Try the Shepherd’s Pie… it is fantastic! We keep going back just for that. The first time I went to RJ’s, the service was great. The server was a very personable woman who joked with us repeatedly. Ever since then, the service has been okay… not great, but okay. Only once has the service not been good at all(waiting forever to get my drink, having to ask three time for something, etc). I am taking away one star for that horrible service. Otherwise, the place is great. Very homey and the food is good and the beers are cold!

There are three bar/grill type places in West Newton Square. Paddy’s, Crowley’s, and Cherry Tree. Paddy’s has the best food but can get very crowded and isn’t open on Sundays in the summer. Cherry Tree has cheap food during Red Sox games and pitchers of beer. Crowley’s has decent food — not great, but good. You’re better off sticking with the sandwiches and pub stuff. I haven’t had great experiences with the pasta. Awesome mashed potatoes, though. They have acoustic music there some nights, and a huge back room which is great for parties. The people who work there(including the owner, RJ Crowley himself!) are generally extremely friendly and accomodating. We’ve gone there on a weeknight with friends and played board games in the back room after ordering beer and dinner. It’s a good time.

went here on a fluke after an open house, with my Realtor to sign papers and officially put in an offer. We were pleasantly surprised when we had amazing food, a super sweet server, and the bill was el cheap-o! great for vegetarians and carnivores. way better than we would have expected for pub food.

This place is just ok. I went here on Friday night after another newton bar that I was at closed for the evening. They had a decent musician playing and people were generally friendly. I am giving 2 stars because it appeared that the owner let his dog out about a half hour before closing time and let him have the run of the place. I love animals as much as the next person, but it seemed off to me to have a dog running around behind the bar(I mean the ice bins are low and uncovered — dog hair in your drink! Yuck!) I guess since I also work in foodservice, it grosses me out. EDIT4÷2÷07 I’m changing this to a three star from a two star b/c I have been to this place since the doggie experience. It was good enough to merit another star and I’ll be back :)

Cool atmosphere but that was about it. I went there last night and was not impressed. Granted it’s a bar, so my expectations weren’t high to begin with, but the food was not so good. We started with a plate of nachos. The nachos were burnt on the edges and there was too little salsa for the amount of nachos you get. I followed that with some Greek Salad, which was standard. I also tried the wings. Gross! I asked for them extra crispy, which was fine, but most wings I’ve eaten have sauce on them. These wings practically were naked! There was a slight drizzle of sauce, so we asked for extra wing sauce which helped. The waitress was nice enough, but I think she had a pretty long day as she kept forgetting who ordered what and didn’t clear plates enough. Atmosphere is cool, but other than that, not really worth it(to me) to go back.

One of two establishments on Washington Street in West Newton that stays open past 10:00pm on a weeknight(or weekend night for that matter)! Average American cuisine that is reasonably priced. This Bar ‘s real strength is its extremely friendly bartenders who will remember your face after a few visits. Stop by for a drink on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night you will be greeted by an interesting mix of 20 something’s and 40⁄50 something’s. Definitely a good time if you’re into a chill night in the burbs.
