Heaven’s Corner is definitely a hidden gem in West Alexandria. If you’ve ever been frustrated by how far away the animals are in the zoos you’ve been to, you’ll appreciate how much closer you can get at this exotic animal sanctuary. I’d say the only drawback HC has is that the enclosures should all be larger, but beggars can’t be choosers, and the facility makes do with what they have, trying to care for a surprising number of animals. If you want to see them in better quarters, consider ‘adopting’ an animal while you’re there to ensure their continued comfort. Much of the meat for the big cats comes from local roadkills, which are stored in a freezer on-site until needed. It would be very difficult to feed the voracious big kitties otherwise with what funding they receive. Spread the word about Heaven’s Corner and get them some more traffic! Your admission fees help a lot. Tigers, mountain lions, bears, snakes, alligators, wallabies, parrots, owls, giant spiders, wolves and more await! Check them out on Facebook too, because they do special events from time to time. I’ve visited three or four times over the years, and the staff have always been gracious and eager to tell us about their charges. Some will even take your camera inside the outer fence barrier and take closer photos of the animals for you, if you ask nicely. Kord, the owner, is as tough and weathered a man as I’ve ever met but genial as can be. He must have a real passion for the animals to keep up with the work the place requires year after year.

Great little private zoo near Eaton, OH. Tucked away in a corner, the entrance to this place is easy to miss, it looks a like a private driveway into someone’s yard! Keep your eyes open for the billboard to point you in the right direction! We attended a birthday party(they have a small area w picnic tables in front of the entrance) and never knew this place existed until then. There are many small animals: lemurs, monkeys, foxes, wolves birds etc. and quite a few large cats: bengals, leopards, panthers. The larger animals include bears and crocodiles. Be sure to visit the reptile house to get your fill of the amazingly large burmese pythons, tarantulas, and other creepy crawlies. There is a petting zoo w goats and donkeys and ducks, feed is available for purchase. Try to get the guided tour, the guide was quite knowledgeable on all the animals and knew the stories behind them all. It was interesting to hear about all the misguided pet owners who thought that crocodiles and leopards would make great pets, thank goodness for rescue shelters such as these!(Made me think of that show«Fatal Attractions» where people get in over their heads with their undomesticated pets.) Overall a small, but really cool zoo. We were so impressed we «adopted» a Mandarin duck. This place is delightful for both the young, the old and in-between. Children 2 and under free, kids 3 to 12 are six dollars, all others nine dollars. Not sure how much the seniors discount was. Highly recommend, short drive from Richmond, IN.
