The coffee is wonderful! Friendly service, great and fresh food. Can’t wait to come back

Thanks Unilocal for the suggestion, it’s a great diner we will be coming to more often. Breakfast was done the way it should… even the small details addressed without question. Great coffee too and waitresses provide great attentive service.

Don’t be fooled by the exterior this old school diner has some tasty food. Pierogies and potatoe pancakes were homemade, fresh and delicious. Omlettes are light and fluffy and not burnt like most diners. Prices are great. If you are in the area, stop by this nostalgic diner for some tasty cheap eats.

How about posting some photos from the past year. All food pics are old. They are always closed; who’s eaten there in the past year? I’d like to know who’s giving it ANY review; there are never any cars there.

Thank you SOMUCH to Ewa, the owner of Makris Diner for opening her doors to us after hours for us to do our photo shoot. Thank you for making us food too — such a treat!

Fantastic omelettes, amazingly fresh fruit and a friendly atmosphere! I visited early on a Saturday morning and felt that I had stepped back into my mother’s kitchen and was surrounded by long lost relatives bantering about the old times. It’s worth the trip to have a great meal and escape to a more peaceful time.

You hardly wait 5 min after you order then BOOM your food has arrived. Very hospitable staff!

I’ve been coming here for years and the food was always great. Solid ingredients and well prepared. Not sure what happened but the ingredients and quality have changed for the worse. I hope they go back to the way it was. What happened?

I go here once a week for breakfast and I love it! First, the staff is excellent. The owner and waitresses are all friendly and welcoming. The food is also pretty good. You can order anything as you like and it’s all yummy.

Truly horrible; absolutely don’t understand how this place currently has 4 stars. We went for breakfast on a Saturday. We noticed that the table next to us had a problem with getting what they ordered, but didn’t think much of it. Mistakes happen. We placed our order. After ordering, we waited perhaps 30 – 40 minutes for 2 omelettes. After a long wait, they brought out something totally different than what I had ordered. We told them what I had ordered and sent back the wrong entrée. They proceeded to bring out ANOTHER wrong order. We corrected them again. They brought out the correct order, but the omelette was not cooked through(the whites of the eggs were runny), so I didn’t end up eating it anyway. After all that, they still charged us for our full meal, including my disaster of an order. My husband got the correct thing, but it was very dry and not good. We definitely don’t recommend this place.

Eggs Benedict was very good. Hollandelaise(spelling ?) was real Hollandelaise. Don’t get the corn beef hash though. It’s more like the inside of leftover sausage.

Architecturally diner-wise lovely. But the eggs were very overdone while the toast barely warmed. Hash browns good. Bacon good. Added pie to try and entice my elderly parent to eat, and that truly was the worst pie I have experienced in a diner ever. Do not order the blueberry pie, it was really Inedible.

This place is exactly the kind of diner that will have my loyalty for all of time. Vibe: The inside of the diner is so nice– it’s clean but not overly lit or sterile feeling. The staff is always kind and casual. They treat all the new customers like regulars. There is always good music playing; I think a ‘coffee house’ type satellite station. Coffee: I have a fairly particular taste for coffee. Makris’ is delicious. I gather it is their own blend, provided by Omar Coffee, which is also in Newington so double points for going hyper local. Food: SO good. Let’s start with the pancakes. Any of the whole wheat varieties are heavenly, and I like whole wheat sparingly. The apple walnut are my favorite, my husband inhales the blueberry(I may help him). The home fries are above average, and I assume their other food is, too. I just can’t get past the pancakes and home fries.

If there was ever the perfect diner, I think Makris does a great job of fulfilling that role. Like something from yesteryear, you walk in and are immediately greeted by the very welcoming family. Draped in wall to wall stainless-steel, the rail-car façade is reminiscent of a classic diner. Plenty of stools at the counter, the booths have their own mini jukebox which is a nice touch. You won’t find one of those«everything-under-the-sun» menus here. Simple, to the point — they’re good at making breakfast and they know it. I’m a huge fan of their big breakfast specials, as you can customize it any which way. Their pancakes are great, plate-sized they come in butter milk or wheat batter. Eggs are always on point, corned-beef hash is perfectly grilled, bacon exquisitely burnt — there’s no wonder why so many people swear by this place. I never break the bank coming here, nor do I ever leave hungry. Service is nothing less than as if you were being served at home. Makris, you got my vote!

Dined for breakfast last week during the awful snow storm and was so very pleased with everything. The place is spotless, so clean and organized, while still obtaining the diner feel, which makes me very happy. Our waitress was so friendly and chipper even for the crummy weather we were having. The menu has a lot to choose from, but almost everything is served with eggs(which I only like once in a while, so this was my only complaint) and breakfast date doesn’t eat eggs. I was not terribly hungry so I went with a cup of fresh fruit and home fries. Date went with pancakes, bacon, and home fries. We were both very satiated for under $ 20. The coffee was delicious and endless, she never let my mug get empty… Ended up about 4 mugs. It was a productive day after that. This was my first visit here, but it will most likely now be in my breakfast stop rotation! Thumbs up.

Not the quickest service by any measure. Also a little pricier than other diners in the area. The food was pretty run of the mill. All in all, an underwhelming experience

So, I chose this place after reading all the reviews on here. I was disappointed big time. The hostess did not care that customers are waiting at the door. People started waiting and blocking the doorway. We get seated and then had to wait so long to get our orders placed. There was delays in even getting a coffee refill. I was very disappointed with the food as well. I ordered for scrambled eggs with bacon. I had asked the waitress to crumble the bacon along with the eggs and what i get is an omelet with crumbled bacon on the sides. My friend ordered for a side of hash, it was so over seasoned and so was the home fries. The toast also looked so dry and uninviting. We were lucky that we got served even if we had to wait for 10 – 15 minutes, there were other people who did not get attended and were ready to walk out. The only thing I liked at Makris is the coffee. Not sure if I will go back here. Disappointed.

First time I was here, during a week day, was good. Good atmosphere, quick service, and the food was fine. Who goes to diners for the food, anyways? Went on a recent Sunday morning and not only were my wife and I ignored while the wait staff walked right past us at the front door, but people who arrived after us were coming through the back door and getting seated. When I inquired about the situation, the waitress told me that it’s really up to us to get a seat. So we left.

One of my monthly indulgences, after getting the car J-lubed…drive one hundred yards or so and stop at Makris Diner for breakfast. You walk in, and it’s a classic diner out of the 50s or 60s, complete with a huge counter and over a dozen stools, all done over in shiny stainless steel… and each booth has their own personal Jukebox!!! Most of Makris menu is what you would find on any diner menu. As aiways, what makes the difference is not what you use, but how you use it. For instance, Makris has regular, Dark roast, and decaf coffees. Another difference — their pancakes. Not only are the plate-coverers, but they have buttermilk batter, OR their own signature wheat batter… a bit sweeter and more wholesome. I prefer the former, while the wife likes the latter, with blueberries. They are served hot, and are scrumptious from begining to end. Another difference — something as simple as corned beef hash. While many palces simply plop their hash from a can and heat it, at Makris, they add onions and peppers, and served it grilled on both sides. You can actually taste some of the corned beef in the hash! The waitresses are all friendly, and are not afraid to help each other out by pouring seconds on coffee, or serving another one’s food. This is how a place develops a good reputation, and lots of repeat customers. Never had lunch here so I cannot vouch for them. They do have a dry-erase board announcing daily lunch specials, so I assume they put as much effort into pleasing the lunch crowd that they do for breakfast. Smiles and full bellies… and very reasonable prices. All in all, one of our favorite breakfast stops.
