Go here and order the rijsttafel, or rice table, and don’t forget to make a reservation first. Don’t try to decide what to get, just let them bring you out the never ending plates of delicious food. I am pretty sure the waitress told me what everything was, but I can’t even remember. All I know is that it was delicious and in large amounts. As someone who isn’t a huge meat eater, I appreciated all of the vegetable choices that were included, and the rice was delicious. There was also one particular chicken dish with a spicy sweat peanut sauce that was to die for! Service was excellent, and the space was large and comfortable. I would definitely go back here next time I am in Amsterdam.

Last week, I booked a table at Kantjil to introduce my guest to the delicacies of the Indonesian cuisine. Unfortunately, it was a disappointment. We took rijsttafel Kantjil, a mix of fish and meat, as the waitress explained, at € 55 for two people. We were already surprised that the food came out so quickly, it took maybe 6 – 7 minutes. On the table was roasted pork, fish skewers, satay, vegetables in coconut milk, shrimps in banana leaf, some krupuk and a spicy hard boiled egg. At first sight, the dishes didn’t look very appealing, as if the food had just been thrown into the small, white bowls. But presentation doesn’t say much about the taste, so ahead we went. Sadly, almost all of the dishes tasted bland, they really lacked the outspoken Indonesian flavours I had expected. The dishes were lukewarm to say the most. The roasted pork was dry and chewy, and I really hope the accompanying sauce wasn’t purely ketchup. The vegetables were boiled to a mush, the krupuk seem to have come straight out of the bag into the bowl and the shrimps were so salty we couldn’t finish them. The fish skewers were very nice, also the boiled egg was tasty, but then, it is a boiled egg. Now, I understand that it’s impossible to make all the dishes in a rijsttafel to order, so some — or most — need to be prepared beforehand. But if you’re charging € 55, it would be nice to see some effort, both in presentation and in flavour. Maybe Kantjil is the kind of place where they do one certain dish really well. I’d stay away from the rijsttafels and order a single dish instead.

Pleasantly surprised by the food, I expected another round of faux bland ethnic food but Wow, was I surprised. The dishes were Not Great, but… Not bad, Not bad at all. I would definitely go back, and certainly recommend this place for great tasting Indonesian food. The service was also excellent. Good job people!

This is one of the nicest restaurants I’ve been to in Amsterdam. I had the Nasi Goreng Kantjil, it was delicious and filling, although one of the meats was too spicy for me. I came with a group of friends and we barely got in because it was busy. When I take my family here, I will definitely get a reservation. 10⁄10

Had a great lunch with visiting family who wanted to try an Indonesian rice table. We got the expanded version, and glad we did because the extra couple of dishes were delicious! Everything was very flavorful and we got a good variety.

Wow! Just wow! Never having Indonesian food, we looked around for a good place to eat at. This one is pretty popular, and my boyfriend had came here awhile ago with his older brother on another trip to Amsterdam. They have a takeout counter as well as a restaurant. So many options! The restaurant was pretty full when we arrived, and they let me charge my phone as well. The menu is full of exotic foods with exciting names; we started with the Kantjil Sedap appetizer mix; it’s for two people and you get a variety of appetizer dishes. We also picked the Rijsttafel Matjan which was 32.50 per person, you get a big combination of 14 dishes! Each dish was made wonderfully and had a kick to it, the flavors were on point, the fish was excellent, the vegetables crispy and fresh, the meat succulent and filling. It was excellent, and we could hardly finish it all– we took home leftovers! I have to try more Indonesian food to compare, but the first time was the charm!

Make a reservation! Great hospitality and service at Kantjil. All the dishes were great. For 6 people we ordered 4 different set menus and still had food left. I honestly can’t tell you the name of each dish cause it was all in indonesian but… the ones that stood out the most was the chicken leg and vegetables in coconut milk. We also tried the homemade ice tea which you can add alcohol too. Seems like they added rum but either way it tasted great. They add a leak to each drink which i didn’t exactly understand but i guess it adds to the aesthetics. Great place we found in Amsterdam!

We had the rijsttafel for dinner and opted for the most expensive one. It was pretty good and I liked the variety but it didn’t really wow me. Service was fine and it was good that we had a reservation. I don’t really have a desire to go back but I suppose I will if friends want to go.

I will say that this was the best Indonesian restaurant I’ve been to out the U.S. And the customer service was exceptional. Very good along with the food. Amazing food and the home made ice tea! Heavenly, I wish we had similar in the states but different variation. So good. I definitely will return

What a great place we chose to have our last meal while in Amsterdam! I suggest making a reservation because this place gets packed. We called ahead because we had 12 people, and they sat us at a great big table. The options were endless especially for me being a vegetarian. The plates are easily shareable which makes the cost that much cheaper. The atmosphere was unique and the service was great, especially when it came to splitting checks(which we explained at the beginning). Whenever I hear of someone traveling to Amsterdam I make sure to tell them to check this spot out for some delicious Indonesian food! The location is great too, there’s numerous shops and bakeries all around.

Just okay. Indonesian food is everywhere in Amsterdam, so don’t think that this place is a specialty in and of itself. It’s absolutely cavernous on the inside and can seat hundreds of people at once, but food takes a long time to come out. Everything here was just okay– few things actually were deliciously balanced. Sauces were often overly sweet or meats weren’t cooked right. We got the 27 Euros/pp meal that includes a few vegetable dishes, rice, prawn crackers, and various meat skewers. Ordered their famous iced tea, and the waitress said it didn’t have sugar in it. Duuuude, I want to live on whatever Planet Diabetes she’s on because it was SWEET. If sugar free things tasted that sweet where she’s from, sign meeeee up! Food was fine but not worth the price tag. Simple, cheap cuts of meat and cheap produce sold in a nicely lit space equals ungodly markup.

I had lunch here recently and sat at one of the tables outside. I was seated for perhaps 10– 15 minutes and was eyed by at least two waitresses who I guess couldn’t make up their mind if I was going to stay for lunch or just sitting there. So I gave them the eye that denotes«I’m here to eat are you going to come over?» Once someone finally made a decision that I was there to eat they gave me a place setting and menus to look at though I’d already decided from the menus posted on the wall outside. I had the fried dumplings, the bami surprise and a large draft beer. The dumplings weren’t what I expected though they weren’t bad. The bami surprise was okay for fried noodles with chicken and vegetables and the beer was okay. It’s definitely a tourist place right on Spuistraat with bunches of tourists ambling by in a busy area. The bill came to 20,20 euro. It was higher than I expected for lunch but at least it wan’t a bad lunch or experience. I’m not sure I’d do dinner here though the picture menu had some nice pictures of their entrees but no descriptions for some reason.

This little spot is pretty good for lunch. Having never experienced a proper rijstafel in my time here in Amsterdam, I understand that my review might not be the best to reflect all those details that everyone is unhappy about but for lunch? A tasty meal for around € 10.50? It really isn’t bad at all! On the back of the giant menu, they have on offer something they call the Mangkok– as delightful as the name is, with the Mangkok, you get a choice of a base: rice, fried rice, fried rice noodles or fried egg noodles(or without if you’re going all paleo.), a vegetarian side: beans, sprouts, bok choy or carrots in a tasty mélange, with a protein: chicken two ways, beef or a special of the week which is topped off with relish, half an egg and a giant prawn cracker. Basically, this bowl is so epic and hearty, I dare you to walk away still hungry! Whilst service here is a little slow and distracted(hello, it’s Amsterdam!!!), and it clearly won’t be the best meal you’ll have ever had– but for € 10.50, you get a lot of bang for your buck! Another bonus for these guys, they serve you water. FORFREE! Take that, other Asian-esque places! Pow pow!

I was hoping, with all the positive recommendations and Indonesian influence in the area, that I would be able to satiate my craving for an authentic Indonesian meal here. However, I found that Kantijl falls into the trap that many Indonesian/Malaysian restaurants abroad do to disguise their inauthentic cuisine: adding tiny dried onions/shallots to every dish. I found the dishes appropriately spicy, but lacking in flavor(except, of course, for this onion business). My favorite part of the meal was the lemongrass iced tea. The dining room was crowded, the staff friendly, the service slow.

I’m sitting here, incredibly annoyed — we arrived at 8:45 for a 9pm reservation and were seated on time. Menus didn’t arrive until we prompted the waiter. The appetizer took 10 minutes too long to arrive, but the main rice table course arrived more than 50 minutes(!) after we were served the appetizer round. The table next to us, which had been seated after our appetizers appeared, received their entrees before we did. Amazing. The appetizer was heated unevenly(some things were freshly fried but one of four items tasted like it had been sitting there for a few minutes longer than everything else — it was room temp) but tasted pretty good. The rice table itself was as good as it’s ever been — no complaints there. Our requests for more water took ages and the waitress told us they were out of to-go boxes. Awesome. I suspect our experience tonight was a fluke because I’ve been here multiple times and had good experiences. Still, this was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve had in NL — this should be unacceptable for a restaurant of this reputation and price level. 4 star food with occasional 0 star service.

After walking around the city during the early morning we decided to stop here for lunch since Amsterdam is known for good Indonesian food and this place had a good rating on Unilocal. Service was average, no complaints here. My rating is based on the food. We ordered their lunch special combination at 16 euros a person. The veggie selection that came out was multiple variations of green beans and a plate of lettuce with some sauce on it(lacked creativity). One of the salad dishes was hot and the others served cold. We had three meat dishes that came out. Chicken satay seemed like the were reheated and not fresh off the grill. The same can be said with the beef dish and chicken stew that was served. The beef dish could be cooked a little longer since it was tough to chew and I had to naw on it quite bit to get it down. Even the rice was cold. Overall it felt like everything we ordered was previously cooked, and while I can understand certain things, not everything should have been served that way. The dinner menu looks a lot better and I’m thinking most of the good ratings are based on dinner. I wouldn’t come here for lunch again and given my lunch experience, it’s not likely I’d come back for dinner.

A friend and I tried the«High Wine» and it was great! We loved the variety given on the tower of goodness. From fresh rolls, to Indonesian-style bitterballen, it was all tasty and worth a try! Did I mention it comes with wine?! The restaurant itself has a very nice and classy feel without feeling stuffy. And it’s on Spuistraat! How much more central can you get? This was awesome and I can’t wait to take my husband!

Indonesian food seems to be all over Amsterdam, as Indonesia used to be a Dutch colony, so I made sure to try one of the recommended spots! Kantjil & de Tijger has an extensive menu that allows you to sample different Indonesian dishes, and several tour guides suggest ordering the rice courses for two or more people. You essentially get rice and several small dishes, but I found that it didn’t make economical sense to order this course instead of the combination plates because they come with almost the same dishes. Prices aside, all of the dishes were very flavorful, reminiscent of Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese cuisines. I loved the sauce on the pork and chicken skewers, and the meat was also cooked perfectly. Some of the other sauces on the meat dishes were a little heavy, but overall each had a unique taste. I really appreciated that vegetable dishes were included, but some of them were a little too basic to justify paying so much. One of the highlights was the egg and steamed vegetables that were drizzled with an amazing spicy peanut sauce. My idea of the food may be a little biased based on the misstep in ordering the rice course, but overall it was great to be able to get authentic Asian flavors in Europe!

Right next to the #5 tram stop, this is a convenient place to sample Dutch Indonesian cuisine — the result of a legacy of Dutch colonization of Indonesia. Usually in my reviews in Europe, I qualify that it’s a tourist perspective. This isn’t the case this time. My wife is from Indonesia, so she knows her Indonesian cuisine. Being married to her and traveling to the country frequently(and eating both restaurant and home cooking there), I’ve developed a taste for it. Kantjil & de Tijger is ok, but if you are looking for real Indonesian cuisine, there are better options in Amsterdam. One item they offer that is friendly for the traveler wanting to sample is a Rijstaffel Sampler(the Dutch name for Rice Table, adopted in Indonesia itself, which is a feast of various Indonesian delicacies many of which revolve around rice). Normal Rijstaffel is a huge, multi-diner feast; the sampler is small portions of each in a single entrée that is consumable by a single person. Bottom line is that it seems like more of a Dutch/Indonesian fusion, with spices toned down and altered to suit tastes in the Netherlands. The staff is quite friendly. In fact, the young, nordic looking Dutch man who served us, upon discovering my wife spoke Indonesian, insisted in speaking to her soley in Indonesian even as she responded in English. He had spent some time in Jakarta. She reports he was quite fluent. Frankly, it was pretty charming.
