Café Thuys

Dropped in here on a rainy night after being turned off by the lackluster welcome at Bar Spek across the street. I had a glass of wine and a warm starter plate, which were both up to usual Dutch bar standards. Atmosphere is cozy and bustling, staff are friendly, attentive, and happy to speak English. Overall a very positive experience.

What do you do when you are accidentally an hour early for an interview? Find a bar, of course! Well, I wasn’t really on the hunt for booze, but I did need somewhere close to the interview location and Café Thuys fit the bill. I really liked the space. It was cozy. It was casual and had a nice vibe that I appreciated. I had a tea and an order of bitterballen (because that’s always a good idea pre-​interview). Nothing fancy, but it hit the spot. The service was friendly and fast. They earned an extra star because their music was really good.

Great location, right off of Line 12 and right beside the canal. Lovely terrace seating to enjoy the awesome summer cool breeze off the canal. Food is freshly prepared and tasty. Mostly bar food but very well prepared

I go here quite a lot. Especially on Sunday afternoons. They have a nice terrace where you can catch some lovely rays of sunshine.
A few weeks ago we went to Thuys on a Friday night. Pretty crowded, but good vibes and easy tunes to wiggle around.
Today I dropped by for dinner. Decent menu of pretty standard Dutch bar dishes. I had a burger which lacked some seasoning. Fries were salty and the small salad on the side was tasteless. This all might sound not that good, but you know…, Thuys is not a place you go to have a next level meal. When a friend from out of town visits and I want to show them some classic Amsterdam West hospitality with an ok meal this is where I go.
Three star food and a five star atmosphere, makes a nice four star rating.

Wow! We got off the tram looking for somewhere to satisfy our hunger and walked into a brown café where the bartender told us the kitchen was closed… And we asked for a recommendation to which she said «no»… We walked across the street to the Café Thuys. Amazing! Food. Fun. Friendly. Fast. Each a 5 star!
Service and hospitality was excellent! We ordered the special. a REAL burger with fries and a beer — the best in a long time and we are from Alberta!

After reading a fellow Unilocaler’s review of Café Thuys I was committed to trying it out. Thanks to another fellow Unilocaler who ran a Meet up activity there my opportunity presented itself. Good food, good drinks, good service. Yes, yes I had the Kalfsburger and a couple of La Choufes and I was plenty pleased. Personal note, this was my first burger since coming to Amsterdam. The activity that was happening was also a lot of fun. The organizer of the event put together one tough pub quiz that only a few could master. Well done!
Back to the café. It’s a nice cozy kind of bar with some good selections of beer as well as a full bar. It’s situated on one of the canals and has a few tables outdoors so I imagine when things warm up it’d be a great place to chill. Inside the bar it has a nice cozy ambiance about it that invites you to hang for a spell which from the look of it, plenty do. The menu has some very interesting things on it from a burger, to fondue, to steak. Yumm. The staff was laid back but attentive. Check it out when you’re in the neighborhood or make a trek to it.

It’s possible to find delicious burgers in Amsterdam!
The only place I have had acceptable burgers in EUROPE was at Burger Bar in the center of Amsterdam. «But that’s all the way in the center» said my boyfriend. The center, is 10 minutes, by the way. We picked something close by, and ate at Café Thuys last night. I was blown away.
With typical Dutch décor and charm, the cozy corner café’s menu is listed on the wall in chalk. We each ordered their Kalfsburger and a few La Chouffes and were pleasantly surprised with our short wait time and attentive staff.
Then something else great happened: the burger. was. awesome. The meat was tender, and delicious. The pairing of tomato compote and thick slabs of bacon + cheese on a delicious bun really made the whole experience a dream come true for any fatty :) Add a side of fries, and roll me home.
Will definitely be back with a friend to share that massive burger. At € 11.50 for a huge, filling meal, sign me up any time.
