Weber City used to be the place you went for cheap beer. The walk in cooler was a haven of sales cheaper than the local grocery as well as bulk hot dogs and cheese curd. However, this last trip home found me supporting Tops, the local chain, 5:1 over Weber City. Why? Their prices beat WC hands down. Also? My out of state ID wasn’t hasseled at Tops. I understand that it is illegal to sell to minors and I am very glad they are ridgidly adhering to the law, but being rude about it is no way to treat your customers. I was forced to wait for 5 or more minutes at the counter(with a growing line of agitated customers behind me) while, who I was told later is the owner, asked someone to get the ID book out of her purse… in the car.(shouldn’t you keep that at the counter if it’s such a big deal?). I was then asked outright if my ID was fake. I am an almost 30 year old Alaska resident. Obviously I had forged my license to buy cigarettes… But my biggest pet peeve comes in their over the top signage about how they now accept credit cards. To that I first say, welcome to the times! Your sales will increase as most people use credit and impluse buys will go up! And then I read the fine print and see that they are charging the customer fees for using cards. This is actually illegal in many states and what do you know, NY is one of them, and against all credit processing rules. If one were to perhaps call Visa, Mastercard or any other provider and inform them of the situation, they would lose their ability to run credit. You cannot pass the fees along to the customer. Period. So with all that transpired in the 10 minutes I was there on my last visit to WNY I will never go back. And to hear that it is the owner herself that treats everyone so badly? Well, sweetheart, from one business owner to aother, that’s just bad business.
