This place was obviously good. Apparently it’s a classic in the area. We were just visiting and hadn’t done any research ahead of time, so didn’t know about it until my sister told me it was a must-go. We had breakfast and got donuts to go. There’s going to be a line for breakfast, just know that. Even on a Monday morning, which I think is when we went. I’m pretty sure we waited about 20 – 30 minutes. Our server was nice, and we had our 3 month old baby with us, and people were accommodating. Nobody gave us any dirty looks when I breastfed him at the table ;) It’s worth going. It’s not expensive. You don’t necessarily need to have breakfast there, but at least get some donuts. They are damn good. Although, so were the biscuits and gravy that I had :)

Love Congdon’s! Breakfast or lunch is equally good, and a visit must conclude with a dozen doughnuts to take home!

My mom is a «Mainer in Exile» living in Massachusetts. Whenever she comes to visit me, she stops at Congdon’s for a blueberry fritter and a cup of coffee. She loves it here. And I guess I didn’t realize how serious a relationship she was having with this beloved bakery and diner-style restaurant until recently. She took us there after walking Gooch’s and the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge. The first thing that struck me was just how darn nice everyone was. From the young girl at the donut counter greeting us when we first walked in, to the hostess allowing us to sit wherever was most comfortable«since it was slow and at the end of the day», to the FANTABULOUS server(Adam) who went out of his way for us non-stop throughout our late lunch. It literally felt like we were family. Which is the general vibe of the restaurant anyway. It does seem like a diner and your grandmother’s kitchen all wrapped-up in one. Also, the the vintage and old-timey signs, decorations, and art on the walls are so much fun and keep you smiling(it’s okay to take a photo or two — we did!). The donuts are what this place is all about. I had an apple fritter that was moist, sweet, doughy, appley, and absolutely divine with some black java on a cold autumn day. My partner inhaled a maple donut(vanilla donut with white, thick frosting in the center, and smeared with maple frosting on top). And even though none of us were jellied-filled fans, that didn’t stop us from picking away it despite being painfully full! My mom had an ENORMOUS bowl of fresh fruit, my step-dad had a burger with french fries, and my s.o. and I each got an egg and cheese sandwich on an English muffin with a side of home fries. When our server realized we were vegetarian, he asked us if we wanted any kind of veggies on our brekkie sammies which they had absolutely no problem doing for us. I settled on nothing, the s.o. got thick slabs of tomato. My only complaint with this meal was that there should have been WAY more home fries! I’m not sure I would get this again necessarily, but I’ve got my eye on the Congdon Special, Florentine Omelette, and of course donuts, the next time we’re here! Definitely worth the stop if you like baked goods, simple homestyle diner food, good people watching/eavesdropping, and reasonable prices!

Our family lives in Virginia, but visits Maine every few years. We refuse to leave the state until we’ve had Congdon’s. The doughnuts aren’t expensive and they taste incredible. The staff is always friendly and patient when we ask a million questions. One of my favorite places to eat in the world.

Think of the most moist piece of cake you have had, add a honey glaze(if you get one of the glazed doughuts) and you have Congdon’s cake donuts. I have been coming here for over 40 years and they are still amazing, thankfully unchanged. Our strategy is usually to get a few donuts when we arrive or if we wait to be seated, save one as a desert for breakfast and have the others to take home. Favorites are the chocolate glazed crunch and any of the fruit jelly donuts. The food is not outstanding gourmet food but it’s mostly solid fare and tasty. I’ve never had a greasy or tasteless dish here, maybe some misses some time but they have always made it right if that happens. The lobster Benedict gives you about as much meat as a generous lobster roll, and if you ask for sauce on the side, you can have the meat unadulterated and add sauce as you like. In the fall the pumpkin pancakes have a deep pumpkin flavor and come with a cinnamon cream cheese that is smooth, spicy and delicious — we never have any of that left. As others have said, service is friendly and attentive, place is clean and kept up. Packed in the summer, so always leave extra time if you go, this is not fast food, except for maybe the drive through items. Speaking of which, it should be against the law for them to have a drive-through as it makes it too easy to grab donuts on the fly! I hope Congdon’s never changes.

Great place for breakfast. Prices are good, portion sizes large and good quality food. We had the Biscuits and Gravy which could easily feed two people. The biscuits were homemade cheddar that were sliced grilled topped with nicely spiced sausage patties and gravy and accompanied with two eggs and home fries. The eggs were cooked to perfection(I ordered poached) and the home fries were browned and seasoned well.

The donuts and other sweet goodies are delicious. Fresh and just the right texture. I’m not a sweet tooth, but I loved everything I tried. I recommend the fritters, yum!

The blueberry fritter is the best fritter I have ever had. Perfect crunch, just the right amount of glaze and doughy insides. Ours had tons of blueberries. If you want a sweet spot off Route 1 for a delicious made in Maine treat– do it!

Had breakfast here while on vacation. Was about a 30 minute wait at 10:30 on a Tuesday. Hubby had lobster Benedict, I had Irish benedict. Both were really good. A fair amount of lobster and was whole chunks rather than a shredded mess. The Irish benedict was made with homemade hash. Great hash! One of the best homemade hashes I’ve had. We ended up eating the bacon our kids didn’t want. Nice thick cut and cooked perfectly-crispy but not burnt. I ordered a side of baked beans since, hey, we are in New England. Very disappointed. Pretty much Bush’s beans from the can. I was expecting homemade beans. It’s not like they’re hard to make! We stopped at the donut department on the way out. Great selection and so fresh. Would definitely make this my go to donut/coffee shop if we lived here.

This place is so much more than just donuts. I probably never would have given Congdons a chance if it was not for my friend who is a major donut junkie. We stopped in so she could have her beloved donut and I realized they offered many other breakfast items as well. I love a good breakfast, but the Wells area was slammed with beach go-ers this weekend. Last night restaurants were packed with hour long wait times for dinner. I feared breakfast would bring the same fate so Congdons seemed the perfect solution. They have a drive-thru! Delicious drive — thru breakfast without a long wait for a table. I was perfectly happy enjoying my iced coffee and sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich in the car. It was a really good meal and we still had lots of time left to enjoy the morning. There is plenty of table seating inside, but it does get very busy so expect a wait. The drive-thru can be long at times as well, but it moves quickly. There is table service plus a counter to take treats to go(restaurant/bakery). Plenty of options available!

So much more than a donut shop! Irish Eggs Benedict was done perfectly. The bacon is thick and very high quality. Every piece at our table was cooked to perfection and not greasy at all. Home fries were tender and flavorful. My kids even wanted to take the leftovers to go! The donuts were some of the best I have had anywhere. Everything is clearly made with TLC. Our waitress(Taylor) was very polite and seemed happy to be doing her job. Service was fantastic. Get here early(before 8am) to avoid the big lines. I honestly can’t think of one negative thing to say about Congdon’s Donuts!

Hands down BEST doughnuts our family has ever had anywhere in the United States. The. Best. Doughnuts made on-site — you won’t get that with a chain doughnut shop, people! Sometimes they’re still warm when you buy them … oh baby. Service is very good as well.

Holy sweet mother of Jesus! These were the best donuts I have ever had in my life. They are expensive, $ 8.50 for 6 and $ 15.50 for a bakers dozen but they are worth every dollar! They are freshly cooked and so fu&@ing awesome! We took them to go so I can’t comment on the service or food other than the donuts.

Seriously, how anyone could rate this place less than a five is beyond me. If Unilocal had a six rating this would be a seven. Best Jelly donut I’ve ever had and I’m fat with plenty of jellies consumed. The honey dew was also the best ever. If you are even remotely close to this place and love donuts don’t miss it ! Plus they have a drive-thru so us extra fatties don’t even need to get out of the car.

We only tried the doughnuts, but they were excellent. Counter service was really quick, even though it was busy. Employees were genuinely friendly and helpful. My husband and I tried the sugared chocolate, chocolate frosted and honey dipped. The honey dipped was the softest doughnut I’ve ever had and seriously melted in my mouth. I can definitely see why this place is a local institution.

We stopped here for lunch based on reading reviews on Unilocal. It was a cute place to grab a casual sandwich, and of course donuts! The service was very attentive and the line moved along quickly. We both had the reuben sandwich(huge sandwich!) and got donuts to go – along with doggie donut holes for our pups. The restaurant has some great picnic tables outside, so you can order your lunch and then enjoy outside. And yes, the reviews don’t lie: the donuts are excellent!

Got a bakers dozen(+1 free for our active duty member!) and tried a bunch of different flavors. I loved the raspberry filled; the fritters were good — although we didn’t think they were amazing(like the rest of our Unilocaler friends). We would go back, huge selection and it was fun to try them all(we cut them all into 4’s and all got to sample them all). Now, back to bed to snooze off the sugar rush… if we can fall asleep… :)

Love the blueberry fritters and honey dip donuts! The blueberry fritters are soft and love the fried crispy edges dipped in the honey dip glaze. The honey dip donuts are so soft and fluffy, with the yummy sweet glaze, they are perfect.

This review is on the restaurant. The counter side is awesome for donuts, but don’t expect a decent breakfast In the restaurant. I expected a decent meal because it’s always busy. I ordered a simple breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon and toast. I knew something was wrong when my meal was delivered in about 30 seconds. It became apparent to me everything was pre-made. The bacon and toast were both barely warm and limp, yes the toast was damp and limp, not fresh and crispy and must have been sitting around for a while. I would have thought maybe it was jut my dish, but my two kids dishes were the same way. I’ll never eat in this restaurant again and I’ll only get the donuts to go.

We were visiting Ogunquit for the night and saw that this place had the most reviews and the best ratings so we decided to head here for breakfast. Everything felt so right. Walking in, you see rows and rows of perfectly coifed muffins, plump doughnuts, and fancy pastries. I got the Congdon special which came with a doughnut, thick, perfectly cooked bacon, 2 eggs(which I ordered poached hard), home fries that taste like mashed potatoes when biting in they’re cooked so perfectly, and two generous pieces of gorgeous buttered toast. Needless to say it was worth every single not too overpriced penny. We will come back for sure. 5 stars
