I have been to this place a few times and enjoyed myself. When I wanted to take my Mom to Washington Island I thought stay at Nelson’s. I looked forward to my trip there. But after we checked in and wanted to go to the dinning room we were told that it was«Closed» for a private party. We were told only place to eat was the bar that was«Choked» with smoke. We then checked out. I didn’t expect to be charged for the room. When my charge card bill came the full charge for the room was there. I called and said I would pay«Half» but was met with anger and disrespect with F**k You Kiss, My Ass and Go To Hell. I called my credit card company and they got«Nothing». You couldn’t pay me enough money to go back there or to Washington Island again. I tell AL my Friends about that treatment I got at Nelson’s and tell them don’t stay overnight there just day trip and leave before the last ferry.

Do it. Join the Bitters Club. While you’re there, have a great meal served by a friendly family. This is the epitome of what so many people are looking for when they visit Door County. No, the salad bar doesn’t have 40 items, but it’s perfect for what it is.

Everyone talks about the Bitters Club, can’t speak to that but the food was excellent! We had the Perch Fry special for dinner. Excellent, light, not too heavy on the batter. The french fries were also the best I’ve had in years! Dinner includes soup and salad bar with hot from the oven breadsticks. Place is clean, neat, and friendly service. Kinda reminded me of the sort of restaurants we frequented when I was a kid, in a good way! Will definitely be here again on our next trip to Washington Island, and will bring the kiddos along too.

A must visit on the island. Tried the fish fry was very good. Service was great. Bartenders were friendly & knowledgeable about the history & helpful getting you your membership into the bitters club. The hidden gem is they also rent motel room next door. Just a short stumble to your room & very reasonably priced. Definitely will return & stay here again.

Stopped here because the place we tried to go to for lunch was closed. Was pleasantly surprised. I would definitely stop again. This is a one of a kind place with so much history and original photos and items to look at. Food was surprisingly good. I had the Perch Sandwich. It comes with crisp, kettle type chips that had a slightly sweet sugar taste. My mom had the Island Cheeseburger. Came with some bacon and crapy onion rings. Service was not the best because they only had one waitress on staff for the whole restaurant, so we had to cut her some slack.

Very great experience. We had some special requests and they were extremely accommodating. Philly cheese steak with ranch was a great recommendation. Would return if we are back on the island.

Great food, friendly service. Oldest continuously legal tavern in Wisconsin. Have a shot of bitters and join the club!

First of all, there is the bitters shot. Its like swallowing Christmas. It makes me feel totally at peace with the world for about 20 minutes after. And then there is the history and lore of the bitters, and the tales of the ghosts that haunt the place. The building and décor are Northern WI charming and homey. The bartenders are super friendly and seem to really enjoy talking to people and their job. Definitely worth a visit!

If you’re coming to Washington Island you’ve probably already hear of this place. You must join the Bitter’s Club! Take your shot, get your card and write in the Bitter’s book. This was on our agenda for the day, and was a must stop while on the island. Even if you explore very little of the island, the ferry ride over may be well worth it to join the club. :) Our friendly bartender actually asked if we had heard of the club and if we wanted to join. We of course were just waiting for the opportunity. Ask around, you probably share your club status with others you may know.
