We keep buying exotic fruits from this store without ever figuring out the name. It’s in between Phở 54 and Van’s Bakery. Now we know! It’s Tay Do fresh fruits and produce! Depending on the season, we bought fresh jackfruit, fresh vietnamese mangoes, fresh longans, fresh mangosteens, fresh lychees, and today, we got FRESHRIPE wax jambu 蓮霧(Syzygium samarangense)!!! OMG, after leaving Taiwan, this is the one of many fruits I crave in the summer. Someone must be growing them here, and so far, this is the BESTLOOKINGRIPE wax jambu I have ever seen here in the US. I’m partial to the red ones. It’s very delicate fruit, the skin bruises easily so many places like 99 Ranch or other markets don’t carry ripe ones(I’ve seen plenty of unripe ones!) When you cut it open vertically, it’s got a crispy & spongy interior, texture kind of like watermelon, and it tastes like eating orange flower fragranced water. It’s very little sugar, a hint of sour, and considered an alkaline fruit. We eat it to keep cool and hydrated in the summer, and Mom used to cook it in a little water and rock sugar when I have coughs w/phlegm. It’s not cheap, $ 7.00 a pound. We bought the whole branch and they weighed it, and it turned out to be $ 18.00. Yay !!! Cash only ! I’m not sure about the business hours, but I’m assuming Mon-Sun 9−5pm.
