We came here for weeknight happy hour and were pretty impressed. The sushi came out well-made despite the affordable happy hour prices — I liked seeing a lot of fish and not a lot of rice, definitely didn’t cut corners here. And I would never complain about Sapporo for a few bucks.

WOO love KOMA! the hibachi show is amazing and the guys are usually funny and nice so don’t get nervous. I love the rice they make there, its so good, honestly, to me the rice is better than the others things they make. LOVEIT totally recommend it even if its a little expensive for teens

It was my birthday and also a busy week starting off the summer. We are getting the interior of our house painted, swim team, end of soccer, etc. So I was NOT feeling like going out, crowds, dressing up, or any of that. Instead I decided to try this restaurant I had a take out menu for delivery that was fairly new to West Hartford, Koma. It is located near Noodles & Co. I called and asked if they deliver to my area. They said it’s a little over their limit but yes, they would deliver to me. First plus. I call back and order hibachi kids’ meals and several sushi rolls for myself. They said it would be 45 minutes(Friday night and I could hear the phone ringing in the background) but it arrived in about 30, I was surprised. Second plus. The packaging was clean, classy and everything intact. The kids’ got miso soup with their meals and it arrived hot and unspilled. My rolls arrived fresh, still cool, and oh so yummy! I ordered the Dynamite, the Sweetheart, the Spicy Scallop, and the California Roll. I liked the Spicy Scallop and the Sweetheart the best. Crispy, just a hint of heat, but very flavorful. The kids really enjoyed the rice in their hibachi dishes, they said very tasty. I also got an order of Gyoza, which was seasoned well and still had some sear on it. All in all, we were overly pleased with the delivery and look forward to another meal from Koma! Definitely not fast food Japanese!

Beautiful décor but it almost feels too big, almost night club-y. I came with a friend and we started with the summer roll. The roll was great, the sauce was too thin and watery. Nice sweet taste. I ordered the shrimp tempura, avocado and cucumber roll with a side of noodles. Everything tasted fine but I just felt like it was missing a wow factor. It was very filling though, I couldn’t finish all of my rolls which is a first for me ever. Service started off strong and got slow… We had a groupon and didn’t realize we had to spend $ 50 before tax. Our bill was $ 47 so we had to either eat the $ 3 or come again. We decided to eat the extra $ 3. This place was good for groups especially for hibachi but I don’t know if I would come back.

I’ve been here once, and I am a fan. I don’t know if I just like the décor, or am actually a fan, but regardless, I am a promoter for now. My friends and I went here for sushi. It was my first time here, and I was very impressed by the décor. It looks very trendy and high end. They have a hibachi area up front, and a regular seating area in the back. This place is HUGE. You’re able to order hibachi without sitting at the hibachi area, but you miss the experience by doing that. The food was good. My sushi was delicious and tasted fresh. Everyone I cam with liked what they got, and was overall satisfied. They have a lot of cool cocktails, albeit a little pricey. Service was also ok – not memorable for being horrible or fantastic.

Koma’s got a really interesting and unusual vibe for a Japanese place on the east coast. It has muted lighting, metallic accents, and dark, intense colors that you would expect to find in a night club in LA… but in stead it’s a restaurant in Bishop’s Corner. And somehow, it works? Solid menu, definitely a better fit for the location than its previous Japanese buffet predecessor, and they’ll make pretty much any roll you request. I’ve had the gyoza, shumai, chicken lettuce wraps, and the hurricane, all star, and sweet heart rolls. All of these have been very good, well presented, and brought out quickly. Their scorpion bowls are pretty potent but, if you’re ordering a scorpion bowl that’s usually what you’re looking for. I really like the way that the shumai and gyoza are presented, the long, narrow plates compliment the food really well. And last but not least, the happy hour here is pretty kicka**. My only criticisms would be that in comparison to some other sushi spots, it is pricey. And in the general dining area it is so open and between the marble floors, high ceiling, and how closely people are sat together it’s REALLY hard to not listen to everything the people near you are saying, and have to worry that other people are doing the same thing to you.

There happy hour is the top west hartford sushi sushi spot. I hear the hibachi is good but I am not a fan and haven’t tried. They will make any roll you ask for without giving you a side look like your crazy. Service is top and staff are friendly and welcoming.

Got delivery from Koma one night for dinner and I was pleasantly surprised how well seasoned everything was. Based on fellow Unilocalers’ feedback on Koma’s happy hour menu, I decided to give it a go. Ample parking which is a nice change. When you walk in the restaurant, it reminds me of Shrine nightclub at Foxwoods with the deep reds and asian-fusion décor. For $ 3 you can get a Sapporo, which If I could still drink beer I would totes be for. They have $ 5 cocktails and I forget how much their red/white wine is. Menu items are discounted $ 1.50-$ 4 from their regularly priced items, depending on what you order. Service isn’t too fast, but our server was slammed before two other staffers jumped on the bar. On days I don’t feel like going to my regular sushi spot, I’ll visit Koma.

Koma has hibachi and regular seating. We chose the regular seating. We ordered an assortment of items from rolls, to soup, to Pad Thai, to teriyaki. Everything was delicious. The service was very good. The restaurant was beautiful and had a red light theme to it. I bought a groupon for $ 50 worth of food. I paid $ 24 for it because I had a groupon promo code. They also offer a coupon on their web site. I don’t know if I would return at full price but would definitely recommend it for Japanese food in the Bishops Corner area. It looked like the folks in the hibachi seating were having a blast.

Complete overhaul on the old Sakura Garden. With the ‘all-black everythang’ theme it seems like they are shooting for a «higher-end» sushi spot. But, the inconsistent service and run-of-the-mill offerings leave more to be desired. Dinner for two can be pricey and overall pricing leans on the more costlier side. Happy Hour though is pretty awesome — you and your work team can have a nice outing without breaking the bank. Service both in the bar area and dining room although friendly, could use improvement as they have always been spotty. FYI: — Happy Hours are M-F: 4−7pm and Fri+Sat: 930−1130pm bar only($ 4 starters, $ 4.25 sushi rolls, $ 8.25 special rolls, and drink specials)

I want to start off by saying that the food is awesome. Really good quality and delicious. We have ordered delivery several times and have been impressed. However we decided to eat at the restaurant last weekend and it wasn’t that great. Again food was great but the service was average and there were a couple of people before us that were super obnoxious before being seated and the management team did nothing. Also the lighting in the back dining room is really bright. Like uncomfortably bright and it hurt my eyes. Food is great but I suggest takeout instead of eating in.

I’ve been going to Koma fairly regularly for happy hour, meetings, and other gatherings, and the food has been consistently solid since they opened. Plus, they now deliver!!! Service at the bar can be a bit spacey at times(as in the bartender has no clue who ordered what on a fairly regular basis) but I’m never in a rush so I don’t mind. The happy hour house rolls($ 4.25) and specialty rolls($ 8ish) are an amazing deal and a perfect accompaniment to one of Koma’s wines or signature cocktails. Happy hour is often PACKED so as much as I like to think this is my little Bishops Corner secret, it seems like word has spread. Glad they’re going strong several months in!

I came here for my birthday dinner with friends on a Sunday night. We called the week before and made a reservation for 12. When we arrived I was told we would have to wait 15 – 20 mins for a table. This did not make me happy, what was the point of making a reservation. We could see several empty hibachi tables too. But we had no choice but to wait. Not a great way to start my birthday dinner. This is the main reason I am giving this place only two stars. When someone makes a reservation especially for a special occasion, you expected to be seated with 5 mins of that reservation time. And when I expressed this to the hostess her response was that it doesn’t work that way there, a reservations just puts you name higher on the list but you still have to wait… that made no sense to me. Once we were seated the service was better but still not great. It took a while for us to just order drinks. We all ordered various hibachi dinners which came with either soup or salad, fried rice, vegetables and 2 shrimp. The reason I choose this place was because I enjoy the hibachi cooking experience. Our chef was fun and didn’t disappoint. Plus we all enjoyed the sake shots. The portions were quit large, no one left hungry. They obviously knew it was my birthday so they bought over a little ice cream with a candle and the drums. I even got to ring the drums. That was a nice ending to a dinner that didn’t start off great.

After a while Japanese and other Asian cuisine restaurants all seem the same. However, I was pleasantly surprised and impressed by Koma, despite their trying to be overly trendy atmosphere. They have an awesome happy hour in the bar from 4 – 7, which allows those of us that work a little later to still partake. The restaurant itself was huge and they had an ample amount of hibachi stations which were normal table height, rather than the raised you usually see. I arrived around 5:30 on a Monday and it was a little quiet. The bar area is a little dark and mainly lit by red lamps. I went with an eel avocado roll, the mini Beijing duck, and the Mount Fuji. Everything was really delicious, especially the duck which was nice and crispy and had great flavor. The servers at the bar were very attentive. I can’t wait to go back!

I had to travel for work to CT with a few co-workers. We arrived pretty late and figured we would grab dinner. According to Unilocal, this restaurant was close by to where we were staying and received pretty good reviews. Upon entering, the place was a pretty good size and very clean! We were seated immediately. We opted out for hibachi and decided to check out the regular menu. Let me first say… I am OBSESSED with peanut sauce. A dish which includes that is usually what I look for right off the bat. I was a little disappointed to not find any. I had asked our waiter, who was very nice but seemed as though he was in training because he had someone watching over him, he mentioned they don’t have a dish that comes with peanut sauce. Insert deep gasp! He did recommend a dish that came with crushed peanuts, however. I settled on his recommendation and ordered the Chicken Pad Thai. I have to say, it was pretty good. Since I am not a local to that part of CT, I am not sure if I would be back but I would recommend it for anyone who is. The 3 stars is because of the peanut sauce. I just don’t get how they didn’t have any dishes with it being that it was a Japanese restaurant?

Having eaten at the previous Sakura Garden, I was excited to hear that the next vendor in the space was also a Japanese restaurant! Walking in for the first time, décor and ambiance really caught my attention. A lot of red going on but it puts on a nice ambiance. Music was also an unexpected choice, but not bad for the ambiance at all. Lunch specials are all really good. We came with a group of four were all satisfied and full from the amounts that came with the meal. Very good on that regard. I ordered a Pad Thai since I was for some reason in the mood for that. My friend warned me since we’re at a Japanese place it might not be what I expect from q Thai place. She was pretty right since there was a lacking in flavor. It also was missing a lime which I usually see come with pad Thai. However, I actually really enjoyed the California roll that came with my lunch combo, and the spicy tuna roll that I added on for a good price. Really am going to order the sushi next time. Especially since my friends commented that the sushi portions came with large chunks of fish in their rolls, that’ll probably be my choice next time I come around. Another thing that could be improved is service. We came for a late lunch and were the only ones in the restaurant. But there was a point where I wanted a lime waited for a while and didn’t see any waiters around. Even after getting up I didn’t see waiters anywhere to be found and ended up walking to the bar after waiting long enough. We saw the service get better after that, which is a plus. Overall, I can see myself coming back since my friends really enjoyed their sushi orders and raved about the Hibachi. Pad Thai could’ve been better, but I still came out full and happy because the restaurant overall gives a good experience. Looking forward to trying Koma again next time around.

We walked the fine line between four and five stars. At first, we were absolutely bewildered by a policy that thankfully had changed since: all sushi combos, regardless of the number of people they were intended to serve, only came with ONE soup or salad, said our waitress. «Patently insane,» my wife and I muttered to ourselves after ordering a $ 50 sushi combo for two. Thankfully, the waitress returned with a pair of salads. I think our waitress was very new to waiting tables; she didn’t know much about the sushi, she wasn’t aware of the change in the bizarre menu policies, etc. But look, everyone has to start somewhere. She was very kind and attentive. And for that, I won’t fault her or Koma for the minor speed bump at the beginning of our meal. And man did the doors fly off when the sushi combo came. Holy crap, the presentation was absolutely A+. the sashimi served on a bed of shaved ice with garnishes abounding. Rolls cut and served by sixes… One of the sashimi pieces was actually a marinated and cooked rare ahi tuna… nice. There was a little bit of that fake crab stuff in one of the rolls, but it wasn’t enough to make me dislike the whole spread. Domo Arigato, Mister Robo… I mean, Koma…

Good spot. Well crafted cocktails and good wine list. Didn’t have hibachi but got sushi rolls & sashimi platter which were nicely presented & tasty. Happy hour was running which looked like a good time for most

Clean and open, Koma really brings hibachi and entertainment to the area. I like their food and their show provided by their chefs. Very professional and funny which made the experience pleasantly relaxing. There’s something about cooking your food and seeing it prepared while the chef makes corny jokes. It’s not like any other type of dining. Their scallops were fresh and and the filet mignon were tender and juicy. The salmon was also a good option. All of which, were cooked perfectly to order. It’s nice that they ask you first and when most ready they’ll give you a piece to try and make sure it’s cooked to the right degree. Service overall was great and I see they have happy hour deals. Do be prepared for the place to be noisy and warm. Birthdays would result in having drums and a gong accompany servers who will sing for the occasion. They like to use flames and heat for displaying neat cooking tricks on the table.

Koma easily sets itself apart from other hibachi restaurants by its remarkably flashy and eye grabbing décor, delicious scorpion bowls, and overly animated and engaging table-side cooks. These things alone really enhanced the experience and allowed for a really fun time. However, there were some major disappointments which forced an overall two star rating. To summarize, the hosts messed up my reservation which led to an unnecessary three phone calls. Our party of 6 had to wait for about 15 minutes for the table to completely fill before they decided to begin the dinner. Our first round of drinks took an upwards of 25 mins to be delivered. The hibachi’s hood was either off or broken, so we were completely engulfed in smoke during the cooking process. Lastly and most importantly, the food was severely sub-par. The noodles and rice were bland and flavorless, the shrimp was burnt, and the scallops sat on a cooler portion of the cooktop so they were undercooked and tasted like smoke. Overall, I left with a lot of mixed emotions being that I had a great time, but waited entirely too long for service and was displeased wholly by the food.
