This is the northern terminus for many Union Pacific North Line Metra trains, at least the ones that don’t continue northward to Kenosha, Wisconsin. I’ve never seen the station open and unlocked, but I’ve always been here mid-afternoon, not early morning. As the station waiting room is locked, the bathrooms are unreachable, never a good situation in a place where you may wait a long time, that’s a long way from anything else. The Waukegan station is fairly pedestrian unfriendly: the walk from downtown Waukegan is a long way down a steep hill and once you get to the tracks, you usually have to go a fair distance up or down the tracks to find a crossing to the center platform ahead of the parked train. I’ve seen people flirt with heart attacks as they charge full speed down the hill to try to catch a train that’s about to leave without them.
