This review is regarding their boat rental service. While they will tell you that their boats are new or «a couple years old», that really can mean over 30 years old! We reserved a «ski boat» for an afternoon and were quoted a fee of $ 250 for a 3 hour period. Not too bad considering that other marinas and boat rental locations were also around the same price for an afternoon rental, but every other location I had called had either current year or previous year boats for rent. Since it was hard to get a last minute reservation we decided to take a chance with Glen Harbor. BIGMISTAKE! We arrived 15 minutes before our rental was supposed to start and signed the usual waivers and were directed outside to a small brown building to get life jackets and our boat. Nobody came by for some time so we asked one of the yard hands who seemed less than thrilled to help. He then gets this boat ready that I literally joked to my wife«this can’t be our boat». It was an old beat up, off-yellow 1981 Four Winns Marquis 170 that had obviously seen better days. I asked if this was really our boat as it looked pretty old and beat up and the yard hand made an off handed comment about it having real leather seats and being the Cadillac of their line. I was flabbergasted, but we were already burning our rental time as it took so long to get us a boat, and we were heading home tomorrow, so we just decided to go with it and give it a try. Second mistake of the day. After just a minute or two it became clear that this boat was in severe disrepair. The steering had so much play in it that just keeping a straight course at 5MPH was truly a battle, with the sloppy steering wheel playing back and forth. The seats were old and worn; the carpeting on the floor was worn and the deck had soft spots from rot. As soon as we got up to some speed, trash and papers began to fly about as the boat had not even been cleaned since the last use. This boat was a shabby embarrassment and the final insult was finding out that the average retail price you could buy this boat outright for was only $ 1,200. Getting charged $ 250 for a 3 hour rental is the worst kind of highway robbery. Glen Harbor Marina — you should be ashamed.

The Watkins Glen Marina is barely in business and years of cutting cost to keep its doors open create a gloomy, desperate atmosphere. Compounding the misery is a staff of unfriendly, locals doing their best to make you feel uncomfortable. The pontoon boat I rented was in miserable condition – moss and clover was growing on the carpet, «leather» upholstery was split wide open on every seat, the speedometer was broken, and the engine belched plumes of fragrant black smoke. A staff member explained the boat was only six years old, a bold faced lie; the broken radio featured a cassette player. Do anything to avoid this terminally ill«place of business.»
