I was headed home from Burlington/Graham. All company matters had been taken care of successfully. I had been awake almost twenty-four hours, so I was tired and a little hungry. The German Restaurant was on my way home, and only a fifteen minute detour. I was a little reluctant when I drove through Farmington, past the Drag Strip. I eventually saw a sign that said, «Mt. Airy — 32 miles» so I was really headed away from home. I arrived and I was the only diner. The same smiling, friendly, waitress as always was there. She really is a sweet person. Upbeat German music was playing softly in the background. I didn’t need to look at the menu. I ordered the Weiner schnitzel and the Pan Fried Potatoes.(I wish that I had ordered some of the homemade German sauerkraut as well.) This meal comes with a substantial free salad which includes lettuce, grated carrots, pickled beets, and pickled green beans. I still have no clue what the house dressing is, but it is tasty. Weiner Schnitzel. Tender. A light crunchy crust, with a slightly salty taste. Not greasy at all. Very good! Pan Fried Sliced Potatoes. Perfection. So brown and crispy that one is tempted to pick them up and eat them like potato chips. I cook these pretty well myself, but Hanni, the German lady owner, takes them to a whole other level. They are simply perfect with a slight sprinkling of salt. Zero greasiness. The oil tasted like peanut or sesame seed oil, so if you have allergies to peanuts, I would inquire about this.(Peanut oil has the highest burning temperature, so it is the perfect oil to fry potatoes and fish. It is also the most delicious.) German Chocolate Cake. In the refrigerator, and as of yet, uneaten. The waitress said that all cakes, in fact EVERYTHING, was homemade, so I have high expectations for this cake. German chocolate cake baked by a talented German lady chef? It just has to be fantastic. Santitation rating? 98.0% This place may be Teutonic Spartan, but it is also Teutonic CLEAN. I’m always impressed how unpretentious and squeaky clean everything is here, especially the bathrooms. For what it’s worth, I’ve never seen a cleaner men’s bathroom, anywhere. A lot of love and attention is put into the operation of this restaurant. Bill? The most amazing thing, aside from the surprising deliciousness of the food, is that the prices are extremely reasonable. I had a sizeable house salad, a large Weiner Schnitzel, half a plate of heavenly pan fries, a glass of sweet, crisp, Riesling, and a hunk of German chocolate cake for…$ 22. At the nearby German restaurant in Winston-Salem, this meal would have been $ 40, and it wouldn’t have been nearly as tasty. Tip? 25% Whenever I am in the area after 4 p.m., I always come here, and I’ve always been impressed. The German Restaurant is a hidden TREASURE. Support this restaurant. Trust your GPS and dine here, you won’t be sorry. Everything is Fantastisch! The only thing that stops this from being a five star restaurant is the lack of German beer. If The German Restaurant had Spaten German beer, there would be a brass plaque on one of the tables labeling it as mine. If this restaurant were located in Charlotte or Raleigh, there would be a two month wait for reservations. This is the best kept secret in North Carolina.

My wife and I took a drive in the country today to go visit the Amish store in Hamptonville(Shiloh General Store). I knew we would be getting back a bit late for supper – so looked-up a place to eat in the area. I found this GEM of a restaurant! I had the Wiener Schnitzel with red cabbage. The Schnitzel was breaded and cooked perfectly – and the cabbage was«to die for” – flavorful without being overbearing – and melt-in-your mouth texture. My wife had the brat on a bun. The brat was excellent and no wonder – we were told that the owner makes them herself. We were both given a salad plate that was yummy – especially the dressing on the lettuce. We got a piece of the dessert-of-the-day to go: German black walnut cake. I just got through eating my half. It does not get any better than this! I really should have gotten two pieces to go – one for each of us. The prices are very reasonable — especially considering the quality of the food. The place is not that hard to find – but it really is way off the beaten path. The restaurant is squeaky clean and appointed with a nice collection of germen art. Some of the paintings are beautiful! The room temperature was just right. The chairs are comfortable enough. The whole place is very unpretentious and straightforward: Just a place to go for Super Food! This is the best German restaurant I have eaten at since leaving Milwaukee, Wisconsin 33 years ago. There is no doubt in my mind that we will be going back to this place with some frequency in the future. As German cooking goes, this is the REALDEAL! So — for a pleasant ride in the country and a perfect meal to complement it – swing by this place – you will not be disappointed.

Have been coming here for years. The food is always the same. Excellent! Hani is a wonderful German cook! I know we lived in Germany for three years. We are so lucky to have this place so close by. Try everything on the menu at least once.

Great tasting German cuisine. Fast prep and friendly service! A relaxing great meal. It’s sort of out of the beaten psyche but there are several vineyards around to enjoy after your meal. We had goulash and Wiener schnitzel with mushroom gravy. Plus the salad of pickled veggies and crisp lettuce was different and flavorful. Will likely return!

Great food and services. Food is fresh and cooked with passion. The place is difficult to find — print out a map or use your GPS but worth the drive. Menu is limited but weekly specials are available. The Schnitzel is juicy and cooked to perfection. The Sauerbraten(Special) was fork tender. Portion are generious. A hidden Gem.

The Unilocal map is Completely Accurate on this one!!! When you are driving there you will probably think the directions are wrong because the neiborhood looks mostly residential! It IS mostly residential 4:07 pm last Wednesday I arrive for Dinner — The owner is in the Kitchen cooking some great dishes! She also comes out and greets all the guests! This is more like going to someones home for dinner than a restaurant! Very relaxed environment! Our server was very sweet, knowledgeable and explained all the dishes very well! Salad is some nice greens(no iceberg lettuce YAY!) surrounded by three stacks of vegetables: marinated Carrots, Green Beans and Red Cabbage. The Salad dressing was simple… probably two ingredients one was Heavy Cream the other was undiscernable, maybe lemon?(too faint for me to recognize which is exactly what I LOVE)! The flavor was unlike I had ever experienced and very good… An EASY4 ½ Unilocal stars! Usually I do not want Salad as a beginning Course, after just a taste of this one I continued until it was gone! My Entrée was the Sausage(Two Bratwurst Links) Fried chunks of Potatoes(almost Cubes) and Sour Kraut(made with Bacon or some kind of meat, severed warm) this is a fresh Kraut! About 4 stars for the Entrée… Better than some and not quite as good as a few. I always hope the meal I’m eating is going to top all the meals I have eaten for that particular dining type experience _______category, or National Origin or Inspiration, etc for that kind of Food/Restaurant! Warm Red Cabbage was another side item I ordered, it was Sweet(not sour) and better than what i have eaten in other German Restaurants! 4 stars! The Goulaush(probably more authentic than I am used too) Very Hunteresque(probably the way it is supposed to be)! The version I like is probably Austrian/American or maybe just American! This is what i would call Hunter sauce(thick Brown Gravy) with chunks of Beef.

Who would have believed it — a very, very nice, authentic German restaurant outside of Yankinville? This is a tiny, unpretentious place, on a rural road, surrounded by houses and farm land — you must trust your GPS system on this one. This restaurant was included in the issue of OURSTATEMAGAZINE that featured 100 things you must eat in North Carolina, published in the summer of 2010, IIRC. The Wiener Schnitzel served here was the food item selected for Yadkin County There is a spartan, functional air to this place, which has less than 15 tables available. There are pictures of German sites on the walls, with German bricabrack on shelves along one wall. The tables and chairs are of the cafeteria variety, servicable but not particularly built for comfort over the long haul. When I called to find out if they were open on Sundays for lunch, I was immediately encouraged by the relatively heavy German accent of the lady’s voice on the answering machine — and yes, they’re open for lunch only one day a week, and that is Sunday — and the unrependent foodies were off. They offer a very limited menu, with a few American items scattered among the German dishes. They offer 3 different schnitzels(each pork) — the classic Wierner Schnitzel, a Hunter’s version with a brown gravy, and a version with a cream gravy. They also have German Goulash and Bratwurst, which are made in house, as is the Sauerkraut. Most of the entrees are accompanied by a side dish, and a cold Germany salad composed of marinated carrots(outstanding), pickled beets(also great), marinated green beans(canned, but very nicely marniated), and lettuce with a creamy German style dressing. This is tasty, and is nicely presented. The Wiener Schnitzel came out perfectly fried, with a lovely brown crust, and was absolutely delicious — this dish is so easy to overcook and be served dry, but not here. We ordered the Pan Fried Potatoes as the side for this, and they were very thinnly sliced, fried to perfection, had no onions present, and were the best pan fried potatoes I’ve ever eaten. Our other entrée was the German Goulash — marniated beef, beautifully stewed in a rich, wine infused gravy, served in a large bowl with made in house spaetzle and a slice or two of raw onion. Another total winner, the beef was so incredibly tender, it simply melted in your mouth. This is a rich, filling dish, and most folks will probably end up taking some home with them. Bread is served with this entrée, but it is obviously a purchased product and added little to this excellent dish. We also ordered a couple of Bratwurst and an side of kraut to go, to be enjoyed later, perhaps even during the family cocktail hour this very evening. The service here was excellent, the owner’s daughter actually waited on us, and was a delight. The entrees with a sald an a side dish run around $ 12, not exactly cheap, but worth it in my mind. If you enjoy simple, authentic, perfectly prepared German food, this should be a destination place for you. It is a simple place well off the beaten path, with a compact menu, and limited ambiance, but worth the effort if this kind of food appeals to you.
