Sorry people I am from NC and this bbq is really for the pigs. This mustard base is enough for you to blo your cookies for days. I cannot even give but one star. Cause I have to. Makes me think this is bbq for people with no taste.

Just okay… really hard to find great bbq outside of texas. Ribs were really dry. Brisket was just not as tender as you would expect from a joint that hangs there hat on bbq.

If you like mustard based BBQ… This is for you. The sides were dry. The sweet tea tasted soured. It was not a great experience and I don’t know if we will check it out for a second chance in the future. Not worth the money on the first attempt.

BBQ pork was dry as was the ribs. Some of the worse BBQ that I’ve had in a long time. Very expensive for what they offer on the buffet too. Maybe I’m just used to Shealy’s BBQ in Batesburg-Leesville…

Had the Chicken and it was so dry. It was almost like leftovers from the day before and reheated. Awful! Will not return!

I stopped by last night to pick up some take out on my way from the airport to my hotel. I told the person picking me up that I wanted to try some South Carolina BBQ, so she suggested Maurice’s, and we stopped by. I ordered the #2 dinner, which consists of pulled pork with mustard sauce and two sides, plus a roll and hush puppies($ 9.49). For my sides, I ordered mac and cheese and collard greens. True to Southern tradition, I also ordered a sweet tea to accompany my meal($ 1.49). The order was fulfilled in 5 min., allowing us to get back on the road on short notice. Upon checking into my room, I promptly tucked in. The pulled pork was decent, but the portion size was a bit small. The mustard sauce, which was really flavorful, helped to jazz it up quite a bit. The collards were pretty good, though they were perhaps a bit too salty for my taste. The mac and cheese was of the Southern variety in which the sauce included eggs, making it lighter and airier than the varieties to which I’m better accustomed. The sweet tea was really good, as were the hush puppies. Overall, I was pleased with the quality of my meal. After consuming it, I found out about the late owner’s racist legacy, which led me to wonder if it’s shared by the current owners. As it isn’t clear that it is, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt and won’t dock stars. While I’m fairly sure that there’s better BBQ in Columbia, it hit the spot for convenient take out BBQ on a traveling day.

While visiting family in Columbia long long ago in 1977, I had my first opportunity to try South Carolina style BBQ here at Maurice’s. I have been hopelessly addicted ever since. Despite all the political controversy which swirled around the late Maurice Bessinger in the past, I admired him for his willingness to stand firm in his beliefs. And more importantly, his skill in the barbecue business. He built this empire of barbecue places from this original location, despite the setbacks he encountered through his political opponents. In my opinion, there is no finer meal then a plate full of chopped BBQ with the South Carolina mustard sauce, a serving of hash and rice, slaw, and hush puppies. Adding a few ribs and some skins will carry me to food Nirvana. As some of the other reviews have noted, make sure to check to see if the buffet is available(if you’re hungry). Much better value than a plate. If I’m near Columbia, I’m going to get some barbecue here!

I have lived in the Columbia area all my life, so I was taken to Maurice’s at an early age. After I learned to drive, I started taking myself there and never looked back. The quality of the food has really not changed in the last 45 years. Still served fast, delicious and with a smile. Maurice’s is not only about BBQ. Try one of their hamburgers. You will be pleasantly surprised!

Piggie Park has evokes many emotions for me. As a kid it meant me and my Uncle Curtis were on our way to do something awesome, as a teenager it meant BC High School canteen(Maurice’s grand-kids went to my high school), and as a College Kid and fresh back from Charleston it made me angry as the proprietor was such a biggot. During all of those periods, I did however think the food was good. Maurice has since died, and they family is trying to better their image. That and the fact that I moved close to Piggie Park got me back in the doors a couple years ago. Their footlong hot dog was my favorite dog as a kid. Still pretty slamming. Their burgers are also extremely good. Their namesake ain’t to shabby either. Took my bro-in-law to the buffet two years ago. It was disappointing and gross to be honest. My wife and her brother grew up eating Maurice’s brother’s BBQ in Charleston«Bessinger’s» on Hwy 17. I figured this was the closest he’d get up here. He enjoyed it, but my wife was taken back by the uncleanliness of the buffet and how dated it was. Stick to the menu. Order a plate over the buffet. I’ve used Piggie Park as a caterer several time in the past two years. His smoked pork is to good. His hash & rice is sweet, but real good. Green beans, coleslaw, your typical SCBBQ joint sides all pretty good. Catering prices are great, dining in prices are a little steep in my opinion. Watching your weight? Try the smoked turkey bbq. Real good! I like to get the sandwich no sauce.

The lunch buffet is a great deal on good old southern comfort food. Piggie Park is a good choice.

It’s the piggy park! Always an unhealthy decision but always a tasty decision. I took my neighbor out for lunch and we enjoyed the pulled pork on the buffet. Some items on the buffet had clearly been there a while and the whole restaurant needs some serious tender loving care.

This will always be my favorite bbq place in the WORLD. We have been eating here for 30+ years. There are lots of great bbq places in SC, but this one gets everything right. BEST bbq, hash, fries, hush puppies, slaw. This is a major highlight anytime we come back to visit from FL. You can’t beat Maurice’s sauce!

I have just had the best meal of my 4th of July vacation in SC! I have just had the best ham I’ve ever tasted in my life! The collard greens, the mac n cheese, the sweet potatoes, OMG! This is slap your mama goodness that I just indulged in! The BBQ is good, but you gotta have the ham!!!

We just stopped in for lunch and will never be back. I ordered brisket and my wife had a bbq sandwich. Both sandwiches were so full of fat(I mean BIGGLOBS) that we both returned our meals and had a burger. I have eaten bbq all across America and our experience at Maurices was by far the worst ever. Totally gross!

One the worst BBQ we have ever had. Paid $ 23 for a rack of ribs and 7 $ for a turkey salad. Both were soooo dry and my salad was flavorless. All the food was cold. The buffet was all u can eat for a little under $ 10 but looked disgusting, dry, old. The people were nice but just not good food. Will not return.

I’ve never had mustard based sauce for pulled pork but it was easily the best pulled pork I have ever had. Wow! Maurice’s is perfect for the foodie on the road searching for next great story. Southern style everything, from the tacky southern décor to the collard greens. Delicious, friendly, welcoming, and all around great experience.

I don’t know how the pulled pork taste because it was smothered in mustard. Maybe it’s just me, but where I’m from you let the customer sauce their own meat. I had the combo of pulled pork and brisket. The brisket? Meh. I’ve had better. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t the best I’ve had either. What was good? Those hush puppies were amazing. I should have made a to go order for more of those batter spheres of deliciousness.

I stopped by Piggie Park because, well, I have not had Maurice’s in a long time. Overall I was very disappointed with what I received. I tried to use the coupon that I got from the mobile Unilocal app and the cashier had no clue what it was and just gave me the tea. I ordered the buffet, and for $ 15 I feel that I overpaid. While the buffet does have a good selection on it, the food is cold and and not the quality I’ve come to expect. This is definitely not the quality I remember having. The service was not that well either. I had to sit at a dirty table because they had part of the dining room closed off and no one seemed to want clean up any tables. Overall the buffet was not the worth the price for the quality of food on it, but if you want to try a bit of everything and are happy with subpar food, by all means go for it. Also, don’t bother using the mobile app coupon because no one knows what it is either.

After our nightmare ordeal with Carolina Wings(see my review for further info), we headed over to Maurice’s BBQ in Cayce to feed about a dozen starvin’ kin folk. Hell, we were just glad they were open. Lately, everywhere that we tried to eat were either closed, never existed or flat out couldn’t seat us. I don’t remember Maurice’s offering a buffet, but I’m glad they did. Even though it was much more expensive than expected, it was VERY good. They also offer normal menu items too, so the buffet wasn’t the only option. The food was tasty. The service was pleasant and helpful. Most everything was self serve. I really enjoyed the BBQ pork hash over rice. Banana pudding, although not the best I’ve ever had, was good. Fried chicken was ABSOLUTELYFANTASTIC. Mac n’ Cheese was exactly what you would expect from a southern place. .. baked and cheesy. Broccoli casserole was very good. Loved the hush puppies. The pulled pork BBQ(mustard base of course) was to die for. If you’re from SC, this is what you expect BBQ to be. If not … bon appetite anyway. FYI, this isn’t a gourmet restaurant. No table service to speak of. The floors aren’t glistening. There will likely be a cop or two coming in on his/her lunch or dinner break. The buffet isn’t huge, but it’s always stocked and hot. Oh, and they sell a variety of their BBQ sauces for you to take home.
