This place was great when it used to be cheap. When I go to a buffet, I don’t expect quality food. I never have. Simply by nature you know you’re going to get food thats going to sit out on a steam table for a while while people cherrypick through it for the choice bits. A few years back, you could go in to this place at dinnertime and pay around 8 or 9 bucks and get a meal of somewhat decent food. Then the prices banged up towards 10 bucks and the food simultaneously seemed to get exponentially worse. Bluntly put, if I’m going to order a meal thats costing me over 10 dollars, I’m going to go somewhere that I’ll have someone serve me and I possibly will have the chance to take leftovers home to finish up later on. You can’t do that at a buffet. That said, the staff always seems quite nice, which is a jarring contrast to the horrid quality for the price chasm. If they could either improve the food and keep the prices, or reduce the price and keep the awful food, it would probably gain a star from me, but as it stands this place is on my very small ‘warn people not to go there’ list. Its a shame, really, because it used to be one of my favorite places in Waterville to eat back when it was affordable and the food was good. If you’re really jonesing for chinese food, the Waterville area has at leasta half dozen better, cheaper alternatives. If you really want a Chinese buffet, I’d recommend taking the time to drive down to Augusta and hit one of the restaurants down there instead.

I recently went to the Super China Buffet for dinner on a Wednesday night. I used to come here for lunch with friends, but had not been back for at least a couple of years. I was looking forward to some really good quality Chinese food, and I like having a variety of items to enjoy at the buffet. We arrived at about 5:30, and there were only two other parties in the restaurant at that time. I was expecting a variety of choices, with fresh food coming out of the kitchen. Unfortunately, it looked like the majority of the dishes had been sitting there for a very long time. Some of the appetizers, including the teriyaki chicken, boneless ribs and chicken fingers, were hot and tasted good. Many of the vegetable dishes, on the other hand, had been sitting for too long and I could not see any steam coming off them, so I did not dare to try any of these. I can’t tell you about the American dishes or desserts, because I was there for the Chinese food. I left feeling very disappointed and still hungry– not a good advertisement for a buffet restaurant. I gave this restaurant an extra star because the hostess and the waitress were both very nice and attentive. Sadly, I will not be returning.
