Thomas Gallaudet and Alice Cogswell Statue

I am being biased because I graduated from there. LOL That statue is one of my favorites. Again, thank you for posting these pictures. People need to learn about the deaf and all.

The Cogswell name is well known in the Hartford area (Cogswell Street, Cogswell Building). Now I know why.
This monument is located on the campus of the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford. It memorializes Thomas Gallaudet. He was a teacher of the deaf and founded the first American school for the deaf in America; in Hartford in 1817. The statue shows Gallaudet with his first student, none other than Alice Cogswell.
The statue shows both Galaudet and Cogswell signing the letter «A».
There are inscriptions on all four sides of the base.
The front of the base reads:

TEACHER
BENEFACTOR
One side reads:
THOMAS HOPKINS GALLAUDET, LL. D.
BORN IN PHILADELPHIA, DECEMBER 10, 1787
FOUNDED
AT HARTFORD THE FIRST SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
IN AMERICA 1817
DIED AT HARTFORD, SEPTEMBER 10, 1851
One side gives a brief history of the statue and reads:
THIS REPLICA ERECTED BY NATIONAL ASSOCIATION
OF THE DEAF 1925
TO REPLACE MONUMENT ERECTED IN 1854 ON ORIGINAL
SITE OF THE FIRST AMERICAN SCHOOL
The last side lists the committee members.
It’s a lovely statue located in a prominent place right in front of the main building. The back of the statue looms in front of you as you drive up the long entrance from Main Street. As you exit the building, this powerful statue is right in front of you.
It really is quite moving to learn about this great humanitarian and civil rights pioneer. Our country’s history is full of quiet heroes, it’s nice to see these two get their due.
