To escape the tourists in the North, head down De Pijp to Café Reuring for good modern Dutch food. This is proper no-fuss but comfy neighbourhood restaurant. More locals than tourists, friendly staff with a nice wine list. Afterwards(or before) you can walk across the road to their cocktail bar Paskamer. More at:

In a quiet backalley in the Pijp, you’ll find all the culinairy ‘Reuring’ you could ever wish for. The place has a simple, modern french cuisine inspired menu, friendly and attentive staff and a very decent wine list. The menu is preset(3 or 4 courses); the portions are very modest and thoughtfull, the taste explicit. Prices are — considering the level and quality — very reasonable(between € 30 — 40 for a menu). Nothing left but to quote Arnold: «I’ll be back».

Café Reuring was such a delightful find in my hood! There were 8 of us, which they kindly accommodated(our party unexpectedly doubled at the last minute) and they had 8 quite discerning people walk away totally happy and satisfied! That is despite the unique food restrictions for some people ranging from ‘nothing that swims’, ‘nothing that lives in a shell’, nothing that starts with ‘pine’ and ends with ‘apple’ and no ONIONS or GARLIC(gasp)! It is a chef’s menu so choice is more or less taken out of the equation but since what they serve you is all fantastic, choice is pretty unnecessary here. The only thing I’d change would be to do the wine pairings with each course. We had a glass of wine to start which was mediocre but took the server’s suggestion of the wine pairing with the main and it was wonderful. The food is sophisticated, the ambiance is warm and unpretentious — it’s a pretty ideal combination in my mind. Can’t wait to go back!

What a surprise to discover this lovely restaurant! It doesn’t seem too fancy but the food is really good and well presented as one of the fanciest restaurants in town! Really good price vs quality, I had the 3 course menu for 33euros and it was delicious. The staff is really polite and friendly, they explain you in detail all the dishes and ingredients. Really a GEM!

Good place for a special occasion if you don’t want anything too stuffy. Excellent food though there weren’t any dishes that were very memorable though we really enjoyed our meals. Portion sizes were larger the I expected. Though the food came out very slowly. Nice cozy atmosphere.

Well kept secret just outside the city center. The both gentlemen who were running the business the evening I visited were true hosts and a proper chef who know how to cook. The chef serves the dishes himself if he has time and there is nothing wrong with his taste buds. Hands down one of the best lobster rissoto’s I ever had and only 17 euro(!!). Was it all good? It took 30 minutes before we started wondering were our entrees were. At that moment the chef was at our table with a complementary amuse because, according to his own saying, he ruined the rissoto. Great resolving although it took some time. Like I said: when the rissoto finally turned up, it was worthwhile the wait. Because of the true hospitality, excellent pricing and tasteful dinner, I give it five stars and can truly recommend it to anyone although I hate to put this one out there. Biggest risk is that when the masses discover it, there is no more fun in it for me :-)
