It isn’t bad. But it isn’t great, either. And if I’m being charged $ 10 for a sub that is just barbecue beef, then it had damn well better be good.

Here is my honest review based upon only one visit during daylight hours. We did not plan to come here, but the other places we wanted to go to did not have adequate seating. We needed to sit down, rest our feet, and have a meal. First off, we did not feel uncomfortable in the neighborhood. We were warmly welcomed into this establishment. It is not modern at all, kind of a «dive,» but we did not notice a bad smell or trash around. It was not spic-and-span clean, either. There was a server and a cook. We did not see or converse with the cook, we just heard him. The server was a very nice person and he offered menu suggestions. There are only a few places to sit here. Our booth was a little wobbly but fine. The food was all good — no exceptions. Barbeque pork is North Carolina style(vinegar). It does not need the barbeque sauce that comes with, but the sauce was fine. The pepper steak with rice was really tasty. The thin slices of steak were tender and the rice was cooked perfectly. Sides of collard greens, yams, and cole slaw were very good. Fries seemed to be the frozen crinkle cut kind but warm and acceptable. They provided wheat bread as well. Only one other person was patronizing the place at the same time so we wonder how they would handle a larger crowd. Prices were very reasonable for what you get.

Ok, so I ordered a rack of ribs to go. I was horrified when the cook pulled out a rack of already made frozen ribs from the freezer. He tried to thaw them in the microwave. He was very nice so I decided to come back and pick up my order. The place has definitely seen it’s better days. I will say that the ribs were meaty and were edible but maybe go and walk to Mr. P’s a few blocks away.

This place is really missing the market opportunity to either be a great little neighborhood diner or a cool BBQ joint. Right now it’s a run down place that I no longer go to. A long time ago I’d eat some fair to good meals here and used to order the cooked turkey meal for $ 25(roast bird and all the trimmings) at Thanksgiving, but I wouldn’t go near it now. While the staff are friendly, there’s either rubbish or flies or something wrong or some weird sign and you just say to yourself, nah, let’s go somewhere else.

Alright, so my buddy and I go into this place looking for a hole-in-the-wall BBQ joint, you know, the kind that looks like an abandoned café but serves amazing food. Unfortunately, the food here not only matched the eye test, it made me actually go get one… Flies were everywhere, and there was garbage on the table when we sat down. I got the pulled pork and my friend got the ribs. My pork wasn’t amazing, but pretty good, and the comments on here about the sauce are accurate(it was legit). However, the rest of the meal was an obstacle course of gastronomy: his ribs were dry and had probably been cooked the day before, the greens tasted like they had been smoked over a cigarette, the potato salad was so bad my friend spit out his first bite, and the sweet tea had gone bad at least 2 days before(flat sour taste). Worst of all, my friend’s stomach was in knots the entire next day and I got an eye infection that night and woke up with a swollen eye. It was not conjunctivitis, but the doc said it was an infection that could come from bacteria commonly found in, you guessed it, restaurants and kitchens. The cook was a really nice guy and there was only one other person in the entire place. I literally never worry about my health when I eat somewhere — you should see the places I’ve been to and you’d wonder how I’m alive. After a few days of treating this still-swollen eye, I’m wondering the same thing.

This is the flavor of North Carolina BBQ if you’re craving it. Service is really friendly, home style atmosphere.

This place is crawling distance from my apartment. Advertises North Carolina style BBQ but really can’t deliver. The meats are generally okay even if they’re not fresh. The mac and cheese I just had is probably the worst i’ve ever had. Its made with penne, was cold upon first touch and taste like it was made a month ago. Atrocious. Service is friendly and the meat is good. Definitely wouldn’t go out of my way

I live down the street and want to try this place, but the last time I walked in I was knocked back by a STRONG urine smell(not from people, it smelled like mouse/rat droppings). There was also a lot of junk stacked up inside the restaurant. I’m from the South and love soul food, but I’m not going to eat it in a restaurant that doesn’t look or smell clean.

Tried this place yesterday. Since it’s kind of a hole in the wall I was hoping the food would be bangin. We walked in and looked at the menu and while deciding, the owner gave us some grilled chicken and mac and cheese to try out. The BBQ sauce was on point so I got a chicken sandwich. I went with the mashed potatoes. A sandwich is $ 5 and a side is $ 2. Can’t beat that. The sandwich didn’t have much bbq sauce in it so that was disappointing. My friend got a roast beef and he said the same thing. Mashed potatoes weren’t that great either. I’m from the south and I wanted some authentic comfort food but I didn’t find it here. Service was incredibly friendly and it’s been around forever. I’d come back but next time ask to put more sauce on the sandwich.

Can’t say that I’ve tried the BBQ but I got the sauce and it’s pretty good. The salisbury steak is actually tasty and I remember liking the fried chicken and really liking the mac n cheese. Owner and or staff are very friendly and feels like a place that was probably around decades ago. Good price for quality and quantity. Go Vols!

Great North Carolina style barbecue. Everyone in there is incredibly friendly, and, if you’re not worried about your health but worried about your happiness, go there. The Mac and Cheese is out of this world, the fried chicken is great, and the portions are incredible. Order one of the dinners(a meat and two sides for nine bucks) and you’ve got enough food for a full day. As a native Jerseyan, I may not be a BBQ connoisseur, but it sure is good.
