Garrett Porter

After years of admiring the positive spirit and music of this local street performer, I finally stopped by today to chat.
His name is Garrett Porter and I truly have a soft spot for him.
For years I’ve passed him on the corner of Connecticut Ave and N Street, smiled and nodded, maybe slipped him a little change here and there. I have never seen him without a grin from ear to ear as he sings, taps his tambourine or shakes his maracas to a soulful beat.
His words and songs are always upbeat and he radiates positivity. Which is actually quite special considering his journey has been one with difficulties.
He told me that I could look him up on the internet.
I had assumed that perhaps someone had wrote about him before, but what I learned existed was much harder to find than I anticipated. The only thing I could find was a small Facebook group dedicated to helping him find his family. It provides a bit more personal information about his life as well.
So if you’re in the neighborhood one afternoon, make sure you drop by and say hello and soak up a little of his spirit. I promise his smile will brighten your day a bit.
