Animal Emergency & Referral Center of York

Highway robbery. Those are the only words to describe this company. Our cat has had urinary blockages before and our normal vet usually gives him a catheter and we can bring him home the next morning.
I brought him to this place because it was a Sunday and our normal vet is closed. I sat for 3 hours just waiting for them to give me a quote on the cost for the catheter and pain meds.
After 3 hours they brought me a quote that was 4 times what our normal vet charges us for this treatment. Just the overnight stay was nearly $ 500.
I think they are taking advantage of people because they know they have the market cornered for emergency veterinary care and I personally find it disgusting.

My beloved dog, Cali, was in distress last week, and unfortunately had to be euthanized. I was treated with great compassion by every staff member … and would recommend this facility to anyone. I greatly appreciated the time they took and care they provided! Thank you all!

The folks here are quite frankly, the best. I have only had to take two animals there for emergency treatment and the vets and staff were excellent.
If you should have to euthanize a pet here, there is no better place. The room they put you in looks more like a living room than an exam room. They give you all the space and time you could possibly ask for to say goodbye to your furry family member. And once your animal has passed, the exit lets out directly onto the parking lot so you don’t have to pass through the waiting room filled with people during one of your worst days. It’s the absolute best way to handle the worst duty of a pet owner.

Vastly overpriced, and downright rude.
I appreciate that the services here should cost more than at my (beloved) Shiloh Vet, as they are an «emergency» service. However, when looking over the estimates, the tech is downright RUDE should one (gently) question any charge. This is *not* alright.
In addition, checking Google shows that there is regularly a 2.5 hour wait, and that was exactly the case this afternoon. That is too long for an elderly, stressed, ill dog.
The vet himself seemed kind, empathetic, and competent. Unfortunately, we only had precious few minutes with him. The rest of the staff, from front desk (who scoffed when I could not think of the word «lipoma», among other things) to techs, were unfriendly. A smile and some genuine concern would have gone such a long way!!!
Lastly, the place needs a deep cleaning.

I can’t say enough good things about this place! They saved my cat Charlie’s life! He was having terrible urinary tract issues, and after taking him to his regular vet several times, and another emergency vet, we found out about York Animal Emergency. We were told Dr. Rabuffo was the best for dealing with cat urinary issues and surgery. Our cat had a blockage, and Dr. Rabuffo performed a perineal urethrostomy on him. The care that we received was amazing. The staff treated him like a celebrity every time we brought him in for follow up appointments. They were also great with answering the ton of questions we had. I wish we could take our cats here for their regular check-​ups. I also think they are really reasonably priced… especially compared so some of the other emergency hospitals I’ve been to in the past. Thank you Dr. Rabuffo and staff!!!

I cant say enough good things about this office. The vets atr top notch & the surgeon Dr Robuffo is a mirricle worker., she saved my Charlie Boy! After months of misdiagnosis, she figured out what was wrong in 10 minutes. Dont hesitate to take your loved ones there…

I have had mixed results with this vet pratice. The first time I dealt with them, I had found two orphaned kittens who hadn’t eaten in four days and badly needed attention, but it was Labor Day and I had no idea what I was doing. I stopped by the office and a vet tech spoke with me. She came out to my car, assessed the kittens, said they were quite robust considering what had happened to them, offered to sell me formula at cost, and gave me some bottles and instructions on feeding and caring for them. They now live fat, happy lives with a cousin.
I have used this practice twice since then for emergency situations with orphaned kittens, all of whom pulled through and are now in happy forever homes. My biggest complaint is the cost — you pay about $ 70 just for walking in the door. I realize they have you over a barrel if your pet needs emergency care when other offices are closed, but this is a bit much. Not only do they charge a large fee just for walking in the door, the line-​item charges for procedures are greatly inflated, and they’ll even charge for the exam room.
They are also very, very slow — I’ve spent 3 to 4 hours in the office with sick, hungry, cold kittens, just waiting and waiting, when all the kittens needed was some quick fluids or fructose to revive them. If I ever have to go to them again, I’m going to ask if a vet tech can just give the kittens what they need so I can get home and get on with taking care of the kittens, rather than spending my entire night in the vet’s office.
I also think the vets are very high pressure at this office. Each time I’ve been there, I’ve made it clear from the get-​go that these were simply kittens I had found and wanted to give a chance and I could not spend thousands of dollars on unnecessary procedures. Nonetheless, the vets tried to push extreme treatments on me — chest x-​rays, full blood work, etc. I want to make it clear that I do not begrudge the fact that vets have to make a living and I’m willing to spend more than most people on vet bills, but I feel they try to push things on you that won’t really help the animal. They also seem to try to make you feel guilty if you don’t do everything they think you should do. If I’m going to go for weeks without sleep to bottle feed kittens, I don’t need additional stress on top of that. This vet practice seems to be following a very distrubing trend in the industry of using high pressure, emotionally manipulative tactics to get people in vulnerable situations to cough up thousands of dollars in vets bills. I expect that from car salesmen, not from medical professionals.
Nonetheless, if you face an emergency situtation with your furry friend, this is the only place in town you can turn if your regular vet’s office is closed. They are open ²⁴⁄₇ and on holidays. I believe the only holiday they aren’t open is Christmas. They will competently take care of your pet and get him/​her back on track — but be prepared to hand over a lot of money for it. Use this vet, but only if you really have to, and bring someone else with you who can help you be objective if you are emotionally vulnerable.

We recently required the services of Animal Emergency Center of York because it was a Sunday and our normal vet practice of FOUR doctors was not available. Our need was the most difficult for any pet owner not to mention our pet lived with us for fifteen and a half years. The staff was extremely kind and courteous to us. Even though it appeared to be fairly busy with people waiting in the waiting room they took us to the comfort room in short order. The staff assured us our decision was in the best interest of our pet which eased our pain. I would not hesitate to recommend them. As far as costs, when I spoke to them prior to our arrival the front desk staff stated this was an emergency clinic and the cost would be more that our normal vet. Just like in the case of going to the ER at a hospital over your family doctor, it is going to cost more. I have no complaint about their charges.

I have really only used this place for their low cost spaying and neutering. I just had my male cat neutered and got his rabies shots for $ 70. You first have to go to the York SPCA to take advantage of these reduced prices. The SPCA then gives you a voucher and you call here to set up your appointment. I had our female cat here a few years ago to get spayed as well.
When our female cat was done, some of her sutures started to come out and they took care of it for me. You have to make sure you get the cone for your animal, or else they will charge you for any follow up visits if something does happen. I personally would rather pay $ 5 for the cone as opposed to a regular visit to this place. A visit here normally runs about $ 75, and that does not include costs of any treatments.
The only thing I don’t like is the wait for spaying/​neutering. They give you an appointment time, but as they are an emergency clinic the emergencies are their first priority. My male cat was actually there for a day and a half before they finally got around to him. When I finally got a call, they asked me if anyone called to let me know he was ready to be picked up. By the tone of her voice, I could tell he had probably been ready for awhile. I also remember my female cat having to stay overnight as well. I guess the potential wait is offset by how cheap the spaying/​neutering is. Overall this is a great place to go if you do have a true pet emergency.

I had to take my beagle here at 2:30 am one morning. She had come down with severe symptoms of Lyme disease. They were completely professional and were waiting for us when we arrived. We were the only patient there at that time and received immediate treatment. The tech and Dr. O’Donnell explained the disease and treatment quite well. The initial cost for the center to see us was $ 75 compared to the other emergency clinic located in Mechanicsburg– they want $ 99 just to see the animal.
Having worked as a vet tech and clinical lab tech, I knew the actual costs of the tests they were running and the mark up was quite significant– however this is not uncommon in vet practices
Overall I was happy with the treatment my dog received and should I encounter another emergency with a small animal I would not hesitate to use this place again.

We needed to get our dog Willow spayed as she was just past 1 year and we are letting her out on a line in the yard now that it is spring and we take her to the Dog Park frequently. We stopped in at the SPCA on the trail and they referred us to the Animal Emergency and Referral Center of York. We did have to pay slightly more since she was 2 lbs over the 50 lb limit and she was in heat, but that is neither here nor there. We dropped her off and she was ready to be picked up in the evening, no overnight stay necessary.
They gave a small amount of medicine for her and we chose to get the Elizabethan cone so she wouldn’t be licking at her incision site. Willow recoved very quickly and was mellow for a couple of days, but her overall attitude is still the same, a high energy mixed pointer puppy! I would recommend the place since they know what they are doing and I was not waiting long at all. We were notified when she was ready and I was greeted in a friendly and polite manner. If I ever needed the service to spay or neuter and animal or if there were an emergency situation (I would hope not) I would not hesitate to go here.

If you ever need an emergency vet, and I hope you never do, this is the place to go. The doctors, techs and staff are amazing, kind, gentle, and happy to help you in your time of need. I never knew about this place until my dog started having seizures one night. I’ve had to use their services 3 times and am always impressed. I should mention their services aren’t cheap, but they are fully staffed 24/​7, I’ve walked in at 9pm at night and at 3:30am and they are there waiting to help. I can’t stay enough good things about them!
