Otterbein is a small historic graveyard located right behind Hannah Mayne park on Knox St in old Westerville. It has been in use since the early 1800s and is the final resting place of Benjamin Hanby, a 1858 grad of Otterbein College and also a songwriter. «Darling Nellie Gray» and«Up on the Housetop» a popular holiday tune. Several Hanby family members are also buried here. The Hanby family were known for their abolishionist politics during the civil war. The mausoleum is rumored to be haunted, people have seen apparitions walking in ravine behind it and in the yard. This yard is very atmospheric and in the half-light of dusk, downright creeeeepy, muhwahahahahah… During the day this is a very picturesque graveyard, well manicured and well treed. This is where I want to be planted«when the time comes.» I love the character of this yard even if I can hear…“they’re coming to get you Barbara” as the sun starts to dip below the horizon. Maybe I’ve been watching too many horror shows or maybe, just maybe, I’m creepy like that! :D
