I’ve bought a couple of items from the dairy and meat section that have smelled rotten. Checked the expiration date and yep, expired. My fault for not checking, but this place could get you sick.

Roland’s is a venerable, small community convenience/grocery store with four aisles and enough inventory of fresh vegetables, dairy, canned goods, etc. to make it a worthy of being called a grocery, In addition, the deli dept. in the rear makes nice sandwiches, with a generous helping of meat at a fair price, on a decent selection of good breads(rye, pumpernickel, etc.). The staff is nice and friendly. The only issues are the prices; one might expect a 50% markup since they are a small store on Capitol Hill, but the prices are twice the supermarket retail prices on every item across the board. For instance, a small can of chunk light tuna that retails for $ 1.49 and goes on sale for $ 0.99 at a supermarket is $ 2.99 at Roland’s. This means fewer sales, and fewer sales means a higher markup is needed to stay in business… as it currently stands it is great for finding things and checking out quickly.

Roland’s has indeed been here since the beginning of time! I went to elementary school at St. Peter’s and it was around even then(I’m currently 35)! Great place for odds and ends but nothing specific(unless you’re looking for soda and candy).

They won me over last night when I discovered they carry GIANTBOTTLESOFORANGINA!!! Oh and they have a decent variety of cheap ice cream perfect for hot nights. Clearly they know they way to my heart!

Rolands is one of the larger convenience stores on the hill. It’s good in a pinch, but I prefer a different store.

OPTIONS: If they don’t have it… then you should have gone to Eastern Market, YES! or Harris Teeter anyways and you know it. Feta, Cabot Cheddar, Organic milk, Double Protein bread, Orangina, Ice, Broccoli & zuccs&carrots, red onions, tofu, brown rice, $$ cereal, etc… they have it. Vodka Sauce, Baking Chocolate, Corn Meal, Haagen Dazz(Pineapple Coconut even) and a variety of domestic and immported wines. CREW: Friendly and chat-up-able. STYLE: Chill corner market that’s a little old and worn around the edges but works every time. Tight-ish so no strollers, carts or extra bags, please. People are friendly about making your way around though. TuneInn and Hawk & Dove next door, as well as the Exxon with oft-a-cop-car makes it safe, even if there happens to be a polite down-on-his-luck chap near the newspapers from time to time.

Everything that’s been said here is pretty much correct. For most people Roland’s isn’t where you’d do your weekly grocery shopping but it’s super convenient for picking up smaller items. If every area had a smaller store like this it would make our communities much more walkable. I actually feel they have a pretty decent selection for how small the store is. True it’s not the place to shop for veggies, but I have picked up a few things from there on the fly that were arguably better than some of the crap I’ve brought home from Safeway. They also have some unexpected surprises, my favorite example being flavored goat cheese. So say what you will but this place has saved my ass many a time.(Plus I just don’t feel like walking to Harris Teeter.)

Rolands is a good place for basic dry goods but I haven’t seen any produce I would touch.

Roland’s is okay in a pinch, but unreliable for most specialty items. Notably, they don’t have: — yeast in a jar for baking bread; — haute cheese; — coleslaw seasoning packet; — low-cal English muffins; — canned beets; — tonight they were out of Budding deli meats. Avocados are $ 1.99 apiece. Soft drinks sold individually or in 6-packs(12-pack cartons). Forget about lamb or any meat beyond basic chicken and ground beef. They *do* have low-fat Ben & Jerry’s, the milk you need, and $ 5 cereal(ouch!). Hold on a sec: avocados, $ 2 apiece, REALLY??? For convenience, one sacrifices selection and cost.

Rolands is a great little grocery in middle of Capitol Hill – House side, on Penn, Ave SE(between 3rd and 4th). They have a good selection of the basics – and beyond– including some produce and a limited selection meats that always seem to be fresh. This is a good place to go to pick up the couple of things you forgot at the supermarket. They also have wine, beer, frozen dinners, canned goods, snacks and so on. One person tried to compare it to a major grocery – you can’t, that’s not what it is. Safeway is down Penn. Ave going east – located at about 14th – turn left off Penn and go about a block.

Has this place been here since the beginning of time? It sure seems that way. I’m surprised this part of Capitol Hill doesn’t have a larger grocery-store-type-place. It’s just Roland’s and Yes! as far as I know. Roland’s is slightly intense and doesn’t have a large selection. But it’s good for picking some basic things up on the fly. Definitely a neighborhood store, though, which is always good.
