Why would I ever go to learn how to dance properly when I’ve been cutting up wedding dance floors decades? Because I was getting married myself and my now wife wanted us to take some lessons. We live in Galveston so this was the closest dance studio we could find that looked legit. We were quoted $ 100 for two initial lessons over the phone, but they wouldn’t give us more information on pricing than the initial 1-hour«lessons.». The place was very clean and looked like a real deal dance studio– blonde wood floors and and floor to ceiling mirrors on the walls. As we walk in, the receptionist was very professional, and immediately asked us to pay first. She then hands us off to one of the dance instructors. At first, our dance instructor seemed very nice. Chatty, friendly, looked the part. Then I started catching on to the questions she was asking. Where do you work? Do you travel much? What kind of car do you drive? She notices my then fiancé’s engagement ring– wow that is so pretty! I was like man«are theses innocent questions or is she sizing me up?» We take a break, she points us to the water fountain, then we re-group at a table next to the dance floor. This is when the pitch came. She takes out a piece of paper and quotes us what is is going to cost by writing out the quote. She didn’t have a standard form. She sized us up for what she thought we would pay, then wrote it down. I don’t claim to be the most business savvy person in the world, but I know when someone is taking advantage of me. The prices she quoted were outrageous. Like $ 600 for three lessons outrageous. Or four lessons for $ 700. And she put the hard sell on. I mean really pressuring us us. Reluctantly, we said we would think about it. Then our time was up and they wanted to schedule or second initial«lesson.» We gave them a date and got out of there. Most of our first lesson was our dance instructor sizing us up then selling us on packages– not even really dance instructing. We ended up cancelling the second lesson because we felt taken advantage of. And guess what when we asked for $ 50 back for the«lesson» we didn’t use? No way, Jose!
