I love an excuse to explore the industrial side of West Sacramento. It’s even more satisfying than combing through a hardware store for that hard-​to-​find item for a home improvement project. I was on a mission to get an important piece of research equipment on-​line, and Sac-​Val supplied the crucial missing ingredient: ethylene glycol.
This was all in the quest to set up an instrument that prints «spots» like an inkjet printer would, except the printing surface is glass (microscope slides) and the ink is either DNA or protein. I was assigned the unseemly task of hooking up just such a «Spot-​Botter» for my boss, even though I had no experience with the machine. We wanted to print with protein (which is more labile than DNA), which meant the printing environment needed to be chilled. A 50:50 mixture of ethylene glycol to water was recommended for filling the attached recirculating water bath.
After much searching on-​line, I sleuthed out that Sac-​Val could set me up with a single gallon of ethylene glycol. I made the drive to West Sac, will-​called the chemical, and got my spot-​printing robot all chillied on down for some righteous protein printing. Sac-​Val, this misfit of science thanks you… and salutes you for your extensive inventory of fine specialty products. Now if I ever need a gross of toilet seat covers, I’ll be back!
