Had it for dinner tonight. Given the price, absolutely spectacular. Terrific service, no wait, reasonable prices. The textures of the sushi were an experience — I caught my wife closing her eyes to just bask in the flavors while eating one of the rolls. We had the beef udon soup, the Mexican roll, the thing with Mackeral(very interesting and we liked it, but not for everyone), and some awesome japanese ice cream. I’d recommend all, especially the Mexican roll. A very non-pretentious place in a very pretentious area. A breath of fresh air. We will be back many times!

Please read the following review through this important filter: I’m not a big sushi person. That said, we order take out and delivery from Kyoto on a fairly regular basis. I almost always get the chicken udon soup, which I love. I used to order the salmon teriyaki, but gave up on it after too many orders had super thin salmon absolutely drowning in sauce(I know, I know, it’s a sushi place, why am I ordering salmon teriyaki?). My husband gets nigiri sushi, and my sons get gyoza, shumai, and negi maki. My only real complaint is that almost every single time they deliver, they’ve forgotten something.

Great food! However it didn’t feel authentic but that won’t be the case if you know what your looking for. Service seemed slow even though we were the only customer. It did seem they had a lot of take out orders so that may of been why. I had a positive experience! If you’re in the Winnetka, Hubbard Woods or Glencoe this is your best Japanese option!

Great service. Entertaining staff. Consistently amazing food. Our family has been going here for years and our kids have been coming on their own since they got their drivers licenses.

The food here was good, nothing spectacular. We had some rolls, tempura and moochi for dessert. Went back recently for take out and again everything was good. Seems a little over priced for what you get.

It was all right. We sat at the counter of this local sushi shop enjoying the banter between the chefs and those that are regulars. Had the Beef Combo platter and a selection of sushi and rolls. Perfectly fine, nothing out of this world but more than okay. Say«HI» to the turtles in the tank at the door, they are ham’s.

My husband and I stopped here before back to school night so we were really pressed for time(and had to be out the door in 50 minutes). The waiter was attentive and quick and we were out when we needed to be. We had miso soup, edamame, a few rolls with the standout for me being the Mexican roll and the standout for my husband being a special eel roll. They serve beer and wine. With an awesome turtle tank and fish tank, the place seemed like it would be very kid friendly(although it was mostly tables of adults when we dined). The décor is no frills but clean. The warm wash cloth when you sit down was a nice touch. The restaurant looked like they do a good takeout service but we enjoyed dining in and we will be back with the kiddos next time. I hope we get the same waiter because he enhanced the experience.

Hidden gem and our go-to sushi spot on the North Shore. We are regulars and have never been disappointed. Love the Mexican roll, special eel, crunchy roll, gyoza, tempura, and sashimi. Service is excellent — they remember your number if you call for carry out, and know what you typically order! Worth the trip if you are on the North Shore, and a must-have on speed dial for carry out or delivery sushi if you live in the area.

Everything is great, I especially recommend the yakisoba(although it is heavy on the onions, just in case that’s not your preference). The inside isn’t super fancy, but I always got takeout, so it was never an issue. I used to order here all the time, and I never had an issue. I’ve since moved but I miss this little place!

My first experience in this hellhole & it was very poor. They gave me the SMALLEST ginger portion with my sushi, and they brought me ONE hand roll & charged me $ 7.50 for ONEHANDROLL… omgggggggggggg I COULDNTBELIEVE how small the sushi portion was, they really wanted to give me the SMALLEST portion POSSIBLE… Then inside the hand roll was the smallest portion of eel I have ever received, and it was supposed to be the same amount as a 5-piece eel sushi cut roll, but I didn’t want rice so he made it into ONE hand roll & told me it contained the same amount of eel & other things. I feel Soooooooooo ripped off. If I’m starving & dying I will NEVERRRRRRRR return to this place again. I HATEEEEEEEEE this place… one of the smallest portions & worst food I’ve ever had. Good bye & good riddance

This feels like a neighbourhood venue. Inside was clean — but don’t come expecting anything fancy. The service was just great — we asked for recommendations on sushi and on the sake — both were excellent — we had 2 bottles of the sake in the end it was so good. The waiter tried to engage with my son about the turtles he was so obviously enthralled with — to the point that my son actually started drawing them — which is amazing as he says in his words«I’m rubbish at drawing». The kids shared an evening bento meal with an extra bowl of miso, adults had edamame, tempura veggies and 2 types of rolls. All tasted fresh and loved the addition of jalapeño instead of wasabi in one of the dishes. As we were leaving the waiter saw my son looking at the turtles in the tank — he said they looked hungry and gave my son some food to feed them — what a treat! A perfect place to go with the kids for their lunch or dinner. Glad we took the time to go in — it always looks shut in the daytime. We will go back as we felt so welcomed.

As much as I love supporting family owned neighborhood businesses, I am so upset at my Kyoto experience that I can barely even give them the one star. My husband and I order sushi to go here on a weekly basis, we’ve been doing so for the past year. Last week I called at 9PM to place a to go order, I hung up the phone and my husband said why don’t we just go eat there, so I called right back and cancelled my order. Seven minutes later we arrive at Kyoto and proceed to the sushi counter to sit and order. The older lady behind the counter gave us a look and asked if we were picking up, I said no we are dining in. She said they were closed, I looked around and saw to two other tables eating and have been ordering here long enough to know they are open till 10PM on weekends. I questioned her and she looked at a younger boy, maybe 10ish, and he said no it’s 9 today and it was 10 yesterday, blatantly and rudely lying to us. We walked out and I was so upset that we were treated so poorly that I decided to call them. This time the older son picked up, I could tell he knew his mom, or whoever she is, grandma, whatever, was being rude to us and apologized. An apology is not good enough, we were seriously embarrassed that they blatantly told us to leave. I am never stepping foot in this place again no will not stand for anyone treating me in the manner which they did.

Come here every year for my birthday, on top of eating here at least once a month. By far my favorite restaurant. Best sushi and all around food, plus the mochi for dessert just makes the meal. Service is great and friendly.

I had an awful experience at this restaurant and cannot recommend it. It’s unfortunate, there are a shortage of restaurants in our area but the service was terrible, the owner is quite rude and unhelpful, and the staff seems to be taking his lead in this respect. They have had several opportunities to apologize for their poor service but have refused to do so. No stars would be a more accurate review.

Over the years, we have ordered take out and lunched at Kyoto Sushi Restaurant. We have never had a bad dining experience. While the décor and ambience is bland, the food is wonderful. You can’t go wrong with the shrimp tempura which I normally accompany with the vegetable tempura as an appetizer. The avocado rolls are delicious and definitely a dish to try. Take out is the best, since you get everything except the soup. The serving sizes are very large and can be spread over two meals.

We’ve eaten there several times, and can’t think of when we’ll ever return. Service was horrible with every visit. They have one waitress and she is very nice but the owner and her family have no desire to thank their customers. It’s a really close restaurant and with no other sushi options, we thought we could just put up with the attitude especially with take-out. It was never ready on time. They have a ton of take-out, others obviously don’t want to sit it the place ever, it sort of smells like cheap cleaning solution. The last time we went, we actually got a table and our guest was served a bad piece of fish. The owner was so rude, saying that although it was discolored, it was fine. No it’s not!!! My food was fine but it kills your appetite when someone else’s food at your table isn’t right. They need to clean up their act, stop overcharging, and loose the attitude!!!

Stumbled upon this nice little Japanese restaurant while on a business trip thru town. We had an almost desperate need for some fresh Asian faire and Kyoto did just great! This place is located along a main street type shopping area amongst many niche shops and little eateries. It appears to be an older, family run place, but the décor is not to that«run down» stage yet. The place was clean, even the fish tanks and turtle tank(which I was pretty enthralled with) were clean and maintained. I even visited the bathroom which is always a good indicator. We both ordered a lunch bento type box, chicken and steak. Both were substantial and fresh. The steak teriyaki that I was was fresh and perfectly cooked, and the California roll was a great side to it. This is a worthwhile lunch or dinner stop, the sushi bar looked quaint and if I am to find myself in this area again, you will probably find me at the sushi bar!

This had been one of my favorite lunch places until today. The food has always been fresh and good. The place itself is nothing special with so-so service. I ordered a salad and then asked for extra dressing. The server brought some in a tiny silver cup, maybe a tablespoon in there. On my bill they charged me 75 cents! When I asked the waiter to take it off he told me «no» and could not change it. I called later to ask them about this. At first they explained that is how they do things because of the expense, then they kind of apologized. I asked them if I order a hamburger with ketchup and want more ketchup should I be charged? I come here a lot and and send many friends there. I can’t believe they would do this and risk losing a customer. They should watch out when Once Upon A Bagel opens next door… they are going to lose their lunch business!

The sushi and sashimi a decent. I had the sashimi combo for dinner; some fish were very thinly sliced. The tuna pieces weren’t totally defrosted yet. Bento box for lunch has a lot of food(teriyaki beef + shrimp/veggie tempura + california roll + salad + rice + soup). I’d recommend here for lunch for sure. For dinner, I’d venture into their sushi rolls. In terms of service, I did not get the family-owned, friendly service that a few other reviewers have mentioned.
