I like this place a lot! Friendly staff, decent food, and a great selection of beers! The place is a little small but it’s cozy. I loved the German pig’s feet or whatever it is called~

I’ve lived near this place for about 3 years and have always wanted to go but never got around to it until the other day. Verdict: worth the wait. The interior is really cool, with lots of paintings and German coats-of-arms all over. The servers wear dirndl. The menu is pretty expansive, with lots to choose from, and you can order beer in 0.5L or the big boy 1.0L mugs. The food was good(and in huge portions), and save room for apple struedel at the end of the meal.

My favorite German food of all time. The snitzles are great, let the taste fest begin. If you want a place where everything on the plate is interesting, then this is the place to stop.

Maybe this place was good decades ago. I’ve had some pretty decent German food in the states(Baryn Stube — Gibbson City IL is my favorite). The food is a distant memory of German food and the resultant is dusty and running down.

My favorite restaurant in DC; I eat here once or twice a week. Wonderful schnitzels, hackbraten(meatloaf), soups and seasonal specials like goose and boar. On many evenings, a pianist will perform and Wednesdays are polka night. You should give this place a try if you appreciate timeless recipes and a festive, old world atmosphere.

Food is excellent, but their opening hours are a joke. Have tried to go here a few times, and some days they’re just randomly closed, other times its not lunch or dinner time, and you’re out of luck.

Authentic, authentic, authentic.. Really. Had a great experience at Old Europe from the food to the service. We both had the sampler platter, shared their split pea soup and warm German potato salad. The ambiance is special by way of regional portrait paintings and a huge variety of the regions country Coat of Armor seals. We also enjoyed the area near the restaurant. The drive through old town was well worth the extra few minutes it took to get there from the Parkway. Don’t miss this opportunity if you know or want to experience genuine German and regional food. Oh, kraut was smooth and sweet. Yum

The quality of the food here varies. For example, my friend ordered trout, but his fish was completely overcooked to the point that it was dry. In addition, his potatoes were cold. However, my dining experience was significantly better. I ordered the Kassler Scheibchen, which was smoked pork that was marinated in beer gravy. The beer gravy gave the pork slices character and flavor and was well accompanied by warm sauerkraut and potato dumplings. On top of that, they give you a bread basket, though the bread basket was somewhat cold. I also had mixed feelings about the service. Although our waiter took our order promptly, it took nearly 25 minutes for us to get our food. Despite the mediocre service and food, the interior design was pretty good. For starters, they use real tablecloths — not paper or plastic sheets! Perhaps the coolest feature of this restaurant is the German décor. They even have a real 50 year old cuckoo clock that was recently restored! But despite the awesome décor, I will point out that most restaurants in Germany do not look the way Old Europe does.

It’s Oktober! And that means it’s Oktoberfest time! I’ve been looking forward to coming here for a few weeks now that it is October. I’m unclear whether the place is normally decorated with streamers and flags, but I did notice a banner with Oktoberfest hanging near the back. Lots of German fun facts all over! We walked in for a late-ish lunch, and only one other couple was there, but soon after our arrival, the place started to fill up. Service was great and attentive. Waitresses dressed in traditional German Dirndls came over to greet us, take our food and drink orders, bring items, and make sure we were happy. The bread basket was an assortment, and the butter was easy to spread so that was a positive. I also noticed that if you wanted more bread and butter, you could request it. I ordered a pretzel, which I didn’t see on the menu, and the combination sausage platter. The pretzel was good, if not a little small and expensive, but the Bavarian sweet mustard accompaniment was dynamite. I didn’t particularly care for the Weißwurst and thought the potato pancakes were a little dry. What helped was the sauerkraut and other mustards(I think a honey mustard and dijon?). The star came towards the end and was a bit surprising. Dessert is not listed on the menu but if you would like to consider it as a final course, the waitresses present an assorted platter: German chocolate cake, bavarian cream pie, almond cake, strawberry cake?, mousse pie, etc. I ordered the almond cake, and it was awesome! The fresh fruit that came with that and the German chocolate cake were refreshing. I also liked the sauce with the almond cake; the German chocolate cake had a raspberry sauce but wasn’t what I expected for a German chocolate cake.

The food are classic Germany. All the dishes are definitely staples in a German home. Arguably, the dishes are more Northern German than they are Southern or Austrian in taste. However, the food was still great! The Wiener Schnitzel was excellent. Roasted poTatoes with bacon were to die for. The strudel came warm with a cool vanilla sauce. If you’re Austrian or Bavarian, like me, you’ll be surprised with the sauce. [That’s not how we eat it. ;)] But it was still very good! Service was attentive. Although, there was only one waitress who spoke German out of the five. No biggie. The only downfall is parking/not knowing where to park. They don’t have any designated parking aside from street parking. So, it’s very easy to drive around a few blocks trying to find a space if you aren’t able to get street parking in front of the restaurant. Also, CALL for a reservation as the wait can be quite long and/or you may not even get to eat.

I was VERY impressed with this restaurant. I looked up German restaurants because of my German classes in college and my professor talked about all the delicious food that Germany had to offer. There were 2 restaurants in the DC area that served authentic German food and this one looked more appealing and seemed to be a cheaper price for what you get. It’s a little hole in the wall restaurant downtown by Tenleytown. That was another appealing thing. Chain restaurants usually don’t have the authenticity that a family owned restaurant has. The décor was amazing! Lots of culture and I would love a cuckoo clock just like the one they have hanging on the wall! The dirndl that the waitresses wore was very cool. It seemed like a pretty formal place, but I didn’t feel out of place wearing my t-shirt and jeans. I researched the menu online before going. A lot of the food wasn’t something I would eat, so I ordered the chicken schnitzel, which came with the house salad and home fried potatoes. I’m not a big salad eater, but it was decent. Wasn’t sure what all was in the salad because it is not like a traditional American salad. I ordered the breaded schnitzel. When it came out, I was impressed with the portion size. The potatoes has parsley and bacon bits on it and were absolutely amazing! The chicken was very tender and I was able to cut it with a fork. The breading had a great taste. I ended the meal with a slice of cheesecake that was amazing. I took home a meal to my husband. He loved the meal and said it was very delicious, even though it was a little cold. He also had the fruit strudel that was obviously made in house. The wait staff was very nice and were great explaining the different foods because the names of the dishes were in German. Our two waitresses both had a strong accent, with one saying that she was from Bulgaria. I am still working on my German language skills and were patient with me as I tried to speak as much German to them as I could. A gentleman, who I assume is the owner, came around to each table a couple of times and asked how our meal was. Over all, I was very impressed with this restaurant. My family and I will be in the DC area every year and I plan on going to Old Europe at least once every time. Thank you for a great experience!

The décor at old Europe is really authentic, I loved the chairs and the wall hangings. The beer list is outstanding, they even have Uerige, a rare beer from Düsseldorf. The menu is German rather than Austrian or Bavarian, but they do serve Wiener Schnitzel. I was a bit disappointed with the pickled red cabbage which was soggy and lacked«bite». But the great drink selection — they have numerous varieties of German brandy for after dinner drinks and the pleasant service made for a very nice meal.

Probably my favorite restaurant in Glover Park. I really like the old time European atmosphere. The cuckoo clock, portraits and model ships all really make this a fine dining experience. I have been here for dinner on multiple occasions and my favorite dish would have to be the Hungarian beef stew with spatzle. Especially in the winter if you are looking for a filling warm dish of food, you can’t go wrong with the stew. I have also tried the trout and the pork, both of which were great. Their most popular dessert is their apple strudel, which is very good, but would be even better with some vanilla ice cream. The waitresses are dressed in cute traditional German dresses and are friendly and pleasant to talk to. There usually is an older crowd and quite a few of the customers speak German with the staff.

Décor and ambiance is kitsch. But the food is good and seems authentically German(a notch above the restaurant portion of Café Mozart in terms of food quality). I was very happy with my pork hock which was salty, fatty, and flavorful — just the way it should be. Everyone else seemed satisfied with their foods as well. Portions are very generous and prices reasonable, making this place a nice option when you are in the area.

Was a fan of the place but will not be going back — disappointed by the nickel & dime-ing. I’ll preface this by saying I’ve come here regularly for lunch ahead of my last time. Always like the offering which is very rich and«old-word“y to go along with a great ambiance. Went for dinner with 3 others and between the 4 of us we got 3 entrees, 5 beers, desert, and 3 schapps. For some reason they added a «plate fee» for not having gotten 4 entrees though our meal was about $ 200 after tax/tip. Asked the waitress about it but were spurned and told the fee would stay. Just rather disappointed by that and it really puts a damper on the experience when it’s otherwise been great but they try to squeeze just a little more out of you. We’ll I hope it works for them to charge for these silly extras and dampen the customer experience. Don’t think I’ll be going back.

Went here for a belated birthday dinner for my 2nd generation German-American husband, who grew up eating his grandmother’s homemade German fare. He loved the traditional Sauerbraten(braised steak) with spaetzle and sweet red cabbage. Just as good as his grandma’s with the perfect mix of sweet and sour. Being less adventurous, I enjoyed the chicken schnitzel, hunter style: sautéed chicken, covered with a mushroom and bacon cream sauce. The side salad had a tasty parsley vinaigrette. Hubby was also pleased with the tastiness if the gluwhein(traditional burgundy mulled wine). We chose a chocolate mousse with a raspberry sauce for dessert and were not disappointed.

This place was fun! The waitresses were dressed in traditional German clothing and the décor of the place was very quaint(in accordance with the theme of the place). We came here mainly for after-dinner drinks to warm up but the menu was so enticing that we ended up ordering some food as well. I think the drinks are on the holiday specials menu so I’m not sure if they normally have them… but they were amazing. Between my friend and I we had 3 beverages– gluhwein, apple cider, and an elderberry/wine warm drink. All were scrumptious. Their different types of breads/butter were also very good and filling(although they served some sort of pork fat dip in addition to butter… was remniscent of gravy but not in a good way). As for food, we ordered the cheese spaetzle, potato pancakes with applesauce, and the sausage combo with sauerkraut. All of the different sausages were very good and the portions were plentiful. I really enjoyed everything and would come back when in the mood for some good German grub.

This place is great. The owner manages customer service himself. They don’t assign waitstaff per table. They all just help. The house schnitzel is recommended, as is the butchers platter. Atmosphere is very typical German restaurant. Homemade sausage, homemade mustard, homemade schnitzel. Make a reservation so you don’t have to wait.
