was super delicious, freshly cooked and spices were freshly made as well. Lets talk about interior, they have really comfy chairs and couches also very well decorated walls. There is always classical Indian music playing in the background, which makes the dinner more romantic and classy. My favorite dish is Malai Kofta which is not in the menu but owner always try to arrange that for me as we never get Malai Kofta at any other Indian restaurant in Amsterdam. They have the best veggie samosa in the the town. And having good quality tandoor and the chef from taj group is the best combination. You can get the best quality of naan, methi parantha, onion kulcha and garlic naan here. Staff is friendly and service is great. At the end never forget to try«paneer tikka» for starter.

This restaurant is really tucked away on a small side street near Leidseplein. The front is unassuming but once you climb up the stairs, you find a lovely Indian restaurant. They serve extremely authentic food with organic ingredients and spices imported from India. Their chef is also a master with mixing spices and flavors. Food: 4⁄5 The food is the real deal and the heat is also quite potent as well. We had a starter of spicy chicken and it definitely packed some heat. This is a great place for seekers of spicy food. For those of us with weaker spice tolerance, their samosas and curries were delicious. My favorites were the lentil curry, cashmere chicken and fish curry. The chicken wasn’t overcooked and the fish was perfectly tender and flavorful. This is also a great place for vegetarians! Of course, mango lassi and naan are a must with any Indian meal. Ambiance: 4⁄5 Though the outside is very underwhelming, it certainly feels like a hidden gem once you get inside. The décor is very nicely done with a lounge feel. There is beautiful up-lighting and Indian décor elements around. It has a well-stocked bar near the entrance as well. Service: 5⁄5 The staff were amazingly friendly and helpful. They offered explanations for each dish and also the spicy level. The owner also came around with extra hot sauce for those who wanted more«kick» in their food. It is obvious that the people here really want to share this delicious food with everyone.

If you are looking for a nice and good restaurant in the area around Leidseplein, it might be difficult to find a good spot. But if you climb the stairs in the ‘Korte Leidsedwarsstraat’ and go to Maurya, you will be very satisfied. This is great authentic Indian food in a very cozy interior. The staff here is wonderful and helpful and will serve you fantastic food. The spacious restaurant has beautiful tables and chairs and comfortable couches along the walls. All the food is great quality and all the meat is juicy and delicious. You will not get dry chicken here. I love the spinach to go with the curry’s. The sauce with mint is delicious with meat or samosas, and either is the mango chutney. If you are not familiar with Indian food this place is great because the staff will be happy to inform you about the dishes and also tell you which ones are spicy. Don’t forget to try a Mango Lassi(mango yoghurt drink) with your food. This is also very helpful when you eat anything very spicy ;)

Looking for something more than your average wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am Indian food? Looking for a place to celebrate with your follow brown colleagues after the end of a long IT project? Or perhaps you are just looking to stuff your Bollywood bellywood with food packed with hundreds upon huuundreds of spices!!! Then maybe it’s time for you and your samosa-hungry belly to check out Maurya like I did! But Dennis M., there are TONS of Indian places in the area. What makes THIS place so special!!! Goede vraagje!!! Let me list them for you. 1. Chef — Yes. This place has a chef. Not just someone’s wife’s cousin’s brother’s servant who just moved here from India and is cooking to make a living while searching for IT jobs. No, this place has a legit chef who takes the hundreds of spices and carefully mixes them together for each dish. Buh-bye pre-mixed masala boxes and hello fresh spices 2. Imported Ingredients — I have a hard time finding normal things like baking soda here in Amsterdam so I can image the same might be true for spices. So what does the owner do? Import it all from India! And the importing craziness doesn’t just stop with spices, even things like fish are imported from special areas of India and brought to your plate for your eating pleasure! 3. Freshly made — I guess this is more of a disclaimer for people who do not like to wait for a meal. Since most things are not pre-made, you need to wait as they knead the dough for your naan, mix the spices for your tikka masala and carefully wrap your veggie samosa that I KNOW you are eagerly awating! 4. Lamb Rogan Josh — WOW! How’s that again? … Ehem… WAAAUUWWW! This was my favorite dish and if the sauce wasn’t already awesome, the lamb was melting in my mouth. I mean… how often do you basically drink lamb meat??? The owner is super nice and will tell you AAAAALLLLLLLL about the food, his concept, etc. If you don’t see something on the menu and they have the ingredients, they’ll make it for you. REALLY yummy samosas(which if you can’t make well, you might as well close your shop now!) and everything else overall was fantastic! I’m going to again say, because I don’t want to see complaints on future reviews, that you will have to wait longer than normal and the prices will be higher because of the reasons I listed above and the fact that everything is organic. We all have our time/money thresholds, so as long as you know this, you’ll be fine. I will for sure come back here to sit on their nice maharaja chairs with shimmer shammer indian pillows to enjoy some tandoorimasalapoorisamosanaankheerlassi followed by India chai!

I regret that I mistakenly chose Maurya for our one Indian meal in Amsterdam. Three of us are Indian food lovers; my husband and I cook Indian food at home but don’t have restaurant options available to us. We were with a rarely seen friend for a special meal. It was quite disappointing. The restaurant has policies that they cite in order to sell food that is not ordered. For example we learned the hard way that if you order papadum, it includes spicy pickle and raita. This is not disclosed on the menu. The dishes are delivered to your table and you are expected to pay separate charges for each of the accompaniments(neither of which we would order). We like our food spicy, and ordered dishes that typically have heat, such as vindaloo, but found that every entrée was rather uniformly sweetly flavored. It was as though a fair amount of sugar or honey had been added to a store bought masala sauce. The food was uninspired at best. The service was fine, but the attitude when we questioned them was high-and-mighty, without any customer orientation. When we paid by credit card, we were informed that they would add a 2 euro fee. With the very high prices for less than ordinary food, this is an outright insult. Certainly, credit card processing is already factored into the prices in a tourist-area restaurant in Amsterdam, as a matter of practice! Don’t bother to try Maurya. Make sure to try the Indian restaurant Mayur, which was highly recommended, and is nearby. Unfortunately, I led my friends to the wrong restaurant, in every way.

Indian restaurant with no Indians :) The food is ok, the ambiance is modern Indian, not the usual place but it is definitely too heavy an way over priced. t is at the second floor and they have a person catching you at the entrance other way you would never dare to get in the small door and go up the steep stairs. The menu is the usual Indian style, very long. There is a TV broadcasting Indians tunes Chairs are massive… and uncomfortable. Well. yes. a tourist trap.

Customer service is good, the food was decent and the place is really nice. I’m giving this place 3-stars vs 4 because the owner took our order and added stuff to it that we didn’t order and charged us for it. We ended up with extra rice(one was enough for tow), some vegetable stir-fry(didn’t touch), and the yogurt stuff(which neither of us ate since we are both dairy-free eaters). I didn’t think anything of it since I figured they came with our meals until I got the bill. I don’t know if he treated us this way cuz we were tourist or what but either way, it shouldn’t have happened. The two other waiters(one male and one female) were WONDERFUL. Prices are kinda high, especially for Indian food but I was on vaca soooo.

It’s not often that I am led astray by the review of others, but this time, I don’t understand all the five-star reviews for this place. The interior is nice and the food was good, but it was nothing spectacular, particularly for the price. And on that note, let’s talk about the price. First things first, we looked up the menu on the Internet. Since we both are veg, we looked at the vegetarian ala carte menu, which listed each entry at between 7,50 and 8,50 euros. This is more expensive than most Indian food veg dishes in Berlin, but we attributed it to being in touristy Amsterdam, so not a big deal. However, when we arrived at the restaurant, the menu had these prices crossed off and instead new prices listed next to them, listing them at 12,75 euros or more. We thought this was strange, but since the prices scratched out were«side» prices and these ones were«main» prices, we assumed that meant they included the things that normal«main» dishes include, like rice and bread. More on that later. On a side note, I also found it somewhat interesting(but mostly tacky) when looking on the main entrée pages for meat dishes that they used to come with rice, salad, and maybe something else, but those things were also crossed out(or rather, covered in white stickers) and only salad accompanies the entrees. Next, the bartender asked us what we’d like to drink. We both ordered Ginger Ale — two tiny bottles for 2,50 euros each, but what can you do? I also requested a glass of tap water with my soda, and was told they don’t serve tap water. Now, nothing pisses me off more than a place that denies free water — there is a law against this in California, and this should be a crime elsewhere too. I would have taken my glass to the bathroom and filled it up with water there, but luckily I had my Nalgene on me, so oh well. When we decided to order, someone who I think was the owner took our order. I got the Amritsari Cholley and my boyfriend got Mushroom Bhaji. We were then asked what kind of rice we wanted, and what kind of naan, our server suggesting particular flavours or kinds that he assumed«went best» with our particular meals. Well, in our case, the ones that«went best» also coincidentally happened to be the most expensive. Yes, nowhere on the menu or during the ordering process does anyone mention that the cost of naan and rice are additional — and rice is always considered an included staple at every other place I’ve been to. You only find out if you ask, or if you are surprised by your bill at the end. The food came, and it was good, but just good. I enjoyed my meal, and I’m thankful that I was asked what kind of spicy-ness I like, and given a meal that was enjoyably spicy but not too much, but I wasn’t overwhelmed by everything. The rice, which was the«two serving» size, was about the same size as one portion elsewhere. And it certainly wasn’t enough to accompany both our meals — my Indian food experience is that there is rice leftover but not the entrée. In this case, there was a lot of my entrée I ate with no rice, as it was gone already. And this isn’t even a particularly large plate — just a standard size serving dish. Also, the naan had butter on it — I’m pretty sure we ordered«plain» — but even if we did somehow agree to butter naan, a responsible waiter should notice that when I make certain to ask that there are no animal products(dairy) in my meal, that I probably don’t want it on my bread either. In the end, our bill came, and it was 42,50 euros for two people. Mind you, with 12,75 each entry, plus the sodas, we would be lead to expect a bill of around 30 euros, which is still about 10 euros more than a meal with entrée, rice, bread and drink at any Indian restaurant we’re accustomed to going to. But no, this rice that was suggested also cost about 4,50 euros EACH. That was what really got me! Not the refusal to give us water. Not the inaccurate and so obviously changed prices. Not the misleading menu that dupes you into spending more. No, it was the fact that they can try to get off charging that much for a few scoops of relatively average rice. No way. To be fair, the service was attentive, but the restaurant was also surprisingly empty for 7 p.m. on a Saturday night, with only four tables filled. Maybe this is the reason why. All in all, I’m not against a restaurant in central Amsterdam charging more for things — that’s the law of tourist areas. But the fact that it wasn’t a face-value type of experience pissed me off. There’s nothing worse than places that are blatantly trying to take advantage of customers, and I feel that’s exactly what happened here.

This place is just amazing looking, and we had the most delicious meal! First of all, the décor really is spectacular. Not only are the hand carved chairs beautiful, but they are extremely comfy! The details in the restaurant decoration are all just so lovely and really set the stage for a nice dinner out. Interior aside, the food. It was great! The owner, Raj, came over to take our order, and helped guide us through the menu, asking what we like to eat, do we like spicy food, and recommending various rices and breads to go with what we ordered. and when he went off to the kitchen we weren’t sure what we would get but I must say, it was all really delicious! We had a lamb dish, a spicy chicken dish and a spinach dish, with 2 kinds of rice, naan, and raita. It was all so good. We really ate like kings, much better than any other Indian restaurant in Amsterdam that I have been to. After we had a chat with Raj who explained that they make everything fresh. No frozen like a lot of other places do! You really could taste a difference, and I look forward to going back.

By far the best Indian food dining experience you’ll ever find compared to places in the US or India. You wouldn’t think this place is very big from an outside view, but as soon as you walk in you’ll be impressed by their attention to detail in their furniture, the owner explained that it was all imported directly from India, full out with glass countertop tables, with a lot of ornate wooden designs. The chairs themselves make you feel like you’re sitting in a king’s throne. The food was delicious, we tried a shrimp appetizer and a few meat & veggie samosas to munch on before our meal. We ordered a variety of breads from naan and phorotta to chapathi, coupled with a few meat dishes like chili chicken and butter chicken(and a few other dishes I can’t remember). All in all, PHENOMENAL dining experience. The wait staff was attentive and constantly checking on us, and the food is just simply perfect. Definitely on the pricier side, but worth every Euro. Would definitely visit this restaurant again next time I visit Amsterdam.
