We came here for a board social and had a great time. The staff was friendly, helpful, and attentive, allowing us to sample both wines and beers. The menu is limited(lots of salty choices) but we loved the black bean salsa. The atmosphere is very comfortable. We’ll be back soon.

This place has a lot of potential. The actual space is beautiful and large enough to serve loads of people(inside and out). The small plate menu offers a great variety of cheeses, meats and the likewise. The beer menu is wonderful, I tried 3 different beers I had never even heard of. Our waitress was a little lost at times but she may have been new and she was super sweet so it never bothered me. They had a live band when we went on Saturday night which was nice. We brought our pup and he seemed to really enjoy himself. My only issue was that the cheese we ordered took WAY too long to arrive. It was just sliced cheese with pieces of bread, nothing cooked. We were all quite hungry after drinking and disappointed with the long wait. However I will say that once it arrived it was quite good, especially the fig and honey cheese we selected — delicious!

Excellent local beer and wine selection, great jazz, friendly and knowledgable staff. One of my favorite places to relax and have quality drinks.

Finding a place for the 35+ demographic in this city is about as rare as matching all your socks on laundry day. CV&H was a nice change of pace. They have live music on Saturdays and the atmosphere was quite and relaxing. There are two tv’s in which we were able to catch a little college football away from the sports bar atmosphere. the foods and spirits are mainly locally(nc) grown and brewed, which was a plus. We ordered two small plates/tapas, salmon bites and hummus, which were both fairly tasty. My friend ordered a craft beer and I initially ordered the sangria. It seemed to be a favorite as I looked around the establishment. I wasn’t a fan. It was overly sweet and thick. It would be much better served as a frozen drink.(Don’t ask because we were told they have no ice in the establishment) So if you’re not a true drinker and looking for fruity, this is for you. That led me to a Riesling, which was delightful . However, this is where it gets tricky and we lose a star. As a waiter if you return to a table and their first drink is sitting fairly full and they ask to order a different drink I would think one would be inclined to ask«was there something wrong with your sangria?» .something along those lines. Even if it doesn’t click at that moment, when you are clearing away the dishes and you notice the Riesling glass empty but a full sangria glass remains, something should prompt you at that time. Yup, nothing! Funny, because our server was very pleasant and efficient just not very attentive to details I guess. Everything was reasonably priced in my opinion. All in all it was very nice evening and I will return but skip the Sangria next time.

I love this place. The gentleman who is the owner took the time to talk to me and a friend when we first came in and he always remembers me when I come in. I have only been there three times. The beer selection is good and getting better. I love strong I A’S and am never let down when I visit. Also the staff is knowledgeable enough to guide you to an ale that is what you want. I asked last night what the IBU’s of a specific IPA were. unlike anywhere else I have been, they knew what that meant and told me. There are meat and cheese platters which are just wonderful and I suggest getting them. All in all I can’t say strongly enough that if you like beer, ale and or wine you must go there. The only con would be the location. It isn’t. lose enough to my home. but that was probably God’s plan to keep me at home more than at a wonderful establishment like this. I also hope the location doesn’t lead to them struggling for business. I will find a way to make it 6 stars if they move to King nc.

We visited there twice. Both times the service was pleasant but we were very underwhelmed overall. The concept is pretty col. However, the selections of both wine and beer were minimal. For a «wine and beer place» — one would think the variety might be more extensive. Mostly NC wines(generally quite sweet) and the good beers from NC were not in evidence. Should my rating be a «2» or a «3?» In my view a «3» suggests I’d return. So, I’d rate this place a «strong 2.»

What a great idea! Elegant informality just down from Old Salem, this is the perfect spot for a light meal and glass of wine or beer. Terrific for groups, the living room seating options make gatherings very easy. I sampled several local red wines from my first ever self-service wine dispenser and we shared a cheese plate and charcuterie. I love the fact that this place is dedicated to local foods and I really hope they do well. Two things, however, will present a challenge; one within the owners control and the other not. Service was very friendly and knowledgeable but unforgivably slow. I took them more than 30 minutes to server or two plates and there was hardly anybody there. I don’t know what they were doing back there but not waiting on us. The other thing is although they have great outside seating and it’s nice to be close to Old Salem, one of the nicest things about Winston-Salem, they are right on busy South Main. The traffic noise sort of spoils the ambiance. Nevertheless, I’ll be back. We need more places like this.

My husband and and I relocated to the Winston area recently and were pleased to stumble onto this place. The atmosphere is elegant but not stuffy and attention to detail was evident in the hand carved bar and tables. We visited on a Sunday afternoon so didn’t parttake in the sampling room on this visit but we loved the wide selection of wines and beer made locally. Drew, our server, was very knowledgable on the beer side as also has experience as a brewmaster. The only drawback I see is that the are open Thursday through Sunday so we would need to plan a return visit rather than pop in during business hours. We were treated to the famous Southern hospitality and made to feel welcome. We will go back and maybe try artisan cheeses with wine next time. There was plenty of room for a medium sized group. Probably not suitable for children as it is a place focused on alcohol. Looked like a nice outdoor seating area as well… if only the rain would stop. I love the free parking nearby.

A group of 15 of us went to Carolina’s Vineyards and Hops after a family friend’s senior performance at UNCSA. This was our last stop of the evening on our way back to Chapel Hill. Carolina’s Vineyards and Hops is located inside a fairly generic looking office building. From the outside it looks like it could be a bank. The décor inside is decent and there are TVs if you are interested in watching sports. They have a fairly extensive beer and wine list and most options are local. So what’s the problem? The service. I ordered a cider which cost $ 7. Typically cider is served in a pint glass. When the server brought out the drink, it was literally 2 oz. No exaggeration. At first I didn’t want to complain but the group consensus was that this was ridiculous(and it was!). I went to the bar and kindly asked why there wasn’t more cider. I explained that I’d always been served cider in a pint glass. They explained to be that at CV&H, cider is a 4 oz. pour. Okay, fine. A 4 oz. pour is stingy but this pour was literally 2 oz. They made me feel extremely uncomfortable and ended up getting the manager who made me feel even more uncomfortable. Eventually it came to light that this was the last of their bottle of cider and they didn’t have 4 oz. left so instead they poured what was left and tried to pass it off as a full glass. Eventually the manager took back the 2 oz. of cider and begrudgingly offered me another drink. The popcorn was great, the atmosphere is fairly generic and the concept of self-serve wine is novel. However, after this unpleasant experience, I won’t ever be returning to CV&H.
