This little gem is in the middle of the los angeles county sheriffs academy. There is a lot of history, dating back to the 1800’s. if you have the time, and it will only take 15 minutes or so, give this little spot a whirl.

Great place to visit to learn the history of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the largest Sheriff’s department in the nation. Admission and parking is free. Inside you’ll find an old Sheriff car, helicopter, diecast cars(my favorite part) and pictures and information of their history. There is also a store attached so you can buy key chains, mugs, shirts and other law enforcement related items. Great place to visit.

Nothing like terror sweat to bring the day full circle. The horror:
I’ll get to explaining that in a minute. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Museum is free and replete with law-enforcement artifacts. When you enter this free museum, you first encounter their reproduction of a 1938 Studebaker Commander patrol car. One room over there’s a chopper with a recreation of a larger helicopter used in search and rescue(photo: ). In another area, surrounded by saddles and rodeo memorabilia they have a Knott’s Berry Farm-like set up of Sheriff Martin Aguirre’s office and jail(photo: ). Yeah, it’s a dummy sitting in the dark with a skull on its desk and another dummy standing in the dark cell(photo: ). FREAKINGCREEPY. The rest of the museum included displays on cockfighting(photo: ), carnival scams, past sheriffs, Tiburcio Vásquez, DARE and SANE memorabilia, forensics, and a gallery loaded with weaponry(photo: ). They also had a tape running on a loop of with footage of things like Vic Morrow’s death on the set of a «Twilight Zone» movie, East L.A. riots, and a short doc on Charles Manson. There was also clips of the carnage left after the Aeroméxico Flight 498 crash in Cerritos. This was something that I’d never really seen before, and it happened on the other side of town from my house. Even though I was only 1, reading about it over the years just makes me wonder if it could have been our neighborhood that was hit and that we should feel lucky that it wasn’t. It’s an interesting museum, and the«gift shop» is actually more akin to being a sheriff’s supply store. Nice.

I came here on a Wednesday night to take a Sheriffs test and parking was not an issue. They have free parking and they have a big map once you make your way in. I was still a little lost and scared. This place reminded me of my old middle school. It was lonely and dark with brick hallways. Fortunately I spotted a sheriff who as on duty who pointed me on to the right direction. You can find free classes to prepare you for the physical part of your exam. You can train with soon to be officers or people who are going into the process. This a great way begining, because you can talk to officers who already passed the test and you can get an inside scoop.

I learn something new everyday… The lifesized model of the old-west recreation of the sherriff’s jail was scary! Hahaha!!!
