We were looking for a cheap filling meal that would tide us over for the long ride home from the Cape May/Wildwood area to Central Jersey. What first caught my eye was a sign that said Steak Hoagies. Since my traveling companion is a self-pronounced carnivore, I thought Gus’ might do the trick. Located on a side street, away from the hustle and bustle of Wildwood, Gus appears to cater to mostly locals. Gus’ menu contains pretty standard fare. Pizza, stromboli, steaks, hoagies, salads, sandwiches, hamburgers and pasta. It also serves typical side orders like cheese fries, mozzarella sticks and hot wings. We ordered a Cheese Steak Stromboli, the regular size, which serves two, and hot wings. Both items were excellent. My biggest complaint with chain restaurants is their failure to use fresh ingredients and their tendency to process everything to the point of bland. No such complaints here. Everything is made to order, but it’s worth the wait. The dough tastes like dough you would find in a really good old-fashioned pizzeria. Light and not overworked with a great aroma. Soft on the inside, but not gummy. Red sauce was good. The wings were excellent. The chicken was juicy and lightly breaded. They used large pieces of chicken and it tasted like something my mother would cook. Other items on the menu of interest include Maria’s Specialty which is Breaded Chicken Cutlet, Extra Sharp Provolone Cheese, Broccoli Rabe and Roasted Peppers. I’m not really a huge fan of breaded chicken, but this definitely sound like something I would like to try the next time. The place was clean and decorated in characteristic pizzeria fashion. Red and white checked tablecloths with liberal use of the green, white and red Italian flag color scheme. Even the floor tiles were green, white and red. It was homey and unpretentious. With Gus, what you see is what you get, good food at a good price.
