Pasar Malam by Laut

Delicious! We like Laut near union square but really loved the casual and colorful atmosphere of Pasar Malm. The food was delicious and the menu super interesting.
We got two appetizers, and if you check in on Unilocal they send you some fishballs which were perfect. Two entrees and a few beers later and we were buzzed and filled with delicious spicy food for a really reasonable price.
We made a reservation but didn’t need one. It was pretty empty when we went around 8pm on a tuesday although it was freezing out so maybe that reduced the foot traffic. It did pick up as the evening went on.

I can start off by saying that the service was really great and the restaurant had a pretty cool ambience, with a surprising amount of seating. But, when I came here with my boyfriend at 7:30 PM on a prime Friday night and there was but one other table seated in the restaurant, I should’ve wondered why.
The food came out fast and our server was nice enough to explain what everything was, but nothing blew us away. The whole place looked like it was just trying too hard to be that cool Malaysian place that fit into the very hip area of Williamsburg it’s located in. I wasn’t impressed by anything that we ate. It was mediocre at best. And some stuff was exceptionally spicy without any indication on the menu. Myself and my boyfriend are okay with spicy food, but just knowing what we are getting into beforehand would be nice.
My other qualm was that they didn’t have several menu items available, and we weren’t told that in advance. So after we fought our indecision and combed through the menu for a good ten minutes, the item we finally decided on wasn’t even available, and the server listed about 3 – 4 other items that also weren’t available. I work in food. I know that things run out or aren’t fresh, etc. But, give the table a heads up of what you don’t have before someone gets their heart set on it.

Being Malaysian, I like to try restaurants in NYC that claim to make traditional Malaysian food. This place definitely passes, not with flying colors, but it gets pretty damn close. The flavors are all correct, and the style of cook is almost perfect, probably the best example being the char quay teow, which i have on a weekly basis in Malaysia, and definitely enjoy at this restaurant. The service is a bit lacking, but the food definitely makes up for it.

We enjoyed ourselves immensely last night; it must have been obvious, and also appreciated, because although we «only» ordered six dishes, we received seven! Apparently our guttural groans got us no sympathy from the kitchen-​staff, who could just as easily see us loving on all their delicious creations as we could see them preparing these magnificent dishes — so they sent us a dessert, ouch!
The crispy salty peppery herbaceous squid was great, as was the beefy eggy oniony peppery curried pancake. The beef rendang was melt-​in-​your-​mouth cut-​it-​with-​a-​spoon tender, while its voluptuous sauce had us going wild, taste after taste. The hakka-​crispy shrimp were incredible, obviously fresh, beautifully cooked, zesty vivacious addictive.
The only – minor insignificant – problem was when we started getting really full, and the next dishes weren’t very «new.» Although it was all still really delicious, the curry beef fried rice had the same cuts of meat as my previous beef dish, just in a different preparation. Same with the seafood wattanhor, which had the same exact same shrimp and the exact same squid as previous dishes, but the vegetables and soup itself were banging.
Next time, which there will definitely be, not only will we order different preparations and presentations, but we will also make sure to order different components, just to make sure our palettes are perpetually piqued, which shouldn’t be a problem, here, where everything is great, across the board.

Malaysian street food, anyone? It’s a casual, affordable option before or after a movie. We have tried a variety of dishes, all were yummy. Craving that roti canai? This is your place.

Best laksa I’ve had in the US. The papaya salad was delicious, as well as the char kway teow.

As soon as you walk in, you’ll be pulled into what could be a night market.
We ordered the Murtabak instead of going for the Roti Canai which ended up exceeding our expectations. I definitely recommend trying something else from their Roti section.
We actually had a hard time ordering just because the menu was so large and varied (the Unilocal menu on here doesn’t do it justice). The main dishes we ordered were the staple Malaysian Curry and the Asam Laksa. We thought the curries overall could have been spicier, but otherwise it was rich and savory. My boyfriend ended up just asking for some sambal sauce on the side, which was an easy fix. The Asam Laksa was delicious and perfect for a cold night.
Their apps and entrees are in decent portions, and decently priced. Definitely a good menu for sharing. They have plenty of seating, and a large family style table in the back for big groups.
They have a large selection of drinks to choose from (alcoholic and non). But if you’re someone like my boyfriend who enjoys a well made strong cocktail, you might be disappointed to find out that their cocktails are only sake/​soju based.
Oh, and don’t forget to take advantage of the Unilocal check-​in offer. The fish balls were delicious and perfect to start off our meals.
The service was excellent. Attentive but not too overbearing. Would definitely come back again.

I recently discovered this restaurant after eating at their sister restaurant in Manhattan– The Groupon drew me in.
There’s so many delicious dishes that you can choose from– but starting with the roti is always a good idea!
And to that list you might want to add the drunken noodles they are pretty darn good!
I love the restaurant itself looks like street in Malaysia at night it’s so cute. Psar malam meansnight market!

Excellent Malaysian Food in the heart of Williamsburg, the service & food was great they made my friend & I feel right at home. I’ll definitely recommend others to check it out also get the Groupon as well. They accommodated all our requests.

Wonderful atmosphere, friendly staff and great Malaysian fare. I really enjoyed dinner here with a party of 2 and think it would be a great place for a large group that is easy on the wallet and there are tons of things to try. Saw some Unilocal mentions of small portions. I thought the beef rendang, nigh market noodles and the roti were all ample portions and I left happy (with my leftovers).
One thing the restaurant should take note of: the spicy-​level-​indication system on the menu is off. We got a roti that had no spice demarcation — though it did use the word spicy twice in the description — and it had quite a kick. We also ordered the Night Market Noodles — the only menu item with 2 spicy markers — and it had barely any heat at all. Both were great.

So much deeelicious food to choose from — you just have to try it all. Really liked the roti telur, on the spicy side be warned. Red fried rice with chicken also a winner. Soft shell crab good, but the sauce was a bit too canned for my taste. Cocktails were so-​so, better stick to beer.

Having grown up living in Asia for majority of my childhood, I was super excited to hear about Pasar Malam. I was born in Malaysia, lived in Thailand and Singapore, so reading the menu was music to my eye balls. While the food was good, I found some of it to not be super authentic. Not sure if due to location certain ingredients couldn’t be sourced, but the black pepper and chili crab generally isn’t made with soft shell crab — at least the ones I used to eat with my dad. Also, random rap music was playing which took away from the otherwise perfect décor and atmosphere. I would, however, still recommend it because the chicken and rice was delicious and all in all, the menu was great.

What a bunch of failures. I ordered food here. It took them 10 minutes to make the food. The delivery guy got here 2 hours later, (I’m about 10 blocks away) rang my neighbor’s doorbell instead of mine, decided I wasn’t home (I was, but my neighbor wasn’t), and just returned to the restaurant, keeping both my money and my food. When I called the first time, it was about an hour in. They said «the food is on the way.» An hour later, I called a second time. The delivery guy answered. He started talking about a doorman (that’s the building next door). Then his story changed to «I rang, but nobody answered». I told him that I had been sitting here the whole time. He said «ok. we’ll get you your food.» I’ll let you know when I get it. I’m still waiting.

I’m a Malaysian born and bred. Overall it’s probably as close as you’re going to get to real Malaysian food. This does not mean that it was great, all I’m saying is that you’d be hard-​pressed to get more authentic Malaysian food (maybe Nyonya?).
We ordered Roti Telur, it came hot with a delicious curry. 5 stars. Then we got sambal sting-​ray and chili pan mee. The sting-​ray was pretty good, the sambal could have been a little spicier but I guess they were catering to American tastes.
The pan mee was a disappointment. This is probably my favorite noodles from home but it didn’t really taste anything like it. Couldn’t taste the chili and the sauce was bleh.

Malaysian cuisine is so great because it combines three of my favorite cuisines (Thai, Chinese and Indian) into one. This place does it well. Started with the fish balls in a deliciously sweet and spicy peanut sauce. Continued with the roti canai served big, flakey and soft with a super flavorful curry sauce on the side. Ordered the chicken rendang which was terrific. Tried the nasi lemak, an assortment of pickled veggies, peanuts with crispy fried anchovy, curry chicken, blazingly spicy shrimp all served with cocoanut rice and a puff pastry. Very tasty. Honestly, I can agree with other posts about the portions being a tad small for the price. However, after ordering a roti to start, we were all stuffed by the end. This place is great and the food is wonderful. Service is helpful and friendly. I can’t wait to come back.

It’s a Must go destination… If your in Manhattan… Just take the L train and in a few stops your there, it’s not that far from the station unless you walked around and then decided to go to it like we did…
Let’s break it down to why I gave it 5 stars:
1– we were greeted at the door by a very stratified costumer and were told it’s amazing food, and were introduced to the owner as soon as we walked in, very nice person.
2. The theme is amazing, u almost forget that you were walking around in Brooklyn, the atmosphere inside is top notch and the waitress advised us to change tables to where there was better air circulation, considering that it was hot outside and we’ve been walking for a while.
3. Now comes the food… Omg… It tasted amazing… Granted we focused on sea food manly due to dietary restriction, it was amazing… Everything was well seasoned, cooked well and prevented well… We are with our eyes, nose and mouth; it looked amazing, smelled amazing and tasted amazing… Serious complements to the chief, we even had a picky eat with us who doesn’t like Asian food and she enjoyed the dishes.
4. I hope you were able to conclude from 1,2 & 3 that the service was amazing, our waitress was great and accommodating, we also revived great recommendations from a second person who works there but felt a bit ignored as I had more dietary restrictions than my friend did, wish they had halal meat but never the less what we ordered tasted good to each and every last bite
5. If you check in on Unilocal you get a free fish ball appetizer, only one check in will do, if other people in the group check in, they will still give you one appetizer so save the coupons for next time. Which was a bit of a bummer cause that how other places do it… Anyways the final star goes for the prices… We ordered so much and the potions were good and ended up with $ 100 bill, haven’t seen that since I came to nyc… Great food and affordable prices what else can you ask for…

The restaurant has an exotic décor. The menu looks interesting and I tried a few of them:
Bandung: rose flavored drink with basil seed and condensed milk. It’s a sweet drink, but I didn’t really tasted the rose flavor.
Achar Salad: pineapple, string bean, carrot, cabbage, peanut, sesame, cucumber and turmeric. Tangy and a little spicy with a lot of crushed peanuts.
Vegetable Char Kway Teow: flat broad noodles with chives, bean sprouts, egg & soy sauce with home made chili sauce, broccoli, tofu. It’s good and filling.
Roti Pisang: Indian pancake with banana. Warm pancakes stuffed with banana and sprinkled with coconut, black and white sesame seeds. It’s delicious!
The service was quick because I was there for an early dinner, so the place was empty.

Good for a quick bite to eat if going to the cinema across the road. The concept of the place is a Malaysian night market. Staff were friendly & food was nice. The cheque for 2 of us came to $ 52 which I thought was pricey for what it was. I got the curried fish wrapped in a banana leaf with coconut rice, and my husband tried the Char Kway Teow, which is a noodle dish.
As we checked in on Unilocal we received complimentary fish balls and we also ordered a roti with curry sauce as an appetizer.
I liked the concept of the place and the food was nice, but I felt it was lacking something. I would have liked some vegetables with my dish. I didn’t feel the price reflected the food. Possibly the price was based on location?

Compared to your everyday Malaysian food such as «Nyonya» this place is much different and has their uniqueness of food plating and taste.
It’s not the best Malaysian food I’ve had, but I do recommend trying because it’s different. Their curry is definitely a little spicier compared to Nyonya curry base.
