Ho Yi Chinese Restaurant

This is a very special hole in the wall little nook of a Chinese restaurant they primary focus on take out but they do have sit down space in the restaurant. I’ve been here a few times before using this Unilocal app but I’ve never had any problems the food is always very good very hot temperature wise and you can always set the spice level to whatever you want. There a small local business with a two person crew and they make some of the best Chinese I think in the area.

There are plenty Chinese restaurants in the area but this one has Thai and Malaysian options as well. One of the owners is from Malaysia. The Mee Goreng is my absolute favorite!

Given how positive the other reviews were, I was really taken aback by how poor this place was.
When my wife and I walked in, most of the tables were covered in trash or half-​eaten food. There was only one server running the front of the house, and she was clearly overwhelmed. She even snapped at a small kid running around while his father was paying for takeout. The father got so upset that he took his take-​out order and slammed it on the table before leaving without paying. Another family came in afterwards and waited up front for a good 3 minutes before deciding the seat themselves. It took a good five minutes before the server got their order.
The food wasn’t much better. My wife’s wonton soup was salty and stale, and she only ate about half of her kung pao chicken before leaning over to tell me that she couldn’t eat anymore because it tasted so bad. My dinner wasn’t much better. I got the schezuan beef, and the canned bamboo sprouts gave it a tinny taste. It was overly sweet without any salt or heat to balance out the flavors.
There are plenty of places where you can get solid Chinese food for a few bucks a plate, this wasn’t one of them. Maybe it was an off day, but I wouldn’t go back.

Very tasty food that is very inexpensive. The General Tso’s chicken and Kung Pao dishes are fantastic. The owner is also incrediblt nice and friendly. They always have different daily specials with cheap eats.

Like previously stated by another reviewer, the owner was absolutely lovely, and because of this I truly wanted to love the food. unfortunately, the wonton soup was way too salty and the fried noodles were really stale — I couldn’t finish it. My main entrée was okay, but not good enough for me to return any time soon.

This restaurant is inexpensive and surprisingly good. The food was very tasty and the the shrimp and meat were not overcooked (a common problem in Chinese restaurants). The sauces were well seasoned and ranged from good to delicious. The eggplant was especially good. The hot and sour soup was subtly flavored and a nice way to start the dinner. My son order Ma Po tofu, which wasn’t on the menu. He was a little disappointed because it wasn’t authentic, but they made it was one of their available sauces and I thought it was quite nice. The waitress (who I suspect is also an owner) asked if we wanted spicy and we said we did. The Szechuan dishes were perfectly seasoned from my perspective, hot without mouth burning. My son, a fire eater, was a little disappointed.
My only complaint is that the sauces had a bit too much corn starch. Food was served on styrofoam plates, which is understanding given that it seemed to be a 2-​person operation on a Tuesday night, but something of a turn-​off. On the other hand, the service was terrific and the food was dirt cheap. It’s better than any Chinese food I’ve had in Syracuse and good enough to thrive as a neighborhood Chinese restaurant in Philadelphia or New York. I’d definitely go back.

Ho Yi, the best Chinese restaurant in Wilkes-​barre and beyond. Period.
After 2 visits the owner knew my name and refused to let me tip her. She physically crossed out the tip spot on the credit card bill.
My friend attempted to tip her once by hiding money under his completed check. She actually chased him out the restaurant to give it back and forced him to take a free 2 liter of soda as punishment.
The food is quirky and slightly more authentic than your typical American Chinese fare. Its not uncommon to find wood ear mushrooms in dishes, which according to the owner, is good for blood circulation.
The hot and sour soup is perfect consistency and taste, neither too hot or too sweet, neither too gelatinous nor too runny. The won ton soup is the BEST I’ve ever tasted, with the most delicate yet flavorful broth.
Huge portions, great atmosphere, wonderful people. I came back after living in Philly for a year, and she remembered me AND my girlfriend without a hitch, and my favorite dish.
