I had high expectations for this place. I know it used to be on Warmoesstraat and recently moved to the Nieuwmarkt location, but this is the first I’ve tried it. Maybe I had high expectations because I’m American and it’s supposed to be like an American diner. But, I was disappointed.
I’ll start with the good points: Location is great and there is plenty of outdoor seating. Server was ready (before we were) to take our order very quickly. The décor is fun and does look like an old diner.
My friend and I ordered a chocolate milkshake. Of course, we’re in the Netherlands and I don’t expect the perfect milkshake, but I’m not even sure there was ice cream in my chocolate shake! It was just really thick milk that was really cold. And there was chocolate pieces… I’ve never had chocolate piece in a milkshake ever. I didn’t hate it, but it’s a little surprising as the pieces came up through the straw. The flavor was on point, but the texture was not. But my husband got a strawberry milkshake which was the right texture, so I’m not sure what happened there.
Husband and friend got a burger which they said was a small step above a McDonald’s burger (meaning, not so great), but the topping were good. I got fries that were supposed to have cheddar cheese on them. I know the Dutch have something against cheddar cheese, though I haven’t quite figure out what it is, but what was on my fries was not cheddar. It was a cheese product that you get on crappy nachos in the states. And our friend is in the dairy business, so he knows a thing or two about that stuff.
Side note: The old music videos were cool, but the songs we were listening to were not what the video was which was awkward… and I’m not quite sure why «Let it Go» was playing in a diner (Which is supposed to be 50’s/60’s style and music)
I like the idea and I REALLY wanted it to work, but it just didn’t. And now we are still on the search for a good milkshake in Amsterdam because some things you just crave from home… even if you have delicious gelato available in many places as an alternative.
