This the best food. Eric is a master at what he does in that kitchen. If you are looking for a real true fine dining experience then this is the place. Great atmosphere and location. The scallops and the pineapple desert that I had was so mouth watering. Please experience this you will not be disappointed.

There is no wonder Kinship is considered hot and new! The bar served interesting and different drinks to excite your sense of adventure, and nailed the classic martini with blue cheese. All the courses served were beautifully presented, tasty and cooked to perfection. No wine glass was ever dry during the course of the meal. Service was exceptional! And, the large presentation of fresh cherry blossoms on the bar set the stage for a delightful evening. To the chef! Jeannie B.

The ambiance is lovely, dim lighting and individual«booth» type seats for individual privacy and service was good. Outside of that, I was underwhelmed with the food, or more specifically underwhelmed given the price tag. Somehow, 3 plates of food(not per person, total) plus one drink(again, not per person, total) ran our bill to over $ 100. Which no, is not a lot to spend on a meal out — but I do think it is a lot given the quantity in that I was not full when we left. The scallops picture is not accurate in that, that is one of two scallops the entrée was served with. Overall, I did enjoy everything we had — sea urchin might not be my thing but the flavor was on point with everything but nothing that truly blew me away, and I guess my personal biggest issue was leaving hungry. The lobster French toast was pretty good, the French toast had more of a pancake consistency to me – and as you can kind of see in my blurry photo, it’s quite tiny, especially for $ 30. I guess for $ 30 I would expect a bit more, entrée size at least just a tad more. Overall, based on my experience I supposed this isn’t the restaurant for me.

3.5*** I think the idea of this place is better than the actual food. It’s got a clean, austere, minimalist design and sadly, the food somewhat echoed that. The sea urchi agnolotti was very good but TINY and needed another textural element bc by the end of the dish, all of the tatses started to blend together. The pasta with truffles SOUNDED blissfully decadent. But after eating it, I felt like a sucker for having fallen for the show. The noodles were light, the sauce was creamy and there was LOTS of shaved truffle. But overall, the dish was just kinda okay. We also had the Kinship Stroganoff, which was actually quite delicious. But the portion was tiny. My partner and I ended up combining the two dishes and THAT was delicious. But this isn’t a buffet and we shouldn’t have had to create a better dish than what was presented. The wine selection was decent but could have offered more. And the peanut brittle dessert was pointless. It was good — but for the price and given the hype, we were simply expecting a lot more.

Often when you try a new restaurant, you take a risk. There isn’t the time to fully work out the kinks. Well, not Kinship — exquisitely prepared food, outstanding service, beautiful ambiance. A little about the menu — it’s organized by style of preparation, not by course. For instance, the«Craft» category is what the chef is exploring in technique. «History» is a reinvented take on classic dishes. «Ingredients» is an exploration of a culinary symphony around one ingredient. «Indulgence» is exactly that — special items that you don’t eat everyday: caviar, lobster, truffles, kuroge beef etc. In addition they have large portions called«for the table» which are meant to be shared and foster«Kinship» amongst the diners… We ordered the Baby Beet Pot au Feu(craft) and the Blue Fin Toro Sashimi(indulgence) to start — Out of this world flavor on both counts. A delight to the senses, without over seasoning. Then we ordered the Chesapeake Rockfish(Ingredients) and Maine Lobster French Toast(Indulgence) — Deliciously marvelous. It struck us how closely the experience of eating matched the chef’s intentions. For example, the Rockfish’s sauce and accompanying vegetables were a unique blend to highlight not only the fish’s taste but also its texture. The lobster French Toast was indulgent, but not overly sweetened or as heavy as we would have thought — again perfection! Our server and all the staff tended to us as if we were VIP’s. Cheerful, informative, prompt and attentive without being invasive or hovering, they were respectful, extremely knowledgeable and seemingly passionate about their job. Finally the ambiance: I am French, I grew up in Paris, and I recognize that this place has French overtones in style all over the place. From the minimalist beauty to the monochromatic palette of the décor — everything is meant to be pleasing but without attracting too much attention — so that the color, the sound, the life comes from the food and ensuing conversations. C’est magnifique!

It’s amazing how the area has changed so much since we first moved into the city. I remembered eating on the same street exactly a year ago at a dive bar. Now this amazing, chic restaurant with valet parking — the new«go to» for every Washingtonian foodie. My husband and I chose Kinship to celebrate our 5th year dating anniversary. With endless glowing reviews, we expected more. Ambiance was wonderful; service was outstanding. What fell flat were the foods. My husband and I each ordered an appetizer, an entrée, and a dessert. He went with the tempura, sweetbread with beef tongue, and apple confit. I opted for the sea urchin agnolotti, lobster French toast, and vanilla custard cake. Perhaps they were worried that they would scorch the uni? but my agnolotti as served lukewarm. It felt as if it was pre-prepared as was waiting for someone to order. The agnolotti didn’t have much flavors. Not sure if the pairing of sea urchin and agnolotti was the right idea. Overall a very bland dish. Lobster French toast — my lobster was definitely overcooked. It was almost impossible to cut and I had a hard time chewing through. The buttery French toast out shined the lobster. To an extent where I probably would have enjoyed this dish more if I was given two pieces of French toast and no lobster at all. Again, this dish was also served lukewarm. Perhaps they spent a lot of time assembling/beautifying this dish… Left sitting out for too long. The other dishes and desserts were good but nothing to write home about. Wished we gave their chicken for two or chocolate chip soufflé a try after seeing their beautiful presentations at tables nearby. But after sampling and being disappointed by two of their most popular, raved dishes, we will save all future celebrations elsewhere.

Wow this place was absolutely decadent not only from the very inviting warm waiting area to the equally nice décor of the bar area and the dining area. Both my friend’s meals and my meal was just as decadent as I opted for the lobster french toast and my friend ordered the torchon of white mushroom and scallops. We finished off the meals with chocolate chip soufflé which was a must and you get a toffee brittle if you order tea or coffee. the prices were pricey but I could see why. It’s not the type of place that you come often but definitely one to try for a nice special night out. Overall, I’d love to come back and try the other dishes.

Truly a fabulous meal! The best meal I have had in Washington DC in many many years! The lobster French toast was magnificent. Who thinks of a combination like that? Other hits were the Shoat– which I learned is a young pig. Hard to describe but also great. We also had the lamb and which is one of the meals cooked for 2. The mini rolls that accompanied the lamb tasted like a warm home made donut. The lamb was perefctly cooked medium rare and seasoned simply but to perfection. The side of grits was decadent. Be prepared to enjoy a dinning experience at Kinship. The meals moves along at a slow pace. Of course when you are enjoying as much as my 4-some did, who cares. My wife and I enjoyed our meal so much that we canceled our upcoming April anniversary dinner at the Inn at Little Washington to back to Kinship instead. I can’t think of much higher praise than that! I will be back again and again, that is of course assuming I can continue to get lucky and successful get through to make a reservation!

So glad that Eric Ziebold is back cooking in DC. We had the lobster french toast, the baby beets, the tempura, the tagliatelle, the duck, and the chocolate chip soufflé. All were excellent. We also enjoyed our cocktail and wine selections. Kinship is likely to be the best new restaurant in DC this year. Can’t wait for Meiter to open!

Best food I’ve had in a long time. Juiciest lobster(«french toast») I’ve had ever. Bread is fresh and savory. Perfectly executed. Just sad I came alone(business conference) so didn’t have enough appetite for their family style platters.

Enter a world of creativity at Kinship. From the décor, to the service, to the menu and food, you will notice the unique qualities of this up and coming restaurant. We fell upon this place serendipitously while searching for a late dinner spot. We had not heard of this place but we are familiar with the area and were intrigued to see this new restaurant that opened up near the old LivingSocial office. We initially walked past the door because it is not obviously labeled which I think adds appeal. As soon as we entered the double doors, I realized I recognized this place from pictures Hannah H had added on Unilocal ! We didn’t have a reservation but we only waited 10 minutes on a Sunday night around 8:15 pm. The hostess greeted us and then said she would go check on something. Not a second passes before a managerial like gentleman approached us and asks if we were being helped. Yes sir we were! I liked that. They check your coat and give you a plastic number to get it later. We hung out in the cute waiting area by the fire. Loved it. We were then seated by the hostess. Our server was Alexander. He had a cheeky sense of humor but lucky for him, so do I when I need it. We weren’t very dressed up and we didn’t know the restaurant was a little bit fancy so maybe he didn’t like that. Anyways, he was just fine as a waiter. He did forget to add our sparkling water and unfortunately(for him) the managerial looking gentleman grabbed our check with the credit card and we ended up having to tell him(it wasn’t a complaint or anything) but I guess they all help check people out. The manager fixed it but the waiter brought it back and he seemed annoyed. Hopefully we didn’t get him into trouble. Ok, I digress! The menu is a simple, yet unique description of the chefs interests/moods or journeys. Each column has two appetizers on top, a main dish then a dessert listed. One section all the way to the right are starters and then the bottom portions show larger, more expensive main courses and desserts intended to feed two people. They come around and serve you one or two slices of their fresh bread. We had citrus infused bread and a multi seed one. The citrus was amazing and the seed one robust. The butter is left on the table. The bread is not. They will come back around once more again to serve you bread though. This was great because the bread was super fresh. The scallops were scrumptious! The infusion of flavors in that dish was amazing. You can taste each ingredient and flavor. You will enjoy the whole experience and find yourself dipping your bread in the left over garnish of this started. My husband had the rockfish which had tofu and mushroom. I can’t comment on the taste but he liked it. I had the duck and it was OK. The fermented black beans were the limiting factor for me. There was one piece of duck that was a little extra fatty but the rest was crispy and cooked to perfection. The dessert was the sticky toffee pudding and they pour butterscotch over it. This was delicious. The earl grey ice cream is a unique touch but i ended up not liking the ice cream with it. I focused on the rest. The cake portion of the dessert was fluffy and a good companion to the butterscotch. The décor and ambiance is extremely romantic. It has a classical, old English feel as well when you see the tufted couches and tufted wall bench at the back. The ceiling is fun to look at with the many hanging cylindrical lamps. Expect to spend at least $ 100 for two people(without Alcoholic drinks). The main dishes are not large so get more than one starter. All in all, this was a 4 to 4.5 of 5 star experience. We hope to return again soon one day for another great night. Thank you Kinship for opening up in the neighborhood!

Wonderful concept, food, service, and drinks. Sure to be the next top restaurant in DC. We had a phenomenal dinner here this past Saturday night. Valet parking is $ 10, and there’s a great bar and seating area with a lovely fireplace and great cocktail menu. I went with six people so I had the great pleasure of trying out many of the dishes. Not one was underwhelming. We really enjoyed the mushroom torchon, foie gras, sauerkraut, and sweetbreads. The«appetizer» size was generous enough to share a couple bites with everyone. We also shared the chicken and lamb. Both were delicious and could absolutely serve more than 2 people. The chicken was served as a full rotisserie chicken, which they then sliced. Served with a frisée salad and plenty of potatoes. Again, definitely a dish for more than 2 to share, particularly if you’re having a few appetizers. I think when I go back, we’ll opt for just the smaller plates, simply to try more. 2 each, or up to 5 between 2 people, is plenty. Also, the Parker house rolls served with dinner were melt in your mouth delicious — and the perfect little size. The bread before dinner was also delicious, particularly the citron bread. The chef also served a small taste from the kitchen, including a «shrimp broth» soup. We ended with some espresso and complimentary peanut brittle to crush with a small hammer. The winning dessert of the two we had was the toffee pudding. The earl grey ice cream was so good. Three cheers for Chef Ziebold! We look forward to returning!

Kinship is a modern American restaurant by Chef Eric Ziebold(CityZen). The menu is sectioned off into specific categories: ‘Craft’(celebrating cooking techniques), ‘History’(classic dishes), ‘Ingredients’(celebrating of a specific product/item), ‘Indulgence’(highlighting specialty items), and ‘For the Table’(large plates to be shared, ‘family-style’). FLO S., ADRIENNE M., and I came here for a little ladies’ night get-together for dinner, and we tried the following: Crispy Corned Beef Cheeks(with red flannel hash and horseradish soubise — these were large cubes of shredded corned beef that had a nice little tang from the hash; I was actually surprised with this dish for being pretty okay in taste); Scallop Navarin(sauteed sea scallops, baby turnips, braised pea shoots, and navel oranges; the scallops were smaller, lightly seared, and the little navel orange slices were an interesting citrus-y touch); Hungarian Sauerkraut(with wine-braised shoat shoulder and savoy cabbage, fried bread, and crème fraîche; I actually was a fan of this dish, as the braised shoat shoulder was unbelievably fork-tender and had the right amount of fat to it; the savoy cabbage was a nice complement, and the dollop of the crème fraîche just added a slight coolness to the dish); Maine Lobster French Toast(with permission, cucumber, and sesame mousse; my dining counterparts were total fans of this dish, but I was just okay with it; the lobster was nice and meaty(love the claw part), but it seemed to be not as decadent as I thought it would be — it was actually just lightly drawn butter, set on top of a french toast; not sure if I was feeling the sesame mousse); Shaved Perigord Truffles(hand-cut tagliatelle with a castelmagno cheese sauce — this was also just okay — I prefer it to be more creamier, slightly saltier, and more cheesier; the pasta was slightly overcooked, so I would love it to be more al dente; I appreciated the sliced truffles on top); and, a Kinship Roast Chicken(with lemon-garlic panade, and served with a side of pommes rissolees and frisee salad; the chicken itself looked beautiful, as the whole roasted chicken was shown in the skillet at first before being brought back to being carved; it was super juicy, and the skin had a tangy citrus taste; however, I was more of a fan of the pommes rissolees, as they were super well-seasoned and crispy; the frisee salad was one of the best I’ve had, as it was perfectly-dressed with the vinaigrette and contained long shredded pieces of roasted chicken — yum!). The chicken was served with Chef Ziebold’s famous Parker Rolls — honestly, I can eat these little love bites 24÷7÷365. Perfectly buttery, bite-sized, and super tasty, no need for any spreads(I actually requested 2 more ‘refills’). For dessert, we tried: a Pineapple Crumb Cake(with pineapple compote and a side of cream cheese ice cream; the crumb cake was nice and moist, and I wished it had more of the pineapple compote; the cream cheese ice cream was pretty tasty!); the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Soufflé(served with a side of milk ice cream; this was pretty tasty, and it tasted similar to an airy bread pudding; I usually like Grand Marnier or pistachio souffles, but this was a nice little version); and, the Black Rock Orchard Apple confit(with bay laurel mousse, cashew financier, and smoked vanilla ice cream — this was like a little apple tart; it was okay). The restaurant itself is not too large, but just the perfect size of being super intimate, chic, and beautifully-decorated — there is a little seating area with lovely chairs across from the hostess, a nice bar area, cute little booths, and a small dining area. Our main server was Mr. Milan, who was super friendly, sweet, informative, and very attentive; we also met the other servers on staff, Mr. Isaac and Mr. Kenny, and they were very accommodating, sweet, and attentive. What really put this restaurant over the top was that even though we had the last seating reservation, we were in no way ever rushed in our experience — from having such a good time, time seemed to have warped on by, and I was shocked that we were at the restaurant for that long; I was slightly uncomfortable, because I would have loved for someone to let us know that the restaurant was closing, but the staff and manager here seemed to be super laid back and really encourage all of their dining patrons to take their time, enjoy, and finish whenever they’re ready to do so! Unbelievable. I’m glad that I was able to check this place out, and I’m curious to see what other additions they will make to the menu: D +Parker Rolls: D :D :D +Hungarian Sauerkraut: D +Crispy Corned Beef Cheeks +frisee salad(from the Kinship Roast Chicken) +pommes rissolees(from the Kinship Roast Chicken) +Cookie Dough Soufflé +ask for Mr. Milan, Kenny, and Isaac: D +friendly and wonderful staff: D +super customer service: D +beautiful restaurant: D +online reservations accepted +valet parking offered($ 10)

My husband and I were really excited to try Kinship after hearing all of the rave reviews and we are so glad that we did! It is located right next to the are where Passenger used to be(it’s closed now). We were unable to get a reservation initially, but I put my name on a waitlist so when there was a cancellation, they called us which was AWESOME. The waiter was super friendly and accomodating. He had some very good recommendations for us. We pretty much followed exactly what he suggested since I figured he would know best. We ordered 4 dishes to share from the top portion of the menu. We wanted to try the chicken for the table but he said it would be an hour to cook and sadly we didn’t have the time to wait. Our dishes were: Sauerkraut– my husband’s pic. It was tasty, but not outstanding Lobster french toast– simply amazing, WORTH the hype Agnolotti– wow wow wow, you MUST get this dish. It was BEYOND memorable Duck breast– really good, but not the best I’ve ever had The whole meal overall was tasty and satisfying, however only tw of the dishes really stood out which is why I gave Kinship 4 stars instead of 5. I would love to go back and try more dishes since the price was fairly reasonable for DC. Without a doubt, we enjoyed the meal and would return!

Someone once told me that to truly get a restaurant, you need to go at least twice and maybe three times for good measure. So, that’s what I did. The first time I had a star treatment, so to be fair I had to see how consistent Kinship really was. The story goes.. . Kinship was on my radar for quite some time as the new hot and trendy. Yet, that’s the opposite of what Kinship is. Sure, it’s got that cool minimalistic feel upon entrance but there’s something in the ambiance that makes you instantly feel comfortable, at home. Yes, there’s also the cool factor that Chef Eric Ziebold from CityZen now runs his own show here, but fan fare aside — this place is not just hype. Is it the polite and affable staff at check in? Possibly. Is it the clean ambiance, dim lights, and spares but thoughtful setting? Could be. Or could it simply be that it actually delivers on its name, «Kinship» — a feeling of being connected to people. Yes, that’s it. To be sure, the food is fantastic. It progresses from different offerings from their craft to classic to indulgences — a nod to the local, the traditional, and the flair. The signature maine lobster on french toast? innovative. different. unexpected. Definitely unexpected for DC. haha :) The corned beef checks with the light crispy breading just falls apart. It’s amazing. The roasted chicken? As tender as you’d think it is. If there’s anything that I think is lacking — it’s their desserts. While beautiful and well done, they were not flavors that I hadn’t tried before — just made differently. Presentation is spot on — piquing enough for conversation but doesn’t detract from your conversation. It causes you pause to savor the flavors, the textures, and then to animatedly discuss and resume your kinship. The chef comes out to greet his friends and special guests which was nice(this only happened the first time I went). I found out that Kinship used to be a furniture store and had some interesting structural issues to work around with that. Also, they intentionally left some of the original walls non-dry walled to keep the character. As for service — it is pretty consistent both times I went. Admittedly, the second time I went — I felt a little rushed and pressured. However, nothing that couldn’t be overcome. The only real advice I’d give is that the waiters/waitresses provide a more detailed description of the menu options. diners love a good story so the more you can tell us, the more we find the experience all the more enjoyable. This place is special — it feels like a place where if you had a bad day, this is the place to forget it and that in itself is worth a lot in high pressure city like DC. Oh, and be sure to order their cocktails. My favorite is the Sicilian Riveria. :) … and take it at their waiting room. You’ll thank me for it. :) PS – Please have a seasonal menu! :) Happy dining!

This is the best restaurant in DC right now PERIOD. ENDOFSTORY. GOODNIGHTCLEVELAND. GOODBYEFELICIA. We have always been fans of Chef Ziebold, and Cityzen was our«special occasion» spot. Now I understand what he is capable of when he is completely running the show in his own spot. The space, the service, the food… SUBLIME. First things first: we were running late(very late) for our reservation due to DC traffic, and called the restaurant fully expecting to get the«we can hold the table for 10 minutes» spiel that you get for a hot new place on a Saturday night…“What time is ‘Deadpool’ playing?” We wondered as we made alternative plans. All for naught however when we got a cheerful«Of course we can hold it for you until you get here!» response from the hostess… our spirits were immediately lifted. What we arrived to is best described as minimalist elegance. Calming grey walls, comfortable seating, and tables spaced widely apart(a rarity when the«pack ‘em in and turn it over» mentality seems to dominate these days) and an austere decorating scheme that allows to to concentrate on the experience without distraction. Our server could not have been more perfect with a mix of professional knowledge and casual attitude that made us feel immediately at ease. We started with drinks that packed a punch without being too much, and we were not rushed to make any decisions on the menu. Decide we did though: we sampled the Lobster French Toast(A MUST) that was overflowing with lobster, the Tagliatelle with black truffle shaved table side(again — OVERFLOWING with truffles), the Sweetbreads with Spaetzel(the man knows his way around a thalamus gland), the ribeye with scalloped potatoes,(the best piece of cow I’ve had in a long time — and I want to bathe in those spuds), and finally the Sticky Toffee Pudding with Earl Gray ice cream(if the spuds aren’t available, please fill my tub with the butterscotch sauce that goes on top of this one). It’s not cheap, but I can count on one hand the restaurants in DC that I feel are worth the money, and Kinship is the index finger.

If I spend $ 200 on dinner for two– without alcohol – I want to feel particularly wowed, and while the dishes were good, the service was rather slow. My favorite item was dessert: sticky toffee pudding($ 12). I could smell the warm butterscotch sauce the moment the waitress poured it around the cake, and it tasted as good as it smelled. The earl grey ice cream balanced out the sweetness of the sauce. I often find desserts to be a bit of a let-down, but this made me really want to try their other desserts, which also sounded really good. I was most looking forward to the lobster french toast($ 30), which was just as luxurious and buttery as I’d hoped. I know it’s weird to wish for anything other than more lobster in a dish, but I actually liked the pairing of the french toast with the lobster and thought there could have been a little bit more bread. The sashimi($ 30) was fine but I think I just have no real appreciation for raw fish. The agnolotti($ 18) was yummy; cheesy sauce just oozed out of the pockets of pasta in the best way, and the fatty, smoky lamb bacon was a great pairing. The roast chicken($ 56) wasn’t as magical as other people said, but certainly had a lot of lemon-garlic flavor. There was something stuffed under the skin that I couldn’t quite identify but didn’t seem to add much to the dish. I really liked the frisee salad; they mix the dark meat of the chicken, the greens and a light, Asian-tasting dressing. The crispy potatoes were fine and the teeny-tiny parker house rolls were salty and buttery and little clouds of delight. The problem was, everything moved super slowly. We had a 6 p.m. reservation and weren’t done until around 8:30. The table next to us(also a two-top), ordered after us and got all of their dishes faster than us. We spent a lot of time just twiddling our thumbs. After we got our bread, the sashimi came relatively quickly, there was a lull until we got the agnolotti and lobster, and then a very long time before we got our chicken(I think the busboy felt bad for us so he offered two more slices of bread while we waited). Our neighbors seemed to always have food on their table and even managed to have a very long conversation about the cheese course with the waiter, get their cheese, and then finish with a soufflé within the same time. It was good to try once but probably not worth going back again.

I dont know about their food, but when my friend and I ate their dessert(the choc chip soufflé among others) we were amazed. Additionally, my friend forgot their ID and went to get it so the soufflé deflated but my bartender who was to generous gave us another freshly made one. Amazing bar service, amazing dessert– could not have asked for more. Definitely coming here many many more times.

Birthday dinner gone so so right. Everything about this places shouts excellence. The décor exudes a modern, dimly lit, wooden warmth. The service is impeccable. From the coat check when you walk in, to the constant yet noninvasive attention from waiters, to the chef himself — you know that they’ve brought in the best of the best. The food was worth the hype. I can’t do justice in words for the flavors, presentation, and thoughtfulness of each dish. Highlights for us were the agnolotti, torchon of mushroom, and stroganoff. They even brought out a little birthday cake ice cream treat for me.

With its white textured walls, dim lighting and beautiful furniture, Kinship has a modern and classy atmosphere worthy of a special night out. Kinship’s menu divides dishes into five categories — «Craft»(requiring extra skill or technique) «History»(classic dishes), «Ingredients»(seasonal dishes), «Indulgence»(treats and desserts) and«For the Table»(dishes to share). Our waitress described the first few dishes in each category to be appetizer portions while the last few in each category are more entrée sized. We ordered several dishes including the Maine lobster french toast, warm smoked sturgeon, hungarian sauerkraut, and the chocolate chip cookie dough soufflé. The Maine lobster french toast was my favorite and is an absolute«must order.» Rich, decadent and flavorful, this dish is a definite«indulgence» that will leave you wanting more. The warm smoked sturgeon was light and different. It actually didn’t taste like fish at all as the the fish tasted much meatier. The sturgeon was paired with an apple and onion fondue which was light and fruity and complemented the fish well. The chocolate chip cookie dough soufflé with the milk ice cream, while pricey for a dessert, was excellent. I loved that they took everyone’s favorite childhood dessert of cookies and milk and turned it into a fancy dessert. I’m not surprised that this place is getting a lot of buzz — Kinship impressed.
