A coworker was in town and wanted German food. While he wanted to go to downtown Milwaukee, I said there is a place closer to his motel and has better reviews. It is Monday night and business was slow. I’ll make it quick. Everything was fantastic! The bread plate which was a soft pretzel and toasts with spreads delicious. The baked French onion soup, I can’t recall any better. I had the Gasthaus combination of sausage, schnitzel, rouland, spätzle, red cabbage and sour kraut. Marvelously delicious. My coworker has a breaded veal which he shared. Also fantastic. Service was attentive and friendly. You want great German food? Forget Milwaukee. Come to Waukesha.

The Schnitzel was fantastic. We live two hours away and are already planning another trip back.

Went here a while ago with my mom on a Wednesday. We sat outside on the patio and it took a while for us to get a server, and it wasn’t too busy. Our server was a younger boy and he didn’t have much knowledge about the menu at all. I ordered a pork chop sandwich that was supposed to come on a pretzel bun. When it came out it was on some other bun and I asked the server about it. His response, «oh I think we got rid of those a couple years ago». So many things wrong with this statement. Food was still delicious! Please make sure the menu is updated because it’s misleading Staff seemed out of tune and unaware of menu items. Especially for something that«may have» been gotten rid of a couple years ago? And bring back pretzel buns! You’re a German restaurant!!!

Went for a highly recommended burger. Can’t get one in the dining room. I was told to go to the bar, order one and bring it to our table. Ordered off the dining room menu. Veal was greasy and full of gristle. Spätzle tasted like paste. Waitress brought the wrong wine and told me I was wrong. Fish was dried out. Huge disappointment. Lots of empty tables…

For a vegetarian and«healthy person» the food is okay, but the kind bar staff will always try to come up with something for you to eat. Even if that means coming up with something that isn’t on the menu; they are always accommodative. I can only speak for the bar staff because I only come in contact with the servers occasionally. But the bar servers are very nice whether you are a regular or newbie, but as a regular, they will remember your drink and food over at the bar. Monday’s are great days for wine drinkers and beer drinkers, and Wednesday’s are the best if you can get a Gasthaus stein.

Years ago Maders in Milwaukee was my defacto German restaurant. I’ve come to Weissgerber’s Gasthaus now a few times and each time it has been out of this world. We have tried their fish fry, variations of schnitzel, saurbraten, beef rouladen, sausage platter, and the pork shank(mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm). EVERYTHING here is awesome! My only complaint is that they do not make a potato dumpling. If they add a potato dumpling as an option with the pork shank they get five stars. In Germany one does not eat a pork shank without a giant dumpling the size of a small child’s head.

German authenticity hardcore. I’ve been here a few times and have loved every bit of it. The decorum has to be incredibly expensive to keep up and the waitresses all wear the German style dresses. Fish fry is amazing, beer is served cowarm/cross between the two. German beer should really be served warm, but Americans drink it cold. Love this place.

Very good authentic German food. I literally felt like I was in Germany while I was in the restaurant. I throughly enjoyed the experience. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and would go again.

Yum! Just visiting the area but wish we had a restaurant like this in Reno! On our next trip we will order soup, salad and appetizers. Great portions but we can’t take leftovers to the hotel. It works because everything looks so good!

Seriously good German fare set in an old German hunting lodge backdrop. We had a great meal, great service, and will definitely return.

Food was good, but the service was so bad I would never go back. Had a table of 6. They said they could seat us in 10 minutes, ended up being 20 – 30. Our total time in the restaurant was over 2 hours. It took so long for the waiter to take our order we were just on the verge of getting the check and going someplace else. Instead we toughed it out and boy do I regret it. While the food had some great flavors, the service was so slow I would never recommend this place to anyone.

What a great find walking distance from our hotel. This looked good from the road, and boy were we glad we stopped. The food was excellent, the staff was great, and the wine was fantastic! It was not very crowded and a little late, but boy was it a good time! I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a good sit down meal.

I ordered a pretzel with cheeses(smoked gouda & melted cheddar) and the pretzel quality was very good but I prefer the ‘Obatzer’ cheese found at other Milwaukee area German restaurants(Old Town Inn, Café Bavaria), the smoked gouda does not cut it. The beer on tap is great.

Meh is right, I have definitely experienced better… and with reasonable prices. The Wiener Schnitzel should be the best item on any German restaurants menu. For $ 28.00 I was served two large, flat, greasy schnitzels with little flavor. The breading was greasy and flat. True schnitzel has a light crispy breading with texture. This tasted like it was sitting in a bath of warm grease. Zero texture with the breading falling off, separating from the meat. The Spätzle was just ok, considering the Schnitzel I just had it was at least edible. I sent the Schnitzel back and order a sausage plate appetizer. It was Ok. My wife’s fish fry was a little better than my schnitzel, but she was not impressed either. Fish was over fried and it appeared to be fried in old grease. The coloring was very dark, not the usual golden brown we experience in a region that lives off Wed and Fri Fish Fry’s. All in all, it was a forgettable experience, go to Maders in Downtown Milwaukee for at least a more consistent experience. Prices are still high, for some reason German food here is expensive. By the Way — I don’t want to be «that guy», who visited Germany/Austria and had the best Schnitzel, so everything is compared to that level… But, I will for a sec. Travel 7 – 8 times per year to Munich, DE /Innsbruck, AUS and yes the Schnitzel and Spätzle is just incredible. Its also like ordering a Hamburger here, it doesn’t break the bank at $ 28 or 30 per plate.

I love this place! Over the holidays, they have a roaring fire and lots of old world decorations. The service is always great; helpful and friendly and even nice to small kids. The servers are knowledgeable about food ingredients(annoying food allergy person) and make good suggestions. You know by reading the other reviews that this place has fantastic german food. If you haven’t been, you should try it. The bread tastes like my childhood. seriously, the fried bread is just like Grandma used to make, literally. I have never made it to dessert, I eat so much food every time I go. Next time, I plan to eat just appetizers and dessert!

Had the Thanksgiving Turkey dinner… Read many great reviews, the ambiance, service EXCELLENT. The breads, soups, Pretzel’s, mashed potatoes, vegetables were delicious. The turkey however was horrible, dry almost jerky dry — nasty. Our wonderful waitress brought us another selection of turkey was a tad better… just disappointing given how great everything else was. We will give it another try(without the turkey) soon.

Whenever I return to Wisconsin to visit family I try to swing by the Gasthaus. The food is of high quality and very tasty. The schwein haxe is very good. The only thing I would like to see is the«traditional» German salad you get at many German restaurants. But that’s just a small thing. I would recommend this as one of the better German restaurants in the Milwaukee area.

Staff are very friendly and the food is always good! I personally love the pretzel– one of a kind! If you’re not interested in spending lots of money, the bar menu has great prices. Also Monday’s always a deal with $ 6 mugs of beer.

I can’t get enough German food when I’m in Milwaukee and fish fries are a must on Fridays! I met my sister-in-law here for a nice fish fry Friday and wasn’t disappointed. Couldn’t even finish my first round of fish and it’s all-you-can-eat! The potato pancakes were good and the fries were very tasty. I usually don’t care for cole slaw but it was actually pretty good. ANd best of all, our server, Becky, was awesome!

Descriptive phrase: authentic, upscale German dinner hall. Don’t let the encroaching suburbia surrounding the Gasthaus throw you off, this unique chalet-looking building was here first and has been serving up the goods for a long time. I was meeting family for a birthday dinner and was able to look around a bit before they got there. There’s a homey bar with plenty of space, as well as a high-ceilined dinner hall with German historical artifacts. You’d never know such a neat(if not dimly-lit) setting were just across the street from a Denny’s and Arby’s. Service was fantastic, making you feel like you were a high roller. The food followed suit. My Weissgerber Amber(from Steven’s Point, $ 4.50 pint) was one of the better ambers I’ve had recently, and fit well with the local German flavor. I ordered the Gasthaus Platter($ 26.50) to get a taste of a variety of things they had to offer. My large plate was filled to the brim with rouladen(beef roll wrapped around house stuffing), wiener schnitzel(flat veal patty breaded and deep-fried), and smoked sausage, with sides of sauerkraut, red cabbage, and spatzle(German noodles). The rouladen was a bit unique compared to my usual tastes, and the stuffing made the beef dish a bit heavier and drier(though not to a fault). The wiener schnitzel was good, but was not a stand-out in the meal. The smoked sausage looked like a longer and less-plastic hotdog, but tasted infinitely better. Paired with the side mustard, it was delicious and just gamey-enough. The amount or red cabbage was a bit much for me, but it went well with the rouladen. I never eat sauerkraut, but I had all of this dish’s. It was just that tasty. The spatzle was spatzle, you can’t really go wrong here. Having been to other authentic German restaurants that I wasn’t crazy about, I was hesitant. But the Gasthaus assuaged all my fears; the food and service could not have been more spot-on. Best German food I’ve had in Milwaukee area yet.
