Plaza Del Lago

Of course my phone was all filled up and wouldn’t let me snap a picture of this off-​the-​beaten-​path find (darn!), but I promise to go back and get one… because you won’t want to miss this outdoor shopping area. At night they have glistening lights in the trees, and I can only imagine what it must look like during the holidays.
I’ve been here before, many years go, and I’m glad I stopped by tonight. Though I didn’t shop at any of the stores and was just passing through, you can find a bit of this and that. There is a high-​end bike shop (Higher Gear), cute gift shop called Yellow Bird, and then there’s CVS, Jewel, a nice looking furniture shop, and Convito restaurant right next door.
There is also a super funky and odd indoor mall area with service businesses (printing, dentist, etc.). It’s a bit dark in there and reminds me of a ghost town area from one of those western dude ranch places — I know that sounds weird, but it just does.
As Scott B mentioned in his review, Plaza del Lago is architecturally significant and today it is mostly all filled up.
The best part about shopping here is the fact that there is a parking lot with rock star parking. Can’t go wrong with that!

This is an architecturally beautiful and historic little mall area near the lake in Wilmette. It’s not quite as historic as Market Square in nearby Lake Forest, but it has been around since the 1920’s. The fascinating history of the mall and surrounding area can be found online at Wikipedia and elsewhere.
In present day, the plaza seems to have been in decline in recent years. However, there does seem to be some attempts to turn things around, with the smart decision of bringing a CVS in and a remodel of the Jewel that has been there for decades. Hopefully they can continue to attract new stores as this is a wonderful, significant property with a lot of history that deserves to be preserved and remain useful to the community.

Plaza del lago is a wonderful place. I going there to get my coffee from starbucks and then shopping at Jewel and then checking out the unique stores they have.
