The Highland State Recreation Area spans White Lake and Highland Townships in Oakland County, Michigan. It’s picturesque summer hiking and winter skiing trails are pleasant and enjoyable. The Haven Hill section of the park, which surrounds the primary entrance on Highland Road, contains a National Natural Landmark Area, designated as a unique collection of Michigan’s forest types. Edsel and Eleanor Ford once maintained a grand country estate at Haven Hill, which was later passed to the state of Michigan to eventually form Highland State Recreation Area. Several of the historic buildings of Haven Hill are being rejuvenated by the volunteers of the Friends of Highland Recreation Area and are great self-guided tour elements while hiking in the park.
