I was in a rush to get to a meeting and I saw this truck didn’t have a line like all the others, so I picked them. I purchased a lamb gyro with the white sauce and hot sauce. A few hours after eating the sandwich I had a the runs bad. Two days later the same thing. The food didn’t smell bad or anything, just made me sick. I should have knew while all the other trucks had lines, this was the only one that didn’t. 7÷18÷12

for $ 7 i got the combo rice platter(chicken chunks, «lamb» chunks over rice and a measely side salad). the food wasn’t half bad, actually, wished they had chickpeas or spinach instead of the side salad of lettuce, onions and two tiny half slices of tomatoes. got both sauces mixed in and it was pretty yummy! but did not appreciate the half an onion on the bottom of the rice that i got mixed in with the salad… oh yeah, cash only.

This is my 3rd return and I am a fan. When I see them on my way to the office parked along Franklin Park, I instantly get a craving for their food. Much, much better than Tasty Kabob in taste and price. Check this out, for $ 6 and no D.C. tax you get a substantial amount of meat either chicken and/or lamb. Customer service is great and you can see them put together your food. The tzatziki cucumber sauce is creamy and refreshing not too watered down, and the hot sauce is flavorful and spicy but not burn a hole in your tongue hot. I take it back to my office and the foil it’s wrapped in and the styrofoam it’s packed in keeps the food nice and warm ready for my consumption. Highly recommended.

It’s not the best truck out there, but the food is decent, the prices are reasonable, there’s rarely a line and they serve you quickly. No unnecessary music, long lines, or attitudes, just a decent lunch.

Their combo gyro sandwiches were a buck less than the other truck’s, but their pitas felt smaller and their fillings less packed. Nevertheless, the pita was warm and soft, the meats were chunky and well-spiced, and they even offered an extra cup of their yogurt sauce for asking. All in all, a good bargain for only $ 6 — especially when compared to the brick-and-mortar $ 5 footlongs advertised just down the block.

Very, very good. I have been dying to try this truck for awhile but never seem to make it or I get distracted by other things. But today, finally, today, I made it. I had the combo pita which had lamb and chicken atop lettuce, onions and a pita bread. I opted to go with both the mild and hot sauces. I loved the hot sauce but it was definitely complimented by the mild. The hot is «hot» but it is not going to blow your head off so if you like things a little spicy, get the hot sauce. It adds a flavor dimension that should not be missed. Both chicken and lamb were perfectly marinated and spiced. The pita is soft and divine but you have to eat fast as it begins immediate destruction upon its arrival in your hands. Nevertheless, it soaked up all the juices from the meat and the sauces. Price is right… for $ 6 you get a fairly substantial amount of chicken and lamb with the veggies and pita. Everyone is friendly and helpful and you can tell that they know their stuff. I really liked this food truck and have been given ample reasons to return again. Much, much better thanTasty Kabob, to my mind, They are not nearly as «decorated» or publicity hungry as some other food trucks but they serve the real deal and at the right price, Highly recommend.

Raising to 5 stars. I’m known to go on food kicks, where I’ll go a month craving burgers, or NY Pizza, Thai food, etc. But the kick will usually die down rather quickly. It’s been almost 3 months and I continue to come to this truck at least once a week. Now there are other wanna-be trucks emerging that are serving gyros, but not are as good. And I’ve noticed a decline in Tasty Kabob’s gyros since my original post. The gyros used to be nearly identical, but now Tasty servers them on a smaller pita. Still good though, they just shrank(price didn’t though).

I usually do a $ 5 foot long at Subway but decided to forego that for a $ 6 pita at the food trucks curiously parked near Navy Yard Metro station. I’m glad we have more options now than before, as food trucks seem to increasingly make their rounds through this area. When the riverfront development, «The Yards» opens up in 2012, my guess is demand for these trucks will die. Until then I’ll continue to give these guys an occasional try. I’d avoid going too late, otherwise you’ll get the over-cooked, dried-to-a-crisp remains of the meat. So although the texture may be different, the taste is still not bad.

This food truck is my favorite. I usually get the combo platter which comes with lamb, chicken, rice, and some lettuce with mild and/or spicy sauce. The meat is tender and wonderful and with the sauce, the flavors are all wonderful. You get a very generous portion – worth the $ 7. The folks who run the truck are very friendly and always quick. I treat myself about once a week and eat it on the grass at Farragut Square Park. The best is that I get back to work not feeling terribly sleepy or queasy. For fast food, it is my favorite.

As a vegetarian its already hard enough to have an option at these food trucks, but this the chef on this truck did hook it up for me. He was very pleasant when I asked him about any vegetarian options. He said he did not have anything for me, and apologized. I asked if he could make me a combo platter and asked«Like what?». I said rice, salad and pita. He said nodded his head and said«Sure, do you want the white sauce with all of that?» I said yes, and he prepared it all for me. We had a disagreement on the amount it would cost so I just gave the cashier $ 5 and said that’s all I wanted to pay for it. They were very positive about it and said«Sure, no problem». The food was decent, my buddy go one of the regular combo package and absolutely raved about it. My veggie combo package was not bad at all, very filling. Salad was fresh, the rice was fresh and flavored properly, love the warm pita, and the white sauce was good. Couple of things I wish for: –Advertise and make a Veggie Platter(this will bring them more customers), hopefully the owners are reading this now and name it after me, since I am the first Unilocaler to give them this idea, plus it seems like today, I was their first vegetarian customer. Call it: Mick’s Veggie Platter –Keep the Veggie Platter prices around $ 4-$ 5 max!

Having chipped a tooth the night before, I was a little terrified at chewing ANYTHING that wasn’t normally soft to begin with, like yogurt or soup, but when lunchtime hits, the tummy is the brains of the operation, and the rest of the body just follows, teeth or no teeth. I had a ravioli Lean Cuisine waiting for me in the freezer back at work, but I felt I needed some meat in my system. Having run all my errands, I found myself at Farragut Square on a Friday — Food Truck Friday! I was going to go for the Capn’Mac, but again, meat. So I wandered back over to the other side of the square where Halal Gyro Plus was, and waited in line. I’m so glad I did! I was afraid the meat was going to be overcooked and tough, but it was SOTENDER. It was like the lamb version of filet mignon, that’s how tender it was! I was so surprised and gobbled it right up. My only criticism is that they really poured on the sauce — far too much for me, as I want to taste the meat. The pita was nice and soft too — for bread and related yummies, I’m kind of a biased reviewer. Let’s put it this way — it tasted fresh, like it had been baked that day. The price, for DC, was fantastic. I think it came to $ 6.50 or so, and if you can get a filling meal for the price in this city, you’ve got a deal! Definitely coming back when the mood hits me for such soft lamb!

These other guys who are giving this truck low stars and bad reviews are completely insane. The meat here is high quality. It’s not fatty or oily. It’s not food coloring people, it’s traditional spices used in this middle eastern food. Seriously. Fantastic flavor! Delicious! The white sauce is cucumber sauce and is great mixed with the hot. The rice is good and the vegetables are crisp. Goes really well together. The lamb and chicken combo platter is where it’s at! My coworkers and I all give it 5 out of 5 and we’ve been to all the trucks. The price for what you get is almost unbeatable too. Nice people and fast service. These guys really do deserve better ratings then what they’ve been getting so far. Give them a try ;)

The Halal Plus truck is a definite gem in the food truck game! It would be a benefit of those curious to look up the«HALAL» term to better understand the process. My review is of the combo platters offered(haven’t tried the Gyro’s yet.) The Lamb and chicken combo comes with rice and general lettuce and tomato salad. the meat is SUPER tender and flavorful. The whole meal is overall satisfying. The addition of the hot sauce, does not overpower the dish but adds a depth of flavor that was enjoyable. I would highly recommend a try of this truck when it hits your area.

Acceptably tasty for $ 6. It’s not the best gyro nor is it all that exciting to look at, but its flavors suit my preference for greasy, salty, and strong flavored foods. Go with the pita options over the rice options. You seem to get the same if not more meat than the rice options. For a dollar more, you’re basically trading in the pita for some rice and extra lettuce.

Gyro is an absolutely perfect street food when made right. Cubes or slices of deliciously seasoned beef, fresh vegetables, salty feta cheese, creamy yogurt sauce and a kick of spice all piled on a soft, easily portable pita. Unfortunately, Halal Gyro Plus’s gyro is only adequate — sloppy, with sub-par pita, fatty meat, the bare minimum of soggy vegetables, and no feta cheese. Not worth it.

Not great… but not bad either. I had the combo chicken and lamb. As noted by others the chicken is a strange orangish/red color… not sure of the rationale for this. The pita is rather bland and flacid but the lamb is flavorful and not too greasy. The white sauce is ok, though not what you would usually expect on a gyro(a bit watery) and the red sauce has a pretty potent kick. The vegatables(onions, lettuce, and tomato) tasted fresh and crisp. Price was pretty fair for the serving. I wish they offered some non-soda options for drinks. I think next time I’ll stick with the naturally colored lamb and pass on the chicken.

The smells are certainly enticing, and the meats(I got a combo of chicken and lamb) are a little bit better than Tasty Kabob, I think. On the other hand, unlike Tasty Kabob, they don’t serve vegetables. On the third hand, though, the Tasty Kabob vegetables aren’t that good, so take your pick. Good hot sauce and tzatziki. I wish it came with more.

you can smell this truck for miles(ok blocks)~ every friday trucks surround Farragut Square during lunch hours while a couple hunnid people gather to enjoy lunch in the park. Came to the halal gyro plus food truck during their soft opening to the public to yanno… check it out~ that’s what we do with every new truck right? rite of passage yo~ soooo a couple co-workers and i did… but when we got to the front of the line they had run out of lamb(we ordered 3 lamb over rice’s) so dude throws on a couple pounds of fresh lamb to sizzle on their big’ol skillet… got even more excited knowing the lamb was cooked super fresh. and for $ 7?! such a steal compared to their fellow food-truck competition. they also have a big’ol cooler filled with a wide selection of pop/soda/water/flavored water. got back to the office(it was a lil chilly outside that day) and savored every– single– last morsel of our lamb over rice’s in the comfort of our conference room with daytime judge show(judge jeanine pirro) yapping in the background. mmmmm MM! lamb was cooked perfectly tender to exact deliciousnessess. white sauce is good(not spicy) and the red sauce is awesome!(real spicy). NO i don’t want cupcakes for lunch NO i don’t want chewy thin slices of pizza NO i don’t want non-deep fried fish tacos either! so thankful to finally have some plain n simple meat and rice lunch available within walking distance to work~ welcome to the dc food truck party, halal gyro plus!

Taking a page from the numerous Halal meat carts that line up and down around the Rosslyn Metro stop, the new Halal Gyro Plus truck offers a very generous lunch portion for just $ 7(or less if you just want the sandwich). Today was their soft launch, and I have to say it went over pretty well, with very expedient service and no lack in quality. Granted, there isn’t a huge amount of variation possible to throw off the assembly line, and not announcing anything over Twitter helped with the crowds I’m sure, but even still it’s always nice to see these trucks get Day 1 done well. Orders are placed in the same basic format all these Halal shops run on, as either a gyro or a «platter» with rice, lettuce, onion and tomato, and with lamb, chicken, or a combination of both. My choice was the combo platter, although I wish I had known they don’t cook the onion, because a big chunk of raw onion has me destroying this gum pack right now. The guy spooning out the meats asked me if I wanted mine spicy, and then again after I said yes and he prepared it asked if I wanted hot sauce on it too, so I’m not sure what the difference was between the two options. Either way I said yes to both queries, and the flavor was just a tad spicy but nothing a normal person couldn’t easily handle. At a Halal cart the meat is obviously supposed to be the star, and this left me with no disappointments. It was both plentiful and tender, and the quality of the meat was very apparent. I didn’t have a single chewy/fatty piece in the whole tray. I would have liked a bit more tomato though, but I guess there’s some kind of shortage going on right now, so perhaps that’s why I got skimped. The one curious thing is that the sign shows a different kind of rice for chicken than the white rice that comes with the lamb, and the combo is supposed to have this other rice, but when I opened up my box I was bummed to see plain white rice. I’m guessing this is just some generic sign that all these guys use, since it also had the 6.99÷5.99 prices, when basically no food truck goes by that pricing schematic. The presentation, delivery, and pricing of Halal Gyro Plus mimic the Yellowvendor truck very closely, with the only real difference being the flavors. Here I think Yellow wins out just slightly, but Halal isn’t too far behind. Their Twitter and Facebook pages aren’t setup at the time of this review, but are supposedly in the works. One final note, they are also a cash only truck, so come prepared.
