This place is run by volunteers and ALL profits are donated to Depression & Bi Polar support groups for NW Oregon Coast &SW Washington Coast people. The little lady running the store said she turns 80 in two years and what politician will push around a little 80 year old woman?! She’s a spitfire dedicated to her cause! This store has a LOT of inventory, be patient and dig. We walked away with several books and blue ray DVDs all for a buck a piece. Can’t beat that deal. PLUS the proceeds go to a fantastic cause. You can’t beat this store!

I’m a visiting therapist from Tri-Cities WA en route to Naselle Youth Camp in the morning. I searched for thrift stores on Unilocal and found this one. The lady, Pat, was an absolute delight! We chatted about our work and traded business cards. Found two delightful books and the prices were fantastic.

The staff is all-volunteer, led by Pat, the sweetest older British lady. She is a real delight! This is not Goodwill! The shop is a jumbly assortment, but the prices are great. Ladies and children’s clothes are accessed by a separate entrance. Be sure to ask Pat for assistance.

Today I finally went into Penny-Wise Thrift Store. All of my neighbors have been encouraging me to check it out and I needed a few things for my apartment as I just moved. When I first went in, they said hello to me, but I could tell they were having a meeting for the business. I asked if they had lamps and they kindly pointed me in the right area. This store isn’t as organized as Goodwill, but it makes up for that in so many ways. The people that work along with the owner Pat, are volunteers. They know were absolutely everything is and can tell you if they have it or will get it soon. When you walk into most second-hand stores, they quite honestly smell disgusting! At the Penny-Wise, it smelt a little dusty, but otherwise lacked that smell of dirty clothes. The prices are not on the items, but because they vary. They are very accommodating to people who have less money. There are many lower income and disabled/elderly housing units near the store and those with less means/fixed incomes are very grateful for the ‘sliding’ scale that’s available. I found a lamp that I needed to brighten up my place… however, it was far too heavy for me to lift off of the shelf and to the cash register. All I had to do was mention this and someone popped up and moved it for me. He also brought it out to my car without me having to ask(that doesn’t happen at Goodwill). I also found a shelving unit that I would love to get. I asked the price and it was more money than I had available. She handed me a sold sign and offered layaway options or my word that I would pay the agreed upon price in the near future. They will deliver the piece to my place free of charge! I won’t say this place is for everyone, because it just isn’t. If you don’t mind a rummage sale or to dig a little to find something, then you will get along just fine. If you are a power shopper who knows what you want and need to be able to get in and out quickly… I would recommend North Coast Community Thrift Store.

This store is what helps fund the facilitation of the local Bi-Polar /Depression Support group. It is run by a wonderful lady with a heart of gold and a no nonsense attitude. Her plate is always full when it comes to projects to assist those in need. As a thrift store, I have known people to find really good deals now and then. We have found a few things that we actually needed, but are in a stage of life where we are thinning down a bit, so we donate more than we purchase. Every bit helps no matter what. This is a huge place and one really needs to dig to find the treasures. A lot of mixed goods that range from a «heart beat away from the skip» to decent antique goods. They also have a building next door dedicated to clothing(mens, womens, children) where they have a «fill a bag» for a fixed price deal normally. This is a safe spot for many with issues to go and get some good old fashioned talk therapy and peer support as well. There is normally more going on than meets the eye of the casual observer. Ask Pat(wonderful British lady) about the community meetings they hold for Bi-Polar /Depression support. In a region filled with quite a few charity shops, I like to support those that provide the most support to the community. Penny-wise is in the upper region of my list. Cash only to the best of my knowledge. Clean out your closet and donate before coming in to shop, you will feel better.

As part of our normal routine when in various towns, etc., we like to check out the local color and various shops. One shop that intrigued me was the Penny-Wise Thrift Store. I mentioned to the YS that I would like to stop there and check it out. He was game and so we did. This place is worse than your grandmother’s basement. It has a lot of stuff and it’s somewhat organized by categories but they could do well to pare it down a bit. It is a lot of stuff that Goodwill wouldn’t take for obvious reasons(because it wouldn’t sell). I know what they are trying to do and I appreciate the whole reuse mentality but this place is messy and I didn’t see a price on anything not that I found anything I wanted to buy. The workers or volunteers not sure because they were all seated up front and didn’t look up when we entered and never spoke to us were busy talking among themselves and cooking possibly based on the smell in the business. There were various signs throughout the business stating we were on camera while I couldn’t see any evidence of that, I also, again could feature anything in there worth stealing. All in all an odd little place that has promise but needs a reboot. Perhaps Disney could assist after they are done with Star Wars.
