Rubia

Sarah Paulus has been doing my hair for years and I have followed her from salon to salon. Let’s just say I couldn’t be happier she ended up at Rubia! Every stylist that works there is so sweet and extremely talented at their craft. Sarah is so amazing at listening to what I want and she always makes me feel so beautiful when I walk out. She has shown me products to use and techniques to try to get my hair healthy and I couldn’t be more impressed. I love that I can get waxed by Nancy while I process, too. She is the BEST at sculpting brows! You won’t be disappointed no matter what chair you sit in at Rubia.

If you’re looking for a positive experience every time you go to the salon then this is your place. Amy does such a great job with the cut, color, and ambiance. She actually listens to what you want and delivers every single time. I’ve become so spoiled that I can’t imagine going anywhere else.

Amy (owner) is wonderful! I’ve been going to her for a year or two based on a recommendation from a friend who has always had gorgeous hair. I get a basic cut/​color and always leave happy. She’s super sweet and all the other stylists there seem great too. The salon itself is very nice – bright, open, upscale, clean, cute décor – and is located in lovely downtown West Linn right off 205. I love the natural products she uses and has recommended (Loma & Davines), and have also picked up a number of little hair care tricks from her. She is prompt & flexible when you call to schedule, and I’ve never had to wait more than a few minutes past my appt time. I wholeheartedly recommend Rubia!

I love Kristen! She has been my stylist for 8 years. I have never been more happy with my hair! She always has new and creative ideas for my cut and color.

I am so happy to have found «my place» so soon after moving to Portland. Because of Unilocal,I thought I’d give this little salon a try, and man it blew me away. Not only is it simply adorable (I want the wallpaper and décor in my apartment stat), but the stylists are all cheerful and welcoming as well as amazing at what they do! Both appointments with Sarah Monego left me feeling confident and about 100% better about my hair. I’ve had other stylists struggle with giving me the short haircut of my dreams, due to the fact that it is THICK and there is a lot of it. Sarah has it down! I also love that she isn’t afraid to ask questions before she begins, as well as give her thoughts. A little trust goes a long way. Thank you Rubia, you’ll be seeing me again… and again… and again :)

Cute shop in the old part of downtown. Kristen is my hair goddess. I’ve always got great color and styles. I have naturally dishwater blond hair and have tried color from dark dark brown to platinum and everytime she nails it. Last time we tried a Brazilan blowout and it was AMAZING. I’m addicted! My cuts are pretty basic — I’m in my fifities so I don’t go to wild but somehow they always look great on me. She is always very nice and professional. It seems she is going to different classes to keep up her skills and be at the forefront of the new trends and products. My husband even goes to her because she gives him the best high and tight cuts around (cop cut). Thank you Kristen!!!

Well I gave Kristen another chance. I even took her photos of what I had in mind. I wanted my hair color changed and a simple long layered haircut. What I got was a haircut so over texturized that she left me with frizzy slithery looking ends and after the bleachwash (so the color would supposedly take better) my hair was pretty much ruined. What do you do when you just know it’s going all wrong and you’re in the middle of the process?! I just sat there hoping for the best. Not one person has complimented my hair either! My husband said it looked like a frizzy mess and that it looked liked something you’d expect from a beauty school student. Now I know that this sounds harsh, but you have to understand that I am 48 and grew up around hair stylists my entire life. I’ve had so many different styles that I can not even remember them all. I’ve had my hair colored about every color and never EVER has anyone done a bleach mixed with shampoo wash to «get it right”~ NEVER. She said that it would not hurt my hair. I reminded her that under the brown was high lighted hair and still she did the shampoo bleach thing and I am convinced that it was mostly what ruined my hair. Totally dried it out and changed the way it felt and after the over texturing it was a frizzy mess. So I got my hair a rescue haircut taking off 8 inches and the hair stylist said there wash just nothing but fuzz left on the sides; GEE YA THINK?! Fortunately I like short hair, but how could I NOT say anything about this experience? Beware of the bleachwash and bad haircuts. I once had lovely thick naturally wavy hair past my shoulders. Cost me close to $ 400 and it was wrecked after just two trips to this stylist!

I followed Kristen H over to Rubia. I would pretty much follow Kristen anywhere — she’s the only one I trust with my hair.
(Previous review on Kristen: Not only is she amazing at doing what you ask her to do she is three times that amazing when you ask her for ideas. I can’t count the number of times I’ve asked Kristen to «just do something fun» and she has produced the trendiest/​fun looks ever. On occasion I’ve made the mistake of DIY, going too long between cuts or having someone else play with my hair. Kristen has fixed the most appalling of experiments to the point that people ask me where I got my hair done because they want the same thing… Kristen is THAT amazing. Additionally, once my hair was fried so bad I asked her to cut off too inches. She re-​colored it, deep conditioned it and cut off maybe a centimeter, if that. She was somehow able to fix the fried ends almost completely. Incredible. Don’t go to anyone else. I would follow Kristen anywhere.)
But I also wanted to review this salon. The salon itself is quaint and pleasant. I like the color scheme and décor a lot. I also like how it feels very relaxed but somehow also very trendy. I appreciate the prodcuts they promote; namely Davine’s and Morrocan Oil. Those happen to be my favorites so I am happy they are readily available. I guess if I had to come up with something to complain about… it would be the set up of the chairs and maybe the wash area. I kind of wish that everyone was a little closer — I heard people chatting on the other side of the salon and I thought it would be fun to chat too. Although, it was fun to just talk to my hair stylist. The hair wash chair is just a normal hair wash chair — so this isn’t actually a complaint, but it would be fun to be in a more comfortable chair. Again, those really aren’t complaints, I suppose, they’re more like observations.
They had a nice tea/​water area. Not sure if they serve anything else.
Anyway, I really enjoyed my experience at Rubia. Everyone seemed super friendly. Of course, I’ll be returning.

Just had my hair done by Amy and can I just say… A-​M-​A-​Z-​I-​N-​G!,
My hair was a long hot mess and she worked her magic hands on me, and in a short hour and a half, I walked out with the BEST Cut/​Color I have ever had! Thank You Amy! See you in 8 weeks!

I have long hair and constantly wear it up. I was getting tired of the maintenance for it and wanted to go with a short cut instead. Being semi-​new to the area, it was time for me to find a new hair stylist. Today, I had an appointment with Amy, the owner, and believe she deserves A LOT of praise!
Amy is extremely down-​to-​earth, sweet and personable. I showed her two pictures to give her an idea of what I was looking for and she did an amazing job layering my hair just right to give it some body and personality. When I left today, I stopped by a few places to get some food/​groceries and received two compliments. One of the compliments came from someone who has only seen me once before with my hair up. I was overjoyed when she came up to me and asked if I changed my hair because it is really cute. The second compliment came from someone who sees me often but has never seen my hair down. She said she did a double take when she saw me! I was ecstatic to have two compliments within the first hour and a half of having it done! :D
I chose this salon because of the great reviews and wanted to come back and report that I was beyond impressed with the whole experience. She is extremely talented, has a wonderful personality and completely exceeded my expectations for a short hair style! Thank you, thank you!

I have thick, curly hair that is difficult to cut and style. I actually dread going to get it cut because a bad stylist will make it look really goofy. On a recommendation from a friend I went to Rubia and Amy did a great job taming my mane. Not too short and with a good shape that is looking better as the weeks go by. All I say is thanks!

The place is a litle hard to find, tucked away on the end of the Willamette Falls strip. Probably why I had passed it up before. But don’t let the outside fool you, it’s cute and modern inside.
Amy, the owner, is super sweet and gave me a great cut. A few weeks later and it’s still going strong. I’ve tried Blush nearby and I’d definitely recommend Rubia over them.

My favorite place ever and today was only my first time. The shop has a whimisical and classic feel. Heather did my hair, color, and I have never been happier. Going blonder is dangerous, but my new color is natural looking, well blended and it still feels great. Not like straw at all! I met the owner too and she was very sweet. Pricier than most places I have been too, but thats not saying much. I tend to be cheap. :)
