It takes a lot to find someone new and actually trust them with your hair. After reviewing a few places I chose this place. And I’m glad I did! Carmen is great I’m glad I met her. She listened to what I wanted and gave me what I asked for. She didn’t do like most places and want to cut half your hair off. I would deff recommend this place !

I’ve been going to this salon for about a year, and this is the best service I’ve ever had by Sophie. I have been getting extensions done by Sophie, she is quick with them, reliable and very easy to get along with, so it’s not awkward sitting chatting with her while getting my hair done. I would definitely recommend going to this salon and getting anything done by Sophie. She is really good and really awesome!

I read on a curly haired website that Mark at Moda Rey knows what he’s doing when it comes to curly hair, and it’s true! I told him I just wanted to give form to my shoulder length 3A curly hair that had lately grown into a triangle-​shape. He being a curly haired guy himself, understood what needed to be done.
A quick wash and a few questions about style and he went to work, cutting and fluffing and razoring bits away (I’m aware some curl sites warn people away from razoring, but it’s fine with me because I’ve had great haircuts where the stylist used the technique, so I’m cool with it. But if you’re leery of razors, you may want to mention it). Behind me, two fluffy old doggies slept on the floor in the sun and Mark worked quickly but carefully, chatting a little but not too much, which I *really* appreciated. It was a very calm, professional vibe.
He twirled some of my curls with product and scooted me under the heater, and after I cooked for about 20, fluffed my hair out a little bit and just like that I was done. It’s a great cut, it looks good, he preserved the length I wanted and I can tell it’s going to grow out nicely. Very nice experience, I’ll be happy to go back.

Sophie is the best! After a sub-​par stylist messed up my color (BIG TIME), I went to Sophie to have it fixed. The color I wanted was bright red and the other salon gave me brown, which is basically the opposite of what I asked for. Sophie went above and beyond, stripping out the color as much as possible and then going over it with a gorgeous and super vibrant orangey red. She also had the idea to put in some copper highlights to add dimension. The highlights make a huge difference and look beautiful. Sophie isn’t just great with color. She gives amazing haircuts. She even got my bangs right when pretty much anyone else messes them up and cuts them too short and blunt. Nearly everyone I know goes to Sophie to get their hair done and now I know why! Thanks Sophie :)

The first cut I had was great, but the next two have been increasingly disappointing.

I came to Unilocal looking for guidance in finding a new stylist, and didn’t really expect to find much help. Because really, everyone’s stylist is «the best», right? And I like edgy, artsy hair, and don’t easily trust just any stylist to execute the kind of look I’m going for. I’m extremely selective when it comes to who I will allow to cut my hair.
But, I was pleasantly surprised to see other Unilocalers comment on Sophie’s artistic sensibilities and fashion-​forward approach to hair, and decided to make an appointment with her at Moda Rey. These comments were totally on point! With Sophie’s art and fashion design background, she was a perfect match for me and cut my bleached platinum hair into a very stylish asymmetrical style.
I absolutely love the cut and have gotten so many compliments. My boyfriend wants to call Sophie and thank her for keeping me cute. She also knows lots of natural remedies for all kinds of hair woes (currently, mine is attempting to grow my hair while repeatedly damaging it with bleach).
$ 50 for the cut and worth every cent. Highly recommended!

Moda Rey is an excellent salon, and Kim is a wonderful stylist. She took her time and really paid close attention to what I was going for and took great care with a few difficult areas. I’m normally indifferent after a haircut but this time I was extremely pleased. I’ll absolutely be coming back here.

I have been going to Sophie for over 4 years (every 5 – 7 weeks). if you are looking for something artistic and cool, she’s your stylist. i have sent many friends w/​all different lengths and textures and they are always pleased. I often get compliments from other stylists.
Cut and Color = $ 95

I went in a while ago (just writing review) and told the lady (never even told me her name) that I was scared to go to a new salon. i had moved here 2 years prior and had never been to anyone else… I have superfine curly hair and warned her of that. She did nothing to calm my fears and just cut it and let me go. That is not the salon experience I am used to. Service — mediocre, and haircut same. Never went back

Got a good hair cut from Sophie, it was my first time here thought I would try something other then cost cutters.

A Unilocaler recommended me this place when I was looking for hair stylist to cut Asian hair texture. I was more than glad. Sophie is an Asian (HK) and yes, she knows how to cut Asian hair. My SIL and I went together. I had a hair cut and she had a trim of her bangs. We were both happy customers at the end of the session. It is not easy to find hairstylists who can cut Asian hair in Hartford. we are just so glad we found one.
Ladies Hair cut $ 40 and Bangs about $ 5 – 10.

Three years ago I never thought I would be a $ 40 haircut man but Mark at Moda Rey converted me. He has a passion for men’s hair. He’s great at keeping me professional looking, though I long for the day when I can let him experiment. Don’t let the strip mall exterior fool you. You’ll want to book in advance.
