I love the food at Korey’s, but last time I tried to go it was closed with no explanation. This was around May 8th. I’ve driven past since then and it appears to be closed permanently. Sad day. I wish I could just have one more of those delicious honey biscuits.

WINNER, WINNER, CHICKENDINNER… Ok, sorry(I had to). Korey’s is a wonderful addition to the Ypsilanti food scene. I mean, this is some of the best chicken I have ever had in my ENTIRELIFE(and, believe me, I have had my fair share of fried chicken). This is the most moist, flavorful, juicy fried chicken(while still being perfectly crispy on the outside); it’s delicious! You can, like another reviewer wrote, see the cajun seasoning in every bite you take! Oh, and those honey biscuits??? TODIEFOR… heaven sent… oooey gooey goodness! The biscuits alone are enough of a reason to visit! AND, even after all of that, the food is totally reasonably prices(like, cheap!)!!! So, really, you are WINNING! ;)

As much as I wanted to give this place a 4 or 5 stars, I can only mustard 3 stars. In one week, I ended up going here twice… located at the old BW’s building and it only occupies the 1⁄3 of the space and the rest of the building area is blocked off… they still have some of the original tables from the BW’s days… So I’ll go through each sides and main dishes I had and give you my take on it… Chicken — it’s your average fried chicken; wasn’t overly impressed nor disappointed, granted I had better friend chicken before… Chicken tenders — excellent tenders; juicy and tender. Fried Catfish — the fish was little on the bland side… even with the tartar… could have used more salt or seasoning on the fish… it seemed like the fish was dip in the batter and fried, had they seasoned the fish prior to dipping into the dip to fry, it would have helped with the flavor. Green — over cooked… as for taste, it was ok, I would not get this next time I go back. Mac & Cheese — nothing special… Fried Corn — steamed corn, dipped in a batter and deep fried… not bad… they use the batter as the cat fish. The corn itself was little bland, but with hot sauce, it was good. Boudin Bites — well, I did get this with one of my dish, but they gave me chicken bites :) Chicken Bites — had it twice on both visits, and it was excellent, crunchy outside and soft inside. Jambalaya — no go… dried and dried… would not get this again. Red Bean & Rice — it was okay… not sure if I’ll order this again. Cole Slaw — very good… not as good as KFC’s but it was good. Honey Biscuit — the winner — never had such a wonderful and delicious biscuit! This I can eat like candy! Overall, good place to go for southern chicken, I would recommend that you stay with the tenders, biscuits and cole slaw… this is a take out place more then dine-in; but they have three large tables and couple loose tables here and there… it was cold in there, so warm up… Service — first visit — good; second visit — even better! Food takes few minutes to get, so make sure you have some time…

oh i just figured out that this is in my neighborhood and i can walk here. that’s going to be trouble, because this is some really delicious food. great fried chicken — crispy, moist, and flavorful, with just the right amount of pepper spice. i got the red beans and rice and it’s exactly what it should be. and the biscuits? everything they say is true. these are amazing biscuits. i’ll definitely be going back to try the fried corn.

Really disappointed with the food. The fried chicken was mediocre(at best) and would have been better if the pieces were decent sized and meaty, instead of just fried skin. The side dishes were just abysmal. We had the fried okra, jambalaya rice and some other friend thing that consisted of rice, sausage. I took one bit the threw it out. Was really hoping to give it better reviews, but won’t be returning here, sadly.

The best fried chicken place in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. I love their honey biscuit, fried corn and fried chicken. I am a big fan of fried chicken. But for most of the fried chickens I bought from the other place were either too dry or not tasty. But the fried chicken in Krispy Krunchy is tasty, juicy, and crispy ! And the chicken still taste good and juicy when it gets cold! So I rate it five stars.

The short version: — The fried chicken is excellent, great combination of flavor and crunchiness. — The honey-biscuits are delicious, very soft and sweet. — Fried corn-on-the-cob was excellent(according to my wife). — The mac-n-cheese is for plate decoration only. Bland with a fast-foody texture. — The mashed potatoes w/gravy was abysmal. We’ll definitely be going back for the chicken, biscuits, and corn, but we’re going to avoid the sides. Everyone in my family(four people) disliked the mac-n-cheese and the mashed potatoes. The details: My whole family enjoyed the chicken; the taste was great, not too spicy(and not too spicy for my kids), and the breading was cruncy with nice texture. It really seemed homemade instead of the KFC greasy-sliding-skin type feel. The biscuits were very good; very sweet and soft. They seemed a little smaller than, for example, a KFC biscuit, but just a little bit. My wife had the fried corn; I asked if it was good, she gave me a side-glance with a strong approving nod. Two thumbs up for the corn. The mac-n-cheese was cheesy, but not in a homemade kinda way, more in a jar-of-cheese-sauce kinda way. It also wasn’t very flavorful, so I’d suggest avoiding it, unless you really, really need mac-n-cheese for some reason. The mashed potatoes were disconcerting. After my first spoonful, the taste I had was familiar, but I didn’t want to believe it. After each of my family members mentioned how they disliked them, I said«Me too… weird taste.» And my wife said, «Yeah, sorta like dish detergent.» EXACTLY! Dish detergent! The«insert_curse_word» mashed potatoes tasted like Palmolive. We called them back, the woman my wife spoke with was nice enough to taste her batch of mashed potatoes… and said they tasted like they hadn’t been seasoned by the cook(who she said wasn’t the regular cook). She offered to replace them on our next visit, but we’ll be avoiding the sides going forward. 5 stars for the chicken, biscuits, and corn(and the customer service during the call back), minus 3 stars for our experience with the mac-n-cheese and the ridiculous mashed potatoes.

I ordered the 3 piece dark with a side of cole slaw. Everything was A+. I’m more of a burger and fries guy, so, take my review from that aspect. This place is on my way home from work, it was worth stopping in. I paid with an ATM card, and on the bill is a big line item for TIP. I hate when places do that, especially when the meal is fast food.

Korey’s is truly a hidden gem. Although most people might not think to stop in Ypsilanti, if you want great southern food and chicken, this is a must-stop hole in the wall(despite the location). What separates Korey’s from every other place is that their signature cajun seasoning runs throughout the entire chicken. You can see streaks of red, juicy, deliciousness through every bite. Even the large white breast pieces are flavorful to the bone. Korey’s pairs their chicken with unique and delicious sides, ranging from the honey butter biscuits to the fried corn, which could equally stand on its own. For fast food, this place is a must-try and some of the best fried chicken I have had in the country. I could never live walking distance to Koreys, because It’s just too diabete-licious.(Also, Mon-Wed is 10% off) Food(5⁄5) Service(4⁄5) Décor(2⁄5)

Came here because I saw it after eating brunch at Beezy’s and it had good reviews on Unilocal. It’s basically a fast food franchise that serves fried chicken, among other cajun food items. As for the chicken itself, I think I had too high expectations from Unilocal reviews. I ordered the 4pc dark meat meal. I was thoroughly unimpressed with my drum and thigh. The batter was crispy, yes, but the chicken was not spiced all that well, and definitely not flavored down to the bone as I had read in another review. I’d say the chicken is probably on the same level as that of Popeye’s. Maybe a step up from KFC. The honey biscuits were not over-hyped though. Sweet, glazed with honey, moist, even to the point of almost falling apart when you pick it up. Got an order of the fried okra, which was pretty good. Normally, I’m not a fan of Okra, but they slice it into a half inch piece, and batter it and fry it in a ball shape that is spiced well. As for the other sides, tried the Jambalaya but it was dry and not flavorful. The red beans and rice were reasonably tasty though. I ordered the catfish filet meal, which is 2 fairly large filets of catfish. They take 10 minutes or so to cook, so be prepared for a wait. It’s probably worth it though — the catfish is fried in a light batter and spiced well. Also got ¼ lb of fried shrimp(6 shrimp) which was very good. They are fairly large shrimp, not like popcorn shrimp you’d get at other places. They also have a light batter, and are seasoned nicely. Served with cocktail sauce if you so desire, and it’s very nice. My whole meal ended up being about 22 bucks.(4pc dark meat meal, 2 catfish filet meal, ¼ lb shrimp, side of jambalaya, side of fried okra) Overall, this is a solid fast food joint. Don’t have too high expectations of the chicken, and you should be fine.

I’m at ~3.5 stars, but rounding up for the chicken and service… The chicken, I prefer the tenders, is just amazing. Krispy, krunchy, and a hint of spice throughout — not a heavy Cajun spice, but just enough. This is among the best of the chains(i.e., Popeyes, Raising Cane’s), but I really like the local«flavor» of this joint. It’s a small hole-in-the-wall place, albeit new and tidy, and the staff is always super friendly and will go out of their way to make you leave smiling. The crack-rock biscuits are almost too good when hot out of the oven — if ya know what I mean. And it’s always worth waiting for… That said, I haven’t been too impressed with the other sides, but the fried corn on the cob is probably among the better ones. Haven’t tried shrimp yet. Not a fan of the KK dip(which is artificial crap and an extra charge). If you’re in the area, I’d definitely stop by for lunch or dinner. But don’t go too late… they’re only open until 9pm, and by then the strip club traffic will probably keep you away anyway.

Thanks Unilocal community. I would have never found this«gem» in Ypsilanti. This is good Louisiana style fried chicken. I’d like to see a spicier version, but it was a little spicy and very tasty. The red beans and rice with the honey biscuits were excellent. I thought my grandson was about to have a coronary episode when he came home and discovered and devoured the extra red beans and rice and the honey biscuits we purchased for the next day. He really the the chicken we had left over as well. You can never tell what he will like, but he is definitely a fan. I liked the potato wedges which we snacked on while driving home. It seemed a bit pricey, but everything was quite good. I’m going with 4 stars today, but I’ll be back…

About the KKK references: A cashier told me that they are a very small locally-owned franchise(«Krispy Krunchy»), and they tell owners to make the first name of their restaurant THEIR name. The bottom line is that the proof is in the pudding: THECHICKENISGOOD! THIS is the place for fried chicken. Forget KFC and even Popeye’s if you ask me(yes, I know that’s blasphemous in some circles). ;) If you’re not about to fry it yourself or get it fried at a friend’s house, consider Korey’s your place. Reviewer Liz W. hit the nail on the head about the chicken’s flavoring, so I won’t go into that. My Mom enjoyed the fried okra and catfish. I’ve only had the red beans & rice(B+) and the potato wedges(good, about a B+)…but find the chicken to be a HOMERUN. You can eat in if you want(seating available), but this is mostly a to-go place. Expect a line during lunchtime and dinner rush. Worth the wait.

I’m not a big fried chicken person, but if I’m going to go there then it’d better be fantastic – and this place ISFANTASTIC. The biscuits are to die for – no. seriously. amazing. The food(I really have to go back again and again so I can try everything) is outrageously good and the folks are nice. It’s a family-owned shop, so you get to support local family business, get good food, for a great price. Win-win-win!

I always liked the idea of Popeyes, spicy fried chicken and Louisiana style sides, oh yum. Problem is Popeye’s has tiny and too often not so tasty chicken and the sides are really nothing to write home about. The service is usually atrocious to boot. This is how I think a Louisiana style chicken place should taste. The chicken is fricking delicious and definitely the star of the show. Spiced throughout, not just the coating but down to the bone. Juicy and still crunchy, the chicken leaves your lips with a slight, very pleasant tingle. Wings and breasts are huge and not a bit dry thank goodness. Add to that some of the only biscuits that pass my husband’s exacting standards and we were sold. Honey butter biscuits that live up to the title, in Michigan, amazing. We also sampled a half pound of shrimp because we were curious and we don’t care a whit about heart health. You won’t either after dining here. The shrimp were quite nice indeed. Crispy but not just a pile of coating like some places, these were good sized crustaceans to begin with. Give them a whirl, you won’t be sorry. The sides were not as expected. James and I were most excited to try the jambalaya but found it dry and uninspired. The potato wedges were typical but still very tasty. The lovely lady running the joint gave us freebies too though that were a happy surprise. She gave us a large container of red beans and rice that I fell in love with. Totally droolworthy. The smaller container of green beans were quite liked by James but I’m less into little potato chunks in my beans personally(give me some pork though and I am all over it). The small container of mac and cheese was utterly forgettable but it was nice to know that fact for free. The service was super friendly. You can tell they are very hands on. Be prepared for a wait, they like to serve up hot fresh chicken. Be patient because it will be worth it. The restaurant was empty when I walked in but when I left it had a real crowd. The prices are pretty fair for what you get and a lot of the people seemed to be regulars. I would recommend takeout personally. They have two booths and about 5 – 6 high top tables though so eating in is entirely possible. Atmosphere is basic but they have two TVs in the small dining area for some odd reason. Given the small area you would think one would be plenty. If you are in the Ypsi area you should really try this.

What can I say, other than this place is AWESOME. The chicken is almost comically juicy and tender, the fried batter crispy and flavorful. The biscuits are also to die for. Luckily, those attributes are enough of a reason to come back; so far the other sides I’ve tried have been reminiscent of KFC ones, which isn’t to say inedible, but entirely ordinary when compared to the chicken itself. To be fair, I haven’t tried them all yet, nor have I tried the catfish or other menu items. Then again I don’t really need to be fair; this place gets 5-stars and will be returned to as often as my heart can handle. My only question for the owners is, did you notice the three K’s? Really? A little odd, but for a place like this, I suppose it just adds character, like my Mom used to tell me that walking to school did.

Nice clean place with good food. Looking around Ypsilanti, they need a lot more places like this one. Hopefully this place will be a success and help breathe a little life back into downtown.
