A bad experience with JFK Clock Repair has reinforced the old adage«buyer beware». My father, who is 80 years old, brought them a Howard Miller clock in need of repair. It is a mantle clock with a complex winding mechanism that is made in Germany. I was quite surprised to hear from him that, according to JFK Clock repair, the entire mechanism required replacing. They quoted him $ 500 to do the job. Right away my antennae went up. Something didn’t feel quite right. So I suggested my dad retrieve the clock in order that we do some research before spending that much money to repair a clock that cost $ 850 new. It was only a few years old. I purchased it for my parents for their 50th wedding anniversary. Upon doing a little research and speaking with Howard Miller customer support, we determined that a simple replacement of the escapement platform should fix the problem. These can be purchased directly from the manufacturer for $ 59 and installed quite easily in about 15 minutes. So this is what we did and now the clock is running just fine. That turned out to be $ 441 less than the so-called expert at JFK Clock repair had stated was necessary! Given the facts at hand, it is fair to say that the owner’s character is in question. He is a one man operation. His website states that he possess extensive knowledge about clocks, that he has many years’ experience, and that clock repair is his full-time job, not simply a sideline. If he didn’t know that just the escapement platform could be replaced to fix the problem then his claims of being an expert are a fallacy. Otherwise, if he knowingly chose to take advantage of a seemingly naïve customer then he is not trustworthy. In either case, steer clear of this shop as they will rip you off!
