FÜMA Salon on Melrose Hair Lounge

I came to this salon because it had 5 stars and Hank had amazing reviews. I live in SD, so I was trying to find a nice place since I couldn’t go to my original girl.
The salon is very minimalistic and clean and located right on Melrose. Parking isn’t hard to find. The girl at the front desk with the short hair and the tattoo seemed to have a little attitude, but I didn’t take it personally.
I came in to dye my hair dark, chocolate brown from highlighted ash brown to make it look more natural for a pageant. I told Hank I didn’t want black hair at all because it didn’t suit me and he agreed it was too much. When he finished my hair was not what I asked for at all. He said it would lighten eventually, but it was VERY, VERY black. Not like a natural looking black hair on Asians, but obvious black with barely any brown that I asked for. I was never one of those girls that fussed over their hair (because it’s just hair) but I definitely felt mortified after and I just sat in my car for a few minutes after paying lol.
Hank was very sweet and I have no doubt he’s very talented! I tipped him still because he still took his time, but I was extremely unsatisfied. This honestly looked like something I could do at home with box dye. I’m not an insecure person, but I was feeling very self-​conscious about my appearance and people have been telling me I looked better with my old hair. I just felt like I wasted my money unfortunately. Tomorrow my friend and I are actually planning on fixing it with box dye (bad idea maybe, but I can’t stand my hair right now). I know hair is just hair and it grows and I can dye it back, but… I had high hopes for this place and was bummed.

Staffs at this salon are very friendly. Their online booking system is so convenient and quite exact, so you will not waste your valuable time waiting on your turn. They seem to understand the overall experience of a customer is as important as the result of their work.
I see Keitaro for my hair. He listens carefully, making sure he understands exactly what I want before shampooing. Someone genuinely caring about customers has been something rare in this snobby town (despite the fact that you’re giving them money in exchange!), but you’ll be glad you spend $$ at this salon just like I did. I’m looking forward to going back!

I got a haircut and blowout here a couple months ago because my friend recommended it and I liked her picture when I saw it. I wasn’t really sure what I wanted coming in but the hair was cut shorter than I wanted and the layers weren’t very pronounced. The blowout was good though (although the curls made my hair look even shorter…).

First time going here, got my hair cut and balayage done with Keitaro. He was awesome! If you are looking for a professional hairstylist, you should go see him because he is the bestt

LOVE! This place. I went from my natural ashy medium brown to a reddish auburn in October, but wasn’t satisfied at my previous salon after she went too dark and my root touch up didn’t match my color. I’ve been going to Julie Daniel at FÜMA since February and I think I’ve finally found my hair person! Julie is super easy to talk to (usually it seems forced or I just browse my phone) and she’s super talented. She keeps notes of what she did last time to your hair so she makes sure she gets the color right each time. I asked for someone who was experienced with reds, and I was assigned her. I was looking for a specific and odd kind of red, and she got it right on her first try! I’ve went to her for one touch up since and I have another scheduled coming up, along with a keratin treatment (super excited for that!). You honestly CANT beat FÜMA’s prices and expertise, especially in their location. I don’t even have to pay extra to get my eyebrows dyed or a «long hair charge» I’ve encountered at many other salons.
Their other staff is great too! Always checking to see if you need more coffee or water. Super sweet and very relaxed atmosphere. Parking is street and only lasts an hour and a half. Because of that I usually über there. Love, love, love!

There are so many salons in LA. I’ve been to quite a few of them– Beverly Hills, We Ho, Santa Monica even a couple in the Valley. There is nowhere better than FUMA. From the doorway to the shampoo sink I haven’t had a smoother, cooler experience in any salon ever. It all starts at the top and Keitaro is an Ace owner and a highly skilled stylist/​colorist. Julie Daniel is a master of her trade and Erika Warren is a gem. You really cannot go wrong here with anyone. Also, the front desk is magic and will do whatever they can to accommodate you. Somehow they were able to get me in at 8PM one night– this is not the norm but they take care of you here without ANY of that LA Salon attitude while STILL killing it with the craft. I am so grateful I found FUMA and I guarantee you will be too.

I’ve had some pretty terrible experiences when it comes to getting color done, and have hard time trusting people to do the right job, but I was blown away by the service at FUMA. Erica did a beautiful job cutting and coloring my hair, and even took me from Brunette to Blonde in two sessions. The staff is super friendly, and salon has a very upbeat vibe!

Highly recommend this salon. Ask for Keitaro if you’re a blonde he will look after you 120%. Beautiful creamy blonde colors are his specialty!

I’ll keep this short and sweet.
I’ve got long, curly, hair and wear it naturally curly more often than I don’t. Keitaro gave me an AMAZING cut. Looks good straight or natural. i’m LOVING my hair and I usually have more of a love/​hate relationship with it. I can’t wait to go back.
Plus $ 85 for a cut at a place on Melrose is a deal, in my opinion (I paid the same when I was driving all the way to the valley for a less than good cut).

So I always like to wait till I get at least 2 times to a place before I leave a review! And I absolutely LOVE Fuma Salon! The entire staff is extremely nice and super welcoming! I personally go to Hank and I’ve never trusted a hair dresser the way I trust him! Everything he’s done to my hair I’ve walked out satisfied and happy! I get stopped on the street all the time about my colors and cuts! I highly highly recommend this place and specifically Hank!

There’s always a point, mid-​haircut, when I regret getting a haircut. Yes, my hair is scraggly, but it’s MINE. And now it’s on the floor & I need to spend months trying to make it long again…
I said: not too much length off, please, and I’d love to experiment with sideswept bangs.
Erika trimmed off a few inches without losing too much length, then cut sideswept bangs.

She has been my hairstylist ever since I moved to LA, which was 2 years ago. We connected the first time we meet and it’s like we have been friends for years and years. My first hair color experience since moving to LA — phenomenal! I had Frank, who apparently like me, is from the East Coast. :-)
He suggested I try out the Ombré bronde look which ended up amazing. The staff are friendly as well. A very nice calm environment with decent pricing for the area. Highly recommend!

It has been about a month since I got my haircut here at Fuma. I haven’t had any time to review this place, but I feel like I should express how happy I am with my new do. I made an appointment here with Lisa because her profile really lured me. I’m the kind of person who does absolutely nothing with my hair, except for a simple pulled back pony tail. I needed some sort of change, something different, something that was low maintenance, and SHORT.
From the moment I walked in to Fuma, I was impressed. Quick service, polite, and very comfortable. I met Lisa and she was wonderful. She listened to my indecisive thoughts and really led me to what I wanted. My hair was long, I mean really really long, and she asked if I would like to donate my hair, I was like why not. I did a good deed for wigs for kids and I got what I wanted. She was very easy to talk to and very concentrated. The final cut was different, but a breath of fresh hair. I felt so much lighter and happy!!!
Overall, Loved the cut from Lisa!!! I seriously made a great decision to come here because I usually come out unsatisfied with a new do. I can’t wait for my hair to grow so I can come back. On the plus side, bought the Unilocal deal and it was an awesome deal!

I’ve been coming here about 6 months now and I’m still completely thrilled with the services. I decided, after much deliberation, to cut some significant length off my hair — over 4 inches! I’ve had the same hair with slight variations (layers and bangs) for close to a decade, so I was well overdue.
I love the cut and have received dozens of compliments. Even my BF who really didn’t want me to cut my long hair loves it. It’s a great way to head into summer with something so much easier to take care of. Keitaro is truly gifted. The cut itself is detailed perfection and he doesn’t miss anything. LOVE IT!

I think I found my salon! It’s close to where I live, where I work, parking isn’t a complete nightmare, and the price is decent. Well, it’s expensive, but it’s Los Angeles… you gotta pay for quality.
I got my hair done in two visits. First, I got it cut by Lisa on Saturday (same day that I called by the way), and woof! An hour later, I’m sitting on the FUMA salon chair getting my hair did. I looove short hair. No fuss, no mess. Shorter hair for the summer is always more fun if you ask me. My hair has been growing out really well too… it’s been a few months already, and I still don’t have any split ends!
My second visit was the following day with Hank for color. He came highly recommended in the Unilocal reviews that I read. My thoughts? He’s more than good, he’s awesome! He doesn’t pressure me to do anything, and he’s honest without being pushy. A huge issue I usually get with coloring stylists is that they always dry out my hair hardcore. However, this time around, I was amazed to find my hair perfectly healthy. Seriously, it looks great… and it’s so soft.
Not to mention, the hair products they use here are fantastic. Hank gave me some shampoo/​conditioning/​styling samples before I left, and I ended up buying the Neuma soothing crème on my own afterwards because I loved it so much.
Anyways…I’m planning on coming back in soon to touch up my roots. Platinum blonde, please!
