McQuilkin Music

Having recently acquired a beautiful upright from the turn of the (last) century, I endeavored to tune it myself. It was last tuned on the year I was born. I got it pretty close, but I knew it was still in need of some professional help. For a very fair price, not only did Michael do an amazing job tuning our piano (all by ear after setting the initial A-​440), but he also was kind enough to humor my amateur tuning job and teach me a few important lessons about temperament. (I think he could sense that I was no threat to his job security.) He also sold me several key tops that were missing and helped me match them up the right keys, again, for a very fair price.
When he finished, he treated us to some of his outrageously good playing and invited us to his family music night in San Geronimo.
It’s people like this who make me love Marin County.

One senses a kind and intelligent person on the other end; someone who knows his business and able convey his knowledge clearly. 3) His calendar was flexible enough that I did not have to wait three weeks, as the competition had indicated I would have to wait. After the initial call, I saw Michael within a few days.

There are very few people that I have trusted to service my Steinway pianos. Michael has performed both tunings and major restorations for me, and his work has been consistently excellent. Many tuners’ abilities do not go much beyond tuning. However, Michael is a first rate technician who knows pianos thoroughly and is one of the few I have found who can really do what he says he can do. I unhesitatingly recommend him, particularly for fine pianos that really should receive expert care.

I recently attended a family music night that Michael directed and played piano on. His playing was magic AND it brought out the magic in the performers. What a delight. I’d forgotten how much I loved to watch people sing with the kind of heart and expertise that Michael provides.
