This is by far my favorite donut shop in Wichita. After Dukin Donuts left town years ago, Chicago Donuts(in the building formerly owned by Dunkin) came along to fill the hole left in my life. The décor and atmosphere leave a lot to be desired, but I don’t pay much attention to it. As soon as I walk in I’m looking at the display to see what tasty treats I am going to take home. As far as cake donuts go, these fried rings of goodness can’t be beat. They have that slight crunch as you bite into them and are soft in the inside. My favorites are the coconut crunch, applespiced, and the original. I tried Dunkin Donuts last week after they reopened, but to me they are still a notch below Chicago Donuts in terms of texture and flavor.

If there are donut purists out there, they might scoff at me saying that I prefer cake donuts over their yeasty brethren, but I can’t help it — when it comes to fried dough, I like the kind that gets its leavening from chemicals rather than live microorganisms. Plus, they stay fresher longer, which is a plus when they are sitting on my counter and taunting me all day to eat them. They’re not located in the better part of Harry, but they’re still plenty popular, and at $.80/per, it’s easy to get their special(a dozen and a coffee for $ 7.something) for the office, while keeping the coffee for you. It looked like most of the business was getting their treats to go, which is just as well considering the atmosphere of the place was a bit lacking. Donut Whole they are not, but I can’t say that I didn’t enjoy their red velvet donut.

It’s a squalid little place, you surely wouldn’t want to stay long. But they make what are easily the best cake donuts I’ve found in Wichita.

The place had a old dirty diner feel, but it was not one of those places that would make you feel nestalgic. The donuts were not offensive and tasted fine if you never new what a great donut tasted like. This place has some good qualities and I would eat their donuts if someone brought them for treat day at the office. But if say krispy kream and or the donut whole were also brought then I might just pass up Chicago Donut. I definately would not eat at this location for fear of a staff infection, but the area where the donuts were kept seemed clean enough. All I can say is beware when entering, but I doubt you’ll hate the flavor unless you catch them on a bad day or have ever tasted an exceptional donut.
