The Kani Salad is perfect. The dressing is exquisite. The sushi is served simple(the chef specials with the extra toppings aren’t missed) spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, octopus, eel, salmon and they’re super fresh! Their spicy mayo is definitely a must try. This place is easy a sushi lovers dream.

Small, homey restaurant with the best service ever. The woman that is always serving treats all of the customers like family, and the service is great for both eat in and take out. Their tempura is amazing(I’ve had chicken, shrimp and vegetables) and their sushi rolls are great. Best sushi place in the area.

Good quality for the price. It’s fairly simple sushi, nothing elaborate but they do it well. The owners are the cook and server. Super sweet and great service. They won a lot of points with me when I ordered a standard side salad, and the owner came back out saying the lettuce wasn’t up to her standard so she wanted me to have soup instead. I can really respect that. She also remembered my boyfriend’s order from a month ago. The owners make you feel like you’re at your grandmas and they’re serving you sushi tonight!

Makes you feel at home. Excellent hot dishes, try the chicken negamki. The salad dressing is homemade and amazing, I love the veggie dumplings. The owner is crazy funny walks around talking to everyone

My daughter and I came last Saturday… when we walked in I was taken back by the size of this place very small… I thought okay this place is quite cozy… too cozy!!! To me the prices are a lil high and the food isn’t the best quality!!! Their original chef was out so the owner was preparing the sushi!!! My hand roll fell apart immediately and the spicy Kani salad was okay but I loved the dressing!!! To me the food is mediocre and if I do return it due to the owners wife Yoca… the most sweetest lady… she really make you feel at home.

The sushi is extremely fresh. All employees are so kind. Not for fancy, sauced up gourmet rolls but I’d choose fresh made sushi over fancy rolls any day. I’ve been to enough sushi restaurants that have delicious sauces & crunches that distracts the not-fresh fish. Also, shogi doesn’t bloat me but satisfies my hunger.

Went here on a Saturday Night w/party of 9 for the hibachi to celebrate mothers birthday(Senior Citizen). The good: Polite staff, good atmosphere and great for a big group The Bad: Food Average, All the Hibachi Chefs were nice but seemed to be going through the motions. I expected more interaction and show like other places. The bill was over $ 400 which was a good price but I was asking to comp a small dessert for B’Day and the wouldn’t budge. Wound up paying for a dessert for our special occasion. I’ll try somewhere eles next time

sushi places a dime a dozen here on Long Island BUT Shogi is a gem among them a shining star a 5 star wonder all because of Yuko she is the owner/waitress/your friend/your mom and I love her! this is a small place sushi bar right in front so you can see the chef at work at every visit Yuko is wearing an apron, I don’t know why but I find it very comforting. lovely fresh simple sushi simple menu for a sushi lover I asked about a certain fish and Yuko asked the chef for a slice for me to try beautiful and fresh I can not believe how much I love this place and Yuko I have been going here for a few years and will come back again and again

I’m not going to pretend that Shogi is «the best» ever Japanese restaurant, especially since the more impressive establishments I’ve eaten at are so much more expensive. Shogi offers delicious and authentic Japanese food at reasonable prices. It’s a family run establishment that’s casual and homey. Anyone who is familiar with Japanese home cooking, or is interested in enjoying a great Japanese meal should pay Shogi a visit. Note: I’m actually writing because the negative reviews are not only absurd and over the top(one even complains about the water), a couple of them(suspiciously) recommend a completing Japanese restaurant, which leaves me wondering if the reviewers actually visited Shogi or if they’re just shills.

one of my favorite things is to walk into a sushi bar, sit at a table and the sushi chef just starts to prepare my ‘usual.’ This is what you get at Shogi. The customers know eachother, the owner Yuko runs the show, in her slippers and boxers and apron. She greets new customers with the same warmth as regulars. The menu is kinda difficult to understand, I’m not even sure they have them, but just tell her what you want or listen to her suggestions, she won’t steer you wrong. Louie prepares my roll and serves it up with a smile, knowing I like a little extra this a little less that.. Also — the BEST ginger dressing.

Nothing Special. It was close to my school and convenient. The lady said something about charging different prices during the day than at evening on your credit card. sounded fishy… The food was not memorable.

Shogi is what you wish every other japanese restaurant was. Small, very well run, intimate, with great food. This is not a sushi factory. This is a place where the owner(Yuko) knows you by name, treats you like her family and serves you amazing food. Her walls are a shrine from the hundreds of regular customers that send christmas cards and whos kids color ‘portraits’ of Yuko because they love her so much. Located right next to Joann Fabric in westbury in a little strip shopping center. She’s been there for 24 years(tells you something!) Ok, the food. The sushi is fresh, well made and reasonably priced. Things you absolutely must try other than the sushi are: 1) anything with the ginger salad dressing, it is like crack. Get a side salad with the dressing on the side so you can dip other things in it. She’s used it it! So, so good. 2) The fried squid(like calamari), dipped in the aforementioned ginger crack-sauce 3) The beef negima(appetizer size is usually enough for us, it’s pretty heavy). We moved from long island to san francisco and only get to visit when we come back a couple of times a year. Say hi to Yuko for us(tell her the couple that moved to SF misses her!) protip: call before you go over to make sure they are open, she has strange hours some days and only opens at 430 or 5pm even on the weekends.

Like Arjan S, I have been somewhat of a regular at Shogi, which has been around for over twenty years. While Shogi may not be the best Japanese restaurant, it is certainly a reliable neighborhood spot for sushi and japanese food. When you first enter Shogi, you will find it to have a clean, homey, and hole in the wall kind of ambience with various pictures on the wall in the back and Japanese style lanterns hanging over the tables. The tables are somewhat close together, so you will hear other patrons conversations. Their sushi, while not the best I have ever had, is fresh and will satisfy your sushi craving. I like their Salmon Skin Roll, which is nicely sized and filled with crispy, broiled salmon skin. If you would like a cooked meal, I like their Chicken Teriyaki, which is broiled and juicy chicken in a sweet and salty sauce with fresh vegetables. Another favorite of mine is their Ikamaru, which is broiled squid served tentacles and all and is slightly sweet and tender in a sweetish soy sauce with a bite of ginger. Hot and soothing Miso soup and a pedestrain Iceburg salad with a tangy ginger dressing are nice ways to accompany your meal. In addition, Yoko San, the owner and hostess, is very friendly, if not a bit boisterous and will remember you with every visit. Louie, the sushi chef and the waitresses also treat you well. Also, while the prices have gone up slightly over the years, Shogi is still a good value as the portions are relatively large and you are given enough food, such as with the Chicken Teriyaki, that you will have enough for two meals. While Shogi may not be the best Japanese food and sushi around, it is a decent place to satisfy your Japanese food and/or sushi craving.

Went to this place last night after shopping at century 21, and I must say that this was by far the WORST Sushi restaurant I have ever been to. The woman who greets you, was unkempt, wearing mens boxers as she lumbered around everyones tables as if she was some sort of tyrant. As for the food, I ordered the star roll, and it was completely nasty, as well as the taco roll. There was no creativity to the roll, with verybland taste. A few hours later and my stomach is still churning, I brought a relative from overseas here and I am completely embarassed. Next time I should pay a little more and go to kotobuki in rosylyn heights…

Love this place! Amazing that it’s been open for 25yrs with no advertisement, just pure word of mouth! That alone should say alot, but Yuko the owner is super sweet n very attentive. She will remember you even remember what you like to eat. I’ve been going there for the past 2 years and have never been dissapointed. Love the spicy kani salad and the spicy salmon skin roll with skin topping a must try.

It’s the service that I love the most! The staff and owner are warm and attentive. I love the veggie sushi although their side salad is essentially iceberg lettuce with dressing. I’m happy every time I go there — definitely recommended!
