My parents are working on a butterfly garden at their house, and they talked to someone(I think it may have been at the Winter Park Farmers Market one weekend) who suggested that they come by and ask about the best way to go about doing it. So the next time they came into town, we all went together. There’s a huge variety here, and the lady that helped us knew everything there was to know about butterfly-attracting plants, as well as their favorites for food. She seemed really nice, and gave my parents a lot of great information. I walked around for a while, just kind of wandering, looking at all of the great stuff they have, and occasionally being surprised by random pets. A cat, a rabbit, a boar(?!), some birds, etc. If you’re in the area and you’re looking for plants, go here. They deserve your business.

Biosphere Consulting Inc makes most of their profit by doing natural wetland and native plant installations around the Orlando area. Like most installers, they maintain and grow a large part of the stock they use in their operations and have this stock available to the public for purchase. The staff at Biosphere gave us a good explanation about where to find the native plants I was looking for on their property, and also warned me when the plant was better for a wetland area than the more sandy/pine landscape I have. They also have a lot of plants that are attractive to butterflies. The property is often quite wild but the plants are very healthy. I’ve purchased from them several times with good prices and also picked up some seeds – I don’t know if the latter will be successful yet or not. They tend to have smaller plants than some that Lukas stocks and as such cost less which is a big bonus when planting a large garden. They’re a friendly and fun place to visit and was recommended to us by several people at the local Audubon meeting.
