I would have given it 5 stars but I recently went and all the nets were gone — and there was no sign or notice why. I assume they are re-surfacing or something, but it would have been nice to have some notice. Also wish they had wind nets. Other than that, these courts are great! UPDATE: Lowering my review since I’ve tried calling the Banneker Community Center and I haven’t gotten any response to them on how long their tennis courts will be unplayable…

Great courts nicely kept. There are 8 that get busy but the turnover is quick.

Great quality courts(blue color!), eight courts(a lot), that always seem to be open.

After facing a long wait at the tennis courts in Adams Morgan, we drove over to the HU tennis courts and thankfully found a free one. The eight courts pretty much stayed full while we were there but it didn’t seem like anyone had to wait too long to snag one. People of all ages and ability levels were playing. The courts are in great shape and look pretty new. However, the water fountain on the courts does not work and there are no lights so you can’t play after dark. Only one of the courts on the far side got any shade but if you get too hot, the pool is right next door!

With eight newly-revamped courts split into two rows of four contiguous courts, the Howard/Banneker courts are a good place to go if you want to be sure there’s a free court when you get there. The courts are recently re-surfaced and the surface and nets are in min condition. The hitting wall is solid brick and lined, and can be accessed from two sides though both are actual playing courts. Only the two courts adjacent to the hitting the wall have benches. If the sun is out, the courts are baked almost the whole day — there’s hardly any shade. There is plenty of parking on ninth street, and you can probably park in the lot between the courts and the pool(though I don’t know if that’s officially acceptable). There are also no buildings nearby so the courts don’t feel«cozy» at all but you also get a decent breeze through here. All things considered, now that the Howard/Banneker courts have been resurfaced, they are a quality place to hit without dealing with any pretension or elitist attitude.
